I left MT finally after 10 years - NewEnglander

Posted: Nov 11, 2013

I struggled with leaving, I put so much into this and granted I got to stay home with my kids when they were small, but the worry about steady money was the price we paid. We filed for bankruptcy and almost lost our house. Thankfully, we got a loan mod which reduced our mtg down from 1700 to 1400. I finally applied on Craigslist to part-time law firm positions and got one for 3 days a week next town over making $15 an hour. I bring home after taxes $300 a week and have 4 days to spend on my house and family. I wish I had done it sooner, but was afraid no one would give me a chance again. I have legal experience but its not recent. Luckily I had it to fall back on. My days fly by at work between answering phones and getting work out. Its great, can be stressful, but you feel good after you leave a hard day, not like transcribing, which can be very boring. I am 46 and have children 10 and 12, who can stay home for an hour on their own til I get home. Its working great, but tomorrow we are getting a lot of snow! This is the part I remember I hated driving to work in it. Wish me luck :)

Congrats! Not looking forward to the snow! - FellowNewEnglander. nm

That's awesome for you! Every couple of years I take an office job.. out of necessity when my transcription work is slow. What I really like about it is how much I truly appreciate coming home at the end of the day ..and there actually IS and end of the day..and I actually look forward to the weekends!

GOOD LUCK!! :)

Way to go both of you! - clb

In a "perfect" world, I wish I could work outside the home spring, summer, and fall and then stay at home doing MT during the winter. I wonder if my job would let me cut down to PT come April.

Ah to dream.

Congrats on getting out! :-)

Congrats - I got out, too

I finally got out of MT after 13 years. I now live in Southwest FL, so the snow part wasn't a factor, but I don't ever, ever forget those snowy commutes when we lived up north.

After 42 Years, I'm Finally...
Sep 25, 2014

I just finished my last keystroke. Ever. After 42 years in the medical transcription industry, I have retired. I will never again plug earphones in my ears and listen to mush mouths and doctors who can't speak English. I started in this field using an electric typewriter and cassette recorder - even Dictaphone belts at one point.  Before there were computers. It's been a long, long rollercoaster ride with lots of ups and downs. I've worked for doctors' offices, hospitals ...

After 10 Years Of MT, Finally Working Outside Of Home Again
Sep 27, 2013

Got an office job 3 days a week making $15 hour, still will do Mt prn, but won't have to stress anymore about my lines. I am glad I got to stay home with my kids over those years, but if I had to do it again, I would of stayed working. The financial stress that me and my family went through, bankruptcy, never having money to do anything fun, no vacations. I don't think it was worth it. Oh well, they tried to tell us in MT school back in 2001 there was talk of VR then, now its EMR a ...

After 30 Years Finally Decided To Embrace VR
Feb 11, 2014

This is a part-time 4 hour position, been at it for a month, and cannot get above 600 lines. I am editing on the Ex-Editor platform and I love it. Care to share any pointers, or things I can do to be more productive. I am definitely not using the mouse but still cannot get above 600 lines in 4 hours. I do have a full-time straight transcription position, and thought I would gradually ease into VR to build speed for what I will probably inevitably be doing. ...

I Left 3 Years Ago
Jan 11, 2012

I lost my last account to India 3 years ago and decided it just wasn't worth it any longer after 20 years of all this crap. I have only returned to this board today after 3 years and the complaints are all just the same as they were 3 years ago - some of the same companies (they will never change), some new companies that are probably old companies that changed their name because they could no longer get people to apply for their positions. For all of you who complain and do not do anythi ...

I Left The Q 2 1/2 Years Ago
Oct 02, 2014

I still visit this board once in a while out of curiosity with no intentions of returning to the Q to see if it seems like the same crappy company I left and if any Americans are still employed by them.  There's your answer, Anon (HMMMMM) ...

My Heart Goes Out To You All-left MQ 4 Years Ago After
Apr 04, 2013

18 years and have NEVER looked back when they got bought out by CBay-that was it for me.  I knew then that nothing good would come of working for an Indian-owned company.  I even turned down an admin job when my company was bought out by MQ-no way would I work for that disgusting establishment, so went on UE for a few months and didn't care!  Now I love my job and am treated like a real person!  It is greener elsewhere and you will be okay.  I know it is scary, but ...

I Left MQ 6 Weeks Ago. After 9 Years, I Was Terrified
Apr 01, 2010

to start somewhere new.  I tried 3 other companies in the past, part time while continue to work at MQ, and left each one because the software was so much better at MQ.  Finally, I got sick of the crap and threats and new accounts, and I left.  The day I left I was dancing around my house all day long, so relieved to be rid of them.  Now, I make less than my base at MQ, but I have no ASR, so it's actually more.  The software is not as good, but that is a minor ...

