After 30 years finally decided to embrace VR - need input
Posted: Feb 11, 2014
This is a part-time 4 hour position, been at it for a month, and cannot get above 600 lines. I am editing on the Ex-Editor platform and I love it. Care to share any pointers, or things I can do to be more productive. I am definitely not using the mouse but still cannot get above 600 lines in 4 hours. I do have a full-time straight transcription position, and thought I would gradually ease into VR to build speed for what I will probably inevitably be doing.
It's a joke - Old and Tired MT

I don't know how the companies sold everybody a bill of goods that you can do twice as much as straight typing. It's a joke, but yet they expect you to.
That's the truth! I interviewed for Acusis sm - justme

and was asked how many lines I could do. I told them 200 to 230 lph straight trascription and 180 VR. She asked, you do less for VR? I said yes because I can type them faster. I think I surprised her on that one! It is a joke for sure!
I remember when Acusis went to VR, and yes, they - had promised us we would be - sm

doing at least twice what we'd done with straight transcription. What a friggin joke that turned out to be. My LPH were about the same as yours, and that was on a good day. I think now the minimum for VR is up somewhere around 250 LPH, or so. VR for that company is a waste of time and money, because it's not one-on-one. Instead, multiple doctors share each transcription station, and multiple MTs share the accounts, and the so-called "learning" process of the VR is all tied together. As soon as it "learns" something from one MT, it UN-learns it as soon as the next MT logs into that account. I could pen the dictation in flowery Gothic script with a crowquill pen and India ink, a whole lot faster than it can be done with their lame VR system.
VR will never "learn" - Karmalicious

The VR doesn't learn because it is preprogrammed based on algorithms that the speech wreck companies have developed. MTSOs blatantly lie to us when they tell us we train this BS. All we do is provide a prototype which Nuance and M Modal utilize to guess at what may possibly be dictated and place it in their speech engines. They do this without adherence to the multitude of account specifics out there and just basically abuse the MTs who are presented with this junk. We all spend more time formatting and making continuous corrections and deletions of material that we would have never transcribed in the first place, and we would format as we went along. The MTSOs embraced this technology to get rid of higher-producing MTs. This was despite the fact that M Modal itself warning them that this was a bad idea and now they are trying to deal with the costs of constantly upgrading the systems. The costs are substantial so they do not pursue Nuance or M Modal to make changes to drafts--they just keep lying to us about training the system with consistency. Thus, they will consistently see good people leave this field and others never enter it.
maybe a suggestion - StillAnMT

I've not done VR, just straight typing. But my thinking is to make macros to do things like "delete to end of this sentence," "insert line," "delete line," "capitalize the first word of this sentence and then put my cursor back where it was," or whatever you run into a lot in the middle of a report.. Hope that gets you thinking. Again, I am just wondering what doing VR would be like, so I might be way off base here...
You are...VR sucks! - anon

No disrespect at all, but if you've never done VR then you have no idea how bad it is. Your post is great in theory, but it wouldn't work. I have so many shortcuts but every time there's a software "upgrade" none of them work and I have to re-enter them but yet I can't use the same shortcut initials because it already exists. What? Alot of VR is also ctrl, alt, shift, function keys, depending on the software. Even on a good day I can't get over 150 LPH. I absolutely HATE VR, SR, whatever it's called. I'm 10 times faster straight typing, but why do all that work for half pay? I'm so done with MT. But if you could make your suggestions work then maybe you could hopefully make really good $$$ at VR. Good luck!

ExText already assigned all the home keys to commands so you only have awkward keys to assign to macros. It's a shame they did that because their commands are rarely used, i.e. change work type, etc. We had to use Word 2003 which is limited in the keyboard commands that can be reassigned. I used IT to create macros such as the one to format numbering, which takes going through 4 or 5 windows to tell it to number and shortened that one to home keys hit twice, i.e. "jj". Also has one delete word to left. I did IT short forms for names of facilities because VR could never figure out which words to capitalize and it was faster just to delete the redo the whole name.
Basically editing programs are NOT designed for editors because the developers are not getting any money from us, only from the doctors and facilities, so they only need to please them with their software design. I used to use 4000 short forms for transcribing, but rarely did I use them in editing. Not only have we taken a huge drop in pay, but we have also lost another 25% in productivity by not being able to use expansion programs as we did before and that productivity gain was our only raise in decades.
okay - so I was way off base - StillAnMT

