I have decided to quit.... - done

Posted: Dec 23, 2012

This was not an easy decision.  I will be able to devote every day after Jan. 1st to find a job.  At this point, all I have to do is find something that pays minimum wage, isn't that sad!  But, something with a future and a company that gives raises, no matter how small and good insurance and time off.  This company will lose a very good MT who has had it.  I have tried to communicate on these boards my support of MModal.  It gave me hope.  I have none now since my paycheck will be 4 to 500 dollars for two weeks.  I do believe you can make more working just about anywhere.  Good luck to all of you.  I wish you the best and hope you too find something better if you are looking.

I would too - and I mean that sincerely

I have often said that if I was only making minimum wage on this job, there would be absolutely nothing keeping me here. Good luck! I hope you find something you love.

Good luck,,Things will work out - NM

Decided to Quit! - Me Too!

I did exactly what you did, BUT, I found a job first; it took me eight months!! With that said, don't quit and look for a job, look for a job, get one and then just turn off your computer and be done with MM. My only regret, was that I contacted my CCM about quiting and I never heard one word back from her. I just wish I would have stop working. You and so many others are going to be looking after the first of the year. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face, find a job first and then tell them they can stick it! Good luck.

Very true, I never quit until I find something else - sm

I was just barely able to...it was a terrifying nightmare...but, the state I was in, I don't know how I would have been able to job hunt, focus, interview - AND handle the horrible exploitative MT job as well. I mean, it depends on how run down you are, etc. I was run down.

I have another job - more hours, still part-time; pay is only slightly better than crummy VR pay - but it is a low-stress job working with toddlers. For example, cutting out Santa hats from red paper; slicing up a banana with a plastic knife; singing Christmas songs.

I still get depressed in the morning before work, just not as bad or as long-lasting. I have a really hard time clothes-wise, getting dressed, makeup...still financially precarious, just not as bad as with being an MT.

I started doing this thing called FlyLady, to help out with those "self-care" kinds of things...you set a timer for 15 minutes to clean, vacum, whatever...usually when you do that, you can keep going. So that's a big help.

I also have been able to READ more since stopping MT'ing - really important to me, 'cause I write, and to write well you need to read A LOT.

I just had to put my cat to sleep, I had two, then I was down to one, and now I'm down to zero cats. I'm really in cat withdrawal, and am dying to get two cats!!!!! But I'm not really in a cat friendly environment at the moment.

I still don't have a cute little apartment of my own (I did at one time - all the walls were painted different colors, I like a lot of color). But it might be 50-100 dollars extra to have 2 cats in an apartment.

Oh well, that's my update. I quit my MT job in Spring 2012. Don't know why I'm going on for so long. I really miss having my cats.

Thanks for posting - Me

I try to keep up with your posts to see how you are getting along. We do have some things in common. I love my cats and I would be lost without them and I am so sorry you lost yours. Wanted to say thanks about the link to FlyLady. I really need that right now, depression this season for me. I will be out job hunting in January and am scared to death, been working at home more than 10 years, putting off working on my resume, buying office clothes, etc. It's so easy working at home to not get dressed to shoes everyday and daunting to think about when you're depressed. Anyway, thanks for posting, hope your holidays are nice and sorry about your cat. Books and reading help me a lot too, take me away from my troubles for a little while.
Been there - Done that

I was depressed like no other and I don't know where I found the strength to get out of M-Modal. My husband had been praying every morning for 2 years for something better to come along for me and finally it did. I found some clothes on the sales rack, went to thrift stores and actually found some very nice things and I look better than anybody else in the office. I found it really doesn't take any longer to slip on slacks and a blouse than it did jeans and a T-shirt. Five minutes for makeup and 12 minutes to get to work. The benefits I have reaped, including better self-esteem and less depression, are so worth it. Good luck to you. I hope the New Year has a new job in store for you. Keep trying to find something. You will be very happy you did. I really believe this.
I'm having a hard time - getting myself to
[ In Reply To ..]
go to the thrift stores or work on my resume. I know I have to do it, I have no choice, need to find another job soon. But I keep putting it off. Can't seem to wrap my head around the fact that I have to find a job outside the house. I keep trying positive visualization, but it's not working. Any ideas on how to take those first baby steps? Just do it and not think about it? Once I actually buy those office clothes, it will be real, I guess I'm not quite ready for it to be real. Easier to hide here at home and procrastinate a little while longer. I hate feeling this way.
Maybe you aren't ready yet? - We all

get our last straw at a different pace. I think when you have truly, truly had enough, you will be ready to whip that resume into shape and find some clothes if you have to go raid your friend's and family's closets.
Wish that was the case - me