So I Left Transcription Two Years Ago. Got Laid Off From
May 20, 2014

a hospital job after being a model employee for 5 years because of outsourcing.  Disillusioned, I decided I was done and took a job as a unit secretary at a hospital "in the city."  Pay was the same and I thought it would be a nice change, you know a little daily human interaction.  WRONG!  After dealing with nonstop ringing phones, call lights, pesky patients and family, hateful nurses, and condescending doctors on a daily basis, I was ready to run back to my home office for ...

After 4 Years, ASR Finally Got "cabbage" Right.
May 12, 2011

I have changed it at least half a million times to CABG, but it never "learns." I even have it in autocorrect so I just add the space to the end of "cabbage," and it changes it to CABG; however, I had a report where the patient had been eating cabbage.  ASR finally got it right.  Way to go ASR.  One time out of 500,000.  Woo-hoo.  ...

After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm
Nov 26, 2012

Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore. The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words:  Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc.  I felt relieved to finally have a "job." What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...

3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor?
Dec 20, 2013

There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...

I Worked For M*Modal A Couple Of Years Ago Or So And I Worked For Medquist Several Years Ago.
Aug 08, 2014

Lately, I've been getting legal notices mailed to my home from I believe the east coast somewhere informing me of a class action lawsuit against M*Modal and inviting me to joint if I have a claim.  I don't think I have a claim, but then again with all the shady practices in this business, I'm not so sure.  I'm just curious what the heck is going on. Anyone care to give me the lowdown? ...

I Finally Get It....
Mar 02, 2010

After receiving the infamous "no jobs available" for the upteen time today, it finally hit me.  What an amazing way to get rid of MTs without really having to get rid of them on your own.  Drive the MTs insane with no work, yet keep them locked to their computers in the hope that a job might become available.  It feels kinda like playing the lottery....you know it's a waste of money and time, but just maybe you might win...ughh.  Why is it that our "professional" jo ...

Now I Finally Believe The End Is Near
Jun 06, 2011

I must admit I've been reading this board for years, never posted until now, partly due to the probably unsubstantiated paranoia going around awhile back that those who posted here got the ax first, silly I suppose, but I used to care about keeping this job and didn't want to take any chances.  Now, finally, I understand that I am fighting a losing battle, and I know longer give ******.  I've been reading about you guys with NJA for days on end, etc., etc., and I guess I ...

I Did It.....finally! Sm
Jul 05, 2011

I finally told MQ goodbye!  I finally got another contract job and they needed me to start pretty much immediately, so I quit without notice.  In a way I feel bad for resigning without a 2-week notice, but I figure MQ would not give me a 2-week notice if they were letting me go.  I wish all my MQ co-workers well and I hope you find happiness either with MQ or elsewhere.  God bless you all! ...

Finally!!
Jun 15, 2012

Never thought this day would get here, but I'm finally gone!! I feel such peace just to know that I won't have to stress anymore about everthing this industry has become: Horrible dictators, low pay, off-shoring, and VR. Bless everyone who is sticking it out until the very end. ...

I'm Finally Out!
Dec 01, 2012

Finally out.  I start a new job in-house on December 10 in a medical office.  Not MT, just answering some phones and setting up appointments.   And I get to wear scrubs.  I guess in the morning I'll be taking off one pair of pajamas and putting on another.  Don't lose hope friends.... ...

Well I Finally Did It!
Jan 23, 2013

I finally went ahead and filed for partial U/E.  I know I'm not in as bad of a situation as many I read on this board but I just can't live like this anymore.  It's bad enough that our pay has been to sharply cut with VR but now when they don't give us any work to do it's worse.  It humiliated me at my age to have to do this for the first time in my life at 59 years of age but I did it.  ...

Feb 11, 2013

Finally Got Out Of MT
Jan 01, 2014

I just wanted really to say for those of you still hanging on, worried about work in the outside world, I finally got out about 3 months ago and I haven't been this happy in YEARS and to be exact in the last 12 years that I was an MT.  Working as an MT, I don't think I ever felt good enough, because I would be torn apart due to missing a comma or not being able to understand a term well enough to find it.  I was so stressed about money all of the time and even dreaded holiday ...

FINALLY!!!! A Job
Oct 10, 2014

I have been watching the boards for so many months. I was laid off almost a year ago and sent "oodles" upon "oodles" of resumes to every company I saw on this board, the other board, the job servers...You name it, I sent it.  I even did Craig's list. Some were kind enough to respond, some did not bother.  But I still plugged away.  My unemployment ran out in July and thank God we have been making do.  I answered an ad on Craig's list for something out of t ...