Thanks for the informative and kind reply. So working with VR means one is in the EHR screen itself and so is dependent on that program for whatever shortcut steps are available.. yes, you are so right that the only raise I have gotten is what I have created myself by macros and the Shorthand program used to the nth degree...
It would be nice if VR could do that, but it can't. - In the case of the place I worked, - Msg

macros made the VR work even worse, because it had lots of invisible commands in there that you can't see, even if you hit the ¶ key. Also, depending on who you work for, some companies don't pay for macros. Mind didn't, so I found it was better to just type everything I was editing, rather than try to use my macros. Such a shame, too - because I originally had a huge library of macros that made me super fast when I was straight typing. Using VR was like trying to do the work with my feet.

I Decided To Change My Tact A Couple Of Years Ago. Aug 26, 2010I began to realize that my victim mindset was the reason I was being treated so badly professionally and socially. Even when I had a good job and good friends, I ended up sabotaging them.
After wising up a little bit in the School of Hard Knocks, I decided to try something different. I was going to work on my relationships both professionally and personally to see if I could get better results and resist the opportunity to strike back, quit my job, tell people off, and otherwise behave li ...
After 42 Years, I'm Finally... Sep 25, 2014I just finished my last keystroke. Ever. After 42 years in the medical transcription industry, I have retired. I will never again plug earphones in my ears and listen to mush mouths and doctors who can't speak English. I started in this field using an electric typewriter and cassette recorder - even Dictaphone belts at one point. Before there were computers. It's been a long, long rollercoaster ride with lots of ups and downs. I've worked for doctors' offices, hospitals ...
I Left MT Finally After 10 Years Nov 11, 2013I struggled with leaving, I put so much into this and granted I got to stay home with my kids when they were small, but the worry about steady money was the price we paid. We filed for bankruptcy and almost lost our house. Thankfully, we got a loan mod which reduced our mtg down from 1700 to 1400. I finally applied on Craigslist to part-time law firm positions and got one for 3 days a week next town over making $15 an hour. I bring home after taxes $300 a week and have 4 days to spend on my ...
After 10 Years Of MT, Finally Working Outside Of Home Again Sep 27, 2013Got an office job 3 days a week making $15 hour, still will do Mt prn, but won't have to stress anymore about my lines. I am glad I got to stay home with my kids over those years, but if I had to do it again, I would of stayed working. The financial stress that me and my family went through, bankruptcy, never having money to do anything fun, no vacations. I don't think it was worth it. Oh well, they tried to tell us in MT school back in 2001 there was talk of VR then, now its EMR a ...
After 4 Years, ASR Finally Got "cabbage" Right. May 12, 2011I have changed it at least half a million times to CABG, but it never "learns." I even have it in autocorrect so I just add the space to the end of "cabbage," and it changes it to CABG; however, I had a report where the patient had been eating cabbage. ASR finally got it right. Way to go ASR. One time out of 500,000. Woo-hoo. ...
We Seem Not To Have Embrace The New Titles Oct 26, 2013We are still MTs and MMEs at least here. I notice management is using the new titles, but personally, I can't even remember what they are. I think they should have just left those alone. Frankly I'm not even that crazy about MME because no one else in the industry recognizes it. ...
Used To Embrace Technology - No Problem. Dec 30, 2010Now the Q is being so underhanded, I am scared to death I am not going to be able to figure out how to find my pay stub on the new system. Probably just my low self-worth talking now. Is MQ still going to figure lines and gross pay? How will we ever know if any of it is right (like we have a clue now)? ...
After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm Nov 26, 2012Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore.
The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words: Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc. I felt relieved to finally have a "job."
What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...
3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor? Dec 20, 2013There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...
Getting Ouf Of MT, But Cannot Decided Which Way To Go... Sep 29, 2010I have made up my mind that I am getting out of MTing. I am looking into coding through an online program, or getting my bachelors degree (also completely online). I don't know which way would be more profitable/secure in the long run. Coding, or getting my bachelors degree (my interests are computer science, psychology, or health information management, wide variety I know). What do you think? ...

