Acquiring clinic account of my own - anon

Posted: Aug 09, 2010

I just wanted to know if someone could tell me how to get an account of my own, (preferably clinic, something small). I have worked for large companies but now would like to check into getting an account of my own. Can someone please explain to me how to do this as I would appreciate it very much. Hope to hear from you soon!

I certainly wouldn't do this. With the exception of some large clinics with multispecialty (who outsource to the big agencies anyway), clinics just use their electronics to enter the information. My own doctor (my gyn as well) doesn't use transcriptionists. The doctor just punches information into the computer while he's doing my exam.

However, if you decide to try this, you could "cold call" and ask if they need a transcriptionist. If they do, you could offer to do some work for free, and this could serve as your "test."

Good luck.

Hey there..just saw your post. You can DEFINITELY do it yourself. I would suggest two things - MPWord (medpen) to handle all of your transcription automation and Unlimited Dictation (for 99 bucks a month you can have up to 100 doctors dial in dictation! - no phone lines, no dictation equipment and no minute charges) Both of these combined would have you set up on a great budget! Once you have that in place, go hit the pavement, stop by offices, drop off flyers, off to do a week free etc..YOU CAN DO IT! Good luck!

I wouldn't purchase anything until you have the jobs. If you get jobs, you'll have time to purchase what you need. That other post almost sounds like a sales pitch!

is that they are all free until you want to use and pay for them. Or have some sort of free trial, no credit card required for sign up options. your post almost sounds like a "maybe she should just go out back and shoot herself because it can't be done" pitch.
one of my favorite quotes for you both; "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're usually correct!" Henry Ford
Lets go ahead and brighten up in here folks!!

The poster is the one who asked how one would go about it. I was just making sure she/he knew that she may not find a clinic doctor who uses transcriptionists.(I can name 3 local offices off the top of my head in my area who do not.) I went on to tell her how to go about it if she finds one. Trying to be realistic and helpful at the same time.

Great advice! Thanks for the info. - MTPockets

Appreciate the info about MPWord - that sounds like a dream come true to ICs. Thanks for the tip.

I sent out an introductory letter, describing the services I could provide, the advantage of dealing with a local company, etc, and included a stamped, preprinted postcard for them to rtn to me indicating if they were interested or not. No cold calls. Once I started receiving cards back I called and made appointments with them. I actually got back 42% of my return cards. The interview with them is crucial. Listen to how they talk. They think they are interviewing you, but you are really deciding if you want to type for this guy or not. If he is a total mushmouth, blow him off. Tell him your business filled up faster than you ever expected, but if you get an opening for another client he will be the first one you call. If he speaks clearly, sign him up before someone else does. I bought a Lanier "carousel" type of recorder that held eight hours of tapes and connected it to a phone line. They probably have digital ones by now. And check out your responsibility as a contractor under the HIPAA regulations. If you are good, word of mouth will spread fast. In less than three months I had eight local clients. That was enough to continue to provide 24-hour turn-around and still have a little play time and make a living wage.

I'm a bit curious. So, you were a company, not an entity correct? I think if poster decides to become a company, he or she might have better luck. I based my answer on assuming just an individual independent.

Not sure how long ago this was you were able to do this. I'm assuming it was a while back, based on your note....

In any event, if individual MTs getting their own accounts is coming back, I'm certainly wanting to be the first to know! I've had it with the big companies.

Yes, it was a long time ago. I am not sure of the legal difference between a company and an entity. I considered myself an independent contractor, and that is how my accountant showed me on my IRS returns. I sold my business in 1990 when my reserve unit got orders for the first "gulf war." After that I went back to VA to finish up the few years I needed to draw returement. By that time, HIPAA had kicked in with all its rules about contractors, etc. I was not sure I wanted to be working in condiitons where the government would be looking down my throat and up my you-know-what. If you, or anyone else out there, can enlighten me on that I would be very grateful. I would love to get back into independent contracting. It really is a "cherry-pickers" dream.

or office manager. They are the people who are responsible for hiring outside contractors, so go to them with your proposition. That's how I got started.

Good luck!

What Is The Best Way To Go After Your Own Little Clinic Account?
Nov 13, 2010

My company just lost a huge account.  Since then I have not made much money at all.  I am scraping to get by.  After 10 years in the medical transcription field I am fed up.  I have always worked on such great accounts for good money.  Now, I cannot find something that is even average pay.  I am going to be taking a medical coding course; however, I still need to provide for my three kids.  I want to go out and solicit doctors and try to secure my own account, ...

Setting Up Clinic Account
Jun 07, 2011

I did transcription for a physician about 15 years ago (drove 20 miles to his office, picked up tapes and returned finished product 2-3 times a week).  He is unhappy with his current transcription service and wants me to do it again.  He uses a digital recorder now and I am not sure how to set things up so I can do it online or through email.  I would greatly appreciate any direction or advice in this area.  ...

I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed over and over - I'm just starting to research it a bit.  (I haven't completely been under a rock but I have been in my own happy little world with my job ... until now).  I'm an IC transcriptionist (working from home) for a local clinic of 15 MDs/PAs.   Three of them are using Dragon Speak  VR  with EHR.  A fourth one just started.  What I want to know is if there is a place for me when m ...

In-house Clinic Pay
Nov 16, 2010

I have an interview with a local eye clinic (there are six surgeons).  Just wondering what kind of salary to expect to be offered or ask for (!), having been paid as a remote MT/VR Editor by production for many years and haven't a clue about salaries in clinics any more.  It is not as an IC but as member of their staff, permanent, full-time, 40 hours a week. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA.   ...

Nuance Took Over My Clinic

I just found out today when I had no work with my smaller company that Nuance took over all the work starting today.  I found out they knew about it 2 months ago and didn't tell us.  I am waiting on the contact information from the original clinic manager at the doctor's office so hopefully we can go with our work.  Has anyone else had this happen and if so how good are the chances of just going with Nuance.  At this point I just need the work.    Thank ...

Been Doing Clinic My Whole MT Career...
Jul 05, 2013

I've been doing clinic my whole six-year MT career. Now since there are not that many clinic transcription jobs anymore, I'd like to learn acute. But of course, all the acute ads say they want experience. I'm confident that I can pass some of the acute care job tests. Are some employers open to giving you an acute care job if you do well on the test, having no actual job experience in it? I went to a good school and am confident in my abilities. What has been your experience in th ...

No idea who that ad on the Job Seekers board is from (Tracy in Lousiana, but no company name). Clinic Notes = No Money?

Has anyone started to get more work in the last year (in a clinic setting)? Clinic Work On Holidays? Seriously?

Over the past few days, along with my usual snot and threat-o-grams, I have been getting emails telling me that I have to work the holidays.  I do NO hospital work--just clinic work and 99% of what those doctors do is elective stuff.   Of course, there is no valid reason for this.  The only "reason" my supervisor is sending out this hate mail is because she wants her bonus for meeting Nuance's totally unreasonable TAT.   Unbelievable.  Obscene.  Can't wa ...