I am just finishing Andrews for coding, taking certification tests and ready to start looking soon. Also am only working part-time MT Mnow, not able to increase my hours as not enough work, so income is a factor in needing to find a job soon. I don't want my savings to run out completely, as I live alone, no one to depend on. I have to find a job in the next few months, so I don't think it is a matter of my last straw, unless it's my last dollar. But I have been spending time on the Flylady website and doing some of those things, and I think that positivity is rubbing off on me. Such a nice thing to have a clean kitchen, especially when I'm depressed. I haven't done that much cleaning in a long time, feels good. Hopefully, this will lead to more positive steps and actually getting moving instead of hiding. Thanks WMJ for posting about Flylady! Changing my life, Merry Christmas everybody!
Hang in there - See Msg

I sought out a medical office job. Not because I think it's so wonderful to work in a medical office, but I know I'd make a terrible cashier. AND, there was always the chance that I could just wear scrubs. And I do! They have a uniform color, so heck, I don't even have to try and decide what color scrubs to wear, and nobody knows if I wore the exact same thing earlier in the week. I bought 3 pairs of scrubs and that's it for my wardrobe.
Don't invest in a wardrobe yet. Some offices are very casual, you'll have to wait and see on that.

The makeup I wear is a little blush and maybe some lipstick and that's it. No eye makeup. I have a wash and go haircut, don't even need the blow dryer.

I plan to get back on her program after the New Year. She is on Facebook now,in addition to the flylady.net site. Good luck to both of you!
I have a friend who helped me with job hunting - wheres_my_job
[ In Reply To ..]
Actually, she saw a flyer at the library for a job - they were DESPERATE to hire someone, so I got hired and started the next day. My mom actually went and bought me a bunch of work clothes, and then somebody online...hope she is doing ok this Christmas, we aren't in contact now...she sent me a bunch of makeup.

So I can't take credit and say, oh, look at me! I made this transition all by myself! Because I didn't - do you have a family member and/or friend that can kind of "take you on as a project" - I mean, they're invested in you making this transition and want to help you? Or if you belong to some group or church - is there somebody you can team up with? Maybe someone who wants to change jobs also, or maybe there's something you can do for them (I painted my friend a big cheetah, 'cause she loves cheetahs, etc).

I mostly feel some depression in the morning. The rest of the time it's not depression, it's the feeling like I'm boxed in, trapped, and my mind is searching for a way out - is there some way I can only work 4 days a week? Is there some way I can get a grant, a scholarship, a something?

I picked up this great shiny "foil" picture of Kuan Yin (Moon Goddess) at the Salvation Army - now that I look Kuan Yin up online, apparently she gets around via dragon (she stands on a dragon). It's like life is a fire-breathing dragon - but if you make like Kuan Yin, you can ride it like a surfboard. Dragon surfing. Okay, so your toes might get burned a little...

I've got family coming over now...just thought I would hop online...I kind of like the empty, no-family Christmas...I really don't feel like having to say to anyone, "I had to put Bertie to sleep"....

Hope that depression eases up for you. Keep us posted on your job hunting in the New Year!

aww. I know. - I have 6 cats...

I just moved into a cute little apartment of my own 6 weeks ago with all these cats. Fortunately, the landlord lives far away, and even more fortunate every one of them are white. He thinks I only have 2 and will never notice difference.

Wow, 6 cats. I think 2 is my max - I used to (long long ago) take them to the park everyday. Stupid as it may sound, taking my cats to the park was the highlight of my day. My life may have been a tortuous hell at the time, but my mind could wander free at the park - imaginatively, I could go anywhere - the intellectual vise momentarily relenting. All thanks to my cats.
6 cats, all white - cr
[ In Reply To ..]
That is so funny! You'll be able to pull that off for a long time, except the neighbors will wonder about all that litter you go through! I have 3 cats in an apartment that only allows 1. I live in fear of them being found out by a nosy neighbor, but I just can't part with any of them. They're all old, and 2 of them were my mother's and sister's before they passed away and I promised them both I'd take care of them. The third one has hyperthyroidsm and may not last long even with medication. I dread that day so much. My life is otherwise pretty empty and I just live for those cats.
aww. I know that too. - I love cats...
[ In Reply To ..]
Mine are all males and 1 female, which is the mother to all of them before I could get her spayed, the little ho. I've had to put a few down before too, and they don't know what is about to happen, then bury them. It is hearbreaking. Most everybody loves their pets, but cat people are different are a different breed.