How Pay Should Be Decided Nov 18, 2012Here is how I think pay should be decided...
1. You are new you get 4 CPL until you prove yourself...quality, production, etc., then in 6 months you are evaluated and a raise could be granted, 3% of course.
2. Everyone should be evaluated on job performance once a year and if you are a good employee a raise should be granted.
3. I believe any employee who has been with the company for 5-10 years and tier 3 you should automatically be paid 6 CPL. Let ...
I Have Decided I'm Fed Up With MT, And Getting Out. Sep 10, 2013I have a good job for now but am so fed up with people who can't speak English properly, the stuttering, slurring, mumbling, whispering, and so on, not to mention coroprate bullcrap.
I thought I could hang in there to retire, but I'm finally fed up. Finally figured out something else I can do, a couple things. I won't have one egg dependent on one basket, and will be much happier in the long run. Plus no more office crap, which I despise.

What I Have Decided....sm Nov 30, 2014I have decided if this plan does turn out bad I will just sit back and work as usual. I make close to minimum wage now as it is. If I end up making only MW it wont make much of a difference. With that being said, I'll just work everyday and not push my self super hard to meet line requirements (it seems they are getting rid of them) and I wont work my tail off trying to meet all these requirements. I will work and do the best I can without stressing out all the while keeping my eyes op ...
I Think I Have About Decided On Scribe Jul 19, 2012I'd like to go into coding, and I think I'd be really good at it too, but medical scribe looks like the direction to go that would require the least amount of training. I think as soon as the summer is over and I've taken my vacation and used up some PTO, I will apply for that. Wish me luck. ...
I Have Decided To Quit.... Dec 23, 2012This was not an easy decision. I will be able to devote every day after Jan. 1st to find a job. At this point, all I have to do is find something that pays minimum wage, isn't that sad! But, something with a future and a company that gives raises, no matter how small and good insurance and time off. This company will lose a very good MT who has had it. I have tried to communicate on these boards my support of MModal. It gave me hope. I have none now ...
I Have Decided VR Is Just Dangerous! Jul 31, 2013Really, with this time of VR, who can actually be accountable for the errors in reports? My VR is HORRID. It will completely change the name of medications that the dictator dictates and on and on. So, when a medical error is made, based on a report where the MT didn't catch a mistake on VR, how can they hold the MT solely responsible? I mean, we didn't TYPE that error, we just missed a word while proofreading. I wonder why they would allow something with ...
So While I'm OOW, I Decided To Job Hunt. Sm Jan 21, 2015I found several MT companies. When I clicked on "Heartland Info Services" - guess who popped up? NUANCE. WTH? Uh, no thanks. Trying to leave this place. Pretty shaddy of them to use a different name. ...

Has Anyone Decided To Leave MT For Good Because Oct 09, 2010of no work, unable to find a new MT job, or simply sick and tired of it? What did you decide to do? I feel like I'm a bit too old to return to school (not to mention I couldn't afford to do it anyway)......... I'm afraid eventually (prob sooner rather than later) there will be no need for MTs anymore, either because they off-shored it all or hospitals go with systems like EPIC. Does anyone have any advice for an ex MT on what type of job they could quality ...
I've Decided To Apply At M Modal... Apr 26, 2012I believe M Modal is the only place hiring part time that will allow satellite. I'm tired of hearing, "No, satellite is not compatible." Sooo....

One good thing about M Modal is I don't think there is any worry of them being bought out by anyone... ...

I Worked For M*Modal A Couple Of Years Ago Or So And I Worked For Medquist Several Years Ago. Today I've Decided On A Personal Protest Step To Help Myself. May 01, 2012My company has always invited us to create and store template dictations for common use by everyone. I've made many and been happy to share, and since they're good quality they're used by many, even some dictators to set up their own formal templates. It's always pleased me to be a team player, but, let's face it, this is only one more thing that allows my company to hire less skilled people and lower the line rates it pays me.

I've Decided I'm Not Going To Even Open The Boost Stat Emails Jun 26, 2012anymore. What a morale killer, and they just tick me off. I Finally Get It.... Mar 02, 2010After receiving the infamous "no jobs available" for the upteen time today, it finally hit me. What an amazing way to get rid of MTs without really having to get rid of them on your own. Drive the MTs insane with no work, yet keep them locked to their computers in the hope that a job might become available. It feels kinda like playing the lottery....you know it's a waste of money and time, but just maybe you might win...ughh. Why is it that our "professional" jo ...