Good advice. I decided to quit 3 years ago, and I'm - still job hunting, and still working - S/M

[ In Reply To ..]
for the company that I want to quit working for! Lately, however, I have stepped up the job hunt, and spend several hours a day doing so, and less time transcribing. If they don't like it, they can fire me.

job is possible, just keep trying - used to be mt

[ In Reply To ..]
I quit 1-1/2 years ago. It was very scary at my age, transcriptionist for 37 years. I have made more than twice my income montly with my new job than with MModal, I have had 2 cost of living raises and 3 raises. The first week I was done with MModal my husband said he noticed a huge difference in my outlook on life, etc. Hang in there, it is possible, and it is very rewarding not to be demeaned with this company anymore. I gave my 2-week notice and never transcribed another report. Good luck to all considering the change.

I was scared too - Bye-bye birdie

I did actually have another job doing part clerical and part transcription when I quit, but just want you to know it is wonderful! I make more money, like my coworkers, got nice Christmas gifts from said coworkers, had a lovely Christmas party, and got a CHRISTMAS BONUS!!! I didn't think I could survive outside of MedQuist/M-Modal, but I am not only surviving, but thriving. You can too. I believe we all can.

That should be the first thing you do. Some of the temp jobs pay $10-12 an hour and you can learn new skills.

I quit 2 weeks ago - Old MT

I quit, too. I did have another job lined up. It's really hard to be available for job interviews and also work full time, but something just fell into my lap and I took a couple of hours out of my work day and went on the interview and that was that. It doesn't pay a lot, but guess what? It pays more than I made doing MT, and I get paid holidays, none of this take PTO for a holiday. The health insurance is more, but it's not off the wall.

Best of luck to you.

Congratulations!!!! - Good luck and so proud

Finally. Have been afraid to, but the stress is too much. Have another job and trying to make it on just 1 job... my son isn't happy but I know that the relief will make life better. My hair is getting to gray for this anymore. I just had to send in the notice (which was by the way not acknowledged).
My best to you in your journey to freedom... when one door closes another one opens...

To All - I quit too

If you want to do non-MT work, I would just tell EVERYONE YOU KNOW that you're looking. Don't box yourself into anything in particular. Just tell everyone that you'll do anything. If you're in good physical shape, it could be something physical. If you can't do/don't want physical labor, just say "desk work, phone work, office, work, anything," to everyone you know. That's what I did and somebody caught wind of it through the grapevine, and now I do front office receptionist-type work. To be honest, I'm not even sure exactly what the chain was, but I don't care, I'm just glad I'm here. I think whoever I told didn't specifically put the word out for me, but someone needed an office person and it struck a cord with someone and they told them about me.

Most of all, don't lose hope.

Getting Ouf Of MT, But Cannot Decided Which Way To Go...
Sep 29, 2010

I have made up my mind that I am getting out of MTing.  I am looking into coding through an online program, or getting my bachelors degree (also completely online).  I don't know which way would be more profitable/secure in the long run.  Coding, or getting my bachelors degree (my interests are computer science, psychology, or health information management, wide variety I know).  What do you think? ...

How Pay Should Be Decided
Nov 18, 2012

Here is how I think pay should be decided... 1.  You are new you get 4 CPL until you prove yourself...quality, production, etc., then in 6 months you are evaluated and a raise could be granted, 3% of course. 2.  Everyone should be evaluated on job performance once a year and if you are a good employee a raise should be granted. 3.  I believe any employee who has been with the company for 5-10 years and tier 3 you should automatically be paid 6 CPL.  Let ...

I Have Decided I'm Fed Up With MT, And Getting Out.
Sep 10, 2013

I have a good job for now but am so fed up with people who can't speak English properly, the stuttering, slurring,  mumbling, whispering, and so on, not to mention coroprate bullcrap. I thought I could hang in there to retire, but I'm finally fed up.  Finally figured out something else I can do, a couple things.  I won't have one egg dependent on one basket, and will be much happier in the long run.    Plus no more office crap, which I despise. What I Have Decided....sm

I have decided if this plan does turn out bad I will just sit back and work as usual. I make close to minimum wage now as it is. If I end up making only MW it wont make much of a difference. With that being said, I'll just work everyday and not push my self super hard to meet line requirements (it seems they are getting rid of them) and I wont work my tail off trying to meet all these requirements. I will work and do the best I can without stressing out all the while keeping my eyes op ...

I Have Decided VR Is Just Dangerous!
Jul 31, 2013

Really, with this time of VR, who can actually be accountable for the errors in reports?  My VR is HORRID.  It will completely change the name of medications that the dictator dictates and on and on.  So, when a medical error is made, based on a report where the MT didn't catch a mistake on VR, how can they hold the MT solely responsible?  I mean, we didn't TYPE that error, we just missed a word while proofreading.  I wonder why they would allow something with ...
