After 10 years of MT, finally working outside of home again - LisaCt

Posted: Sep 27, 2013

Got an office job 3 days a week making $15 hour, still will do Mt prn, but won't have to stress anymore about my lines. I am glad I got to stay home with my kids over those years, but if I had to do it again, I would of stayed working. The financial stress that me and my family went through, bankruptcy, never having money to do anything fun, no vacations. I don't think it was worth it. Oh well, they tried to tell us in MT school back in 2001 there was talk of VR then, now its EMR and MTSO are paying so little you have to work 12-16 hour days. Just not worth it anymore.

Why would someone thumbs down this? - Em

Congratulations on your new job. I hope it makes all the difference in your life. I know I'm looking for something outside of MT, too. It is too much stress. I just don't think my self esteem can take any more of it. It is definitely not worth it anymore.

I don't know why someone would give you a thumbs down for taking control of your life and moving out of a dead-end field.

I congratulate you again!

Who gives thumbs down when someone posts fantastic news?

People in denial.

Mean-spirited types.

People whose motto is "misery loves company."

Trolls with elongated jumbo noses, greasy hair, green skin, and oozing zits.

People with such low self-esteem that despite steadily losing pay, benefits, opportunity, and respect, think this is still a viable career option.

A poor, unfortunate current student about two-thirds through the overpriced medical transcription training program and with a pile of student loan debt!

Or, someone who thought thumbs up meant they were happy another MT faced financial hardship, bankruptcy, and was leaving, so they chose down. Maybe they're actually saying they're sad to see this is the unfortunate and probably mostly inevitable outcome in a collapsing industry that they, too, once loved?

Or, they're just stinkin' sore losers! Ha!

Or, maybe they just accidentally checked the dislike instead of the like. I have done that when I meant to give something a "like."

Now, the thing that I really wanted to ask. I have a non-MT job now but had wanted to pick up some extra work in the evenings/weekends. Those of you who are doing that in addition to your regular jobs, could you name some companies I could try? There is nothing local so I would need to find an MTSO. I wouldn't care about making much money, just a little extra spending money. TIA.

I have been looking for an outside job for 6 months. I have revised my resume, went to career classes to brush up on any interviews I might have. I have sent out dozens of resumes on line and I have heard nothing. Please give me some advice on how to find a job, cause I am ready to jump off a bridge. Please?

I have been having the same trouble as the person who posted outside jobs. I have had numerous resumes and applications out there and have had no calls at all. It is very frustrating when you know it is a job that you could probably do, but you never hear from them.

Congrats, I did too - sm

Have gotten 2 paychecks since getting my outside job and honestly I feel rich at this point. I don't make a whole lot of money, but it is steady money and that really, really helps! I still do MT part-time and on top of my job salary, I just really didn't realize how much we were struggling before with just the MT money. I am so very grateful and am looking forward to the years to come.

Oh, and this Caged Bird has an interview today... - MTRockyRoad

I'm very nervous, but not so much about being interviewed -- more that I really need this non-MT job and have been looking for about 8 months, which has been exhausting, so the pressure mounts, so to speak, and also the anticipation...

Anyway, congratulations!

Congratulations! I have been working PT - outside the home

as a receptionist in a chiropractor's office. He is a friend of a friend, who asked her if she knew anyone looking for work. I'm slowly getting comfortable working with people again, but it's fun. I'm not getting rich, but it's more money than I would have made had I stayed on when my MTSO account went 100% VR. I get to wear scrubs, so I'm not spending money on a work wardrobe (a big plus since I hate to shop and spend money on work clothes).

Anyone Take An Outside Job After Working At Home For Years?
Jan 28, 2010

A month or so ago, I sent a resume for a medical/legal transcription position locally and forgot all about it until they called today! Being in the middle of an op report, I wasn't thinking and said yes to an interview on Monday. I haven't worked outside the home in 15 years! I don't really have anything to wear in a lawyer's practice anymore. I don't know if I should cancel the interview or go.  Will I be able to handle working outside the home again? A ...

After 42 Years, I'm Finally...
Sep 25, 2014

I just finished my last keystroke. Ever. After 42 years in the medical transcription industry, I have retired. I will never again plug earphones in my ears and listen to mush mouths and doctors who can't speak English. I started in this field using an electric typewriter and cassette recorder - even Dictaphone belts at one point.  Before there were computers. It's been a long, long rollercoaster ride with lots of ups and downs. I've worked for doctors' offices, hospitals ...

I Left MT Finally After 10 Years
Nov 11, 2013

I struggled with leaving, I put so much into this and granted I got to stay home with my kids when they were small, but the worry about steady money was the price we paid. We filed for bankruptcy and almost lost our house. Thankfully, we got a loan mod which reduced our mtg down from 1700 to 1400. I finally applied on Craigslist to part-time law firm positions and got one for 3 days a week next town over making $15 an hour. I bring home after taxes $300 a week and have 4 days to spend on my ...

After 30 Years Finally Decided To Embrace VR
Feb 11, 2014

This is a part-time 4 hour position, been at it for a month, and cannot get above 600 lines. I am editing on the Ex-Editor platform and I love it. Care to share any pointers, or things I can do to be more productive. I am definitely not using the mouse but still cannot get above 600 lines in 4 hours. I do have a full-time straight transcription position, and thought I would gradually ease into VR to build speed for what I will probably inevitably be doing. ...

Working From Home?
Dec 01, 2009

Hello,   Im just finishing up a medical transcription course/certification program with Allied schools, and I was wondering if there are any of you MT's working from home or are most of you working in a hospital?  Also have any of you done the online certifications and if you did how did you get some experience under your belt to help you with the job?  I was a veterinary technician for years, so I sort of knew what I was getting into, but it has turned out to be a little mo ...

What I Don't Like About Working At Home Right
Mar 02, 2010

now is that I would really love to tell somebody off!! Yes, I know that may sound childish, but this company has put my stress level through the roof, my blood pressure through the roof, and their BS has me so pissed off, if I were in an office where they were I would find great satisfaction in letting them have it verbally, not in writing.  Yes, I would be fired on the spot, but it would be so worth it.  It's just not the same when they don't have to face someone in person.& ...

Working At Home
Mar 09, 2010

Everyone says "I would love to work from home".  Working from home has been having negative effects on me.  I've been doing this for 12 years.  I never used to have anxiety or depression.  Now, I do.  This job is so isolating.  I'm sick and tired of staying home in my PJs.  I try to get out of the house as much as possible, but little trips to the grocery store is not cutting it.  I get depressed staying home all the time.  I lack a social l ...

Getting In A Rut Working From Home
Mar 06, 2012

Becoming pretty much inactive, get up, login and work. Get off, turn on the TV and lay down or maybe spend a few hours on your favorite website. As far as making meals, they are far and few between because you eat in between working, breaks or just grab something totally unhealthy when you get off. Can go a couple of days without showering, lounging in pajamas, maybe groom and fix up once a week to go out for errands. House hold chores suffer because of lack thereof. My bedroom is a t ...

After 4 Years, ASR Finally Got "cabbage" Right.
May 12, 2011

I have changed it at least half a million times to CABG, but it never "learns." I even have it in autocorrect so I just add the space to the end of "cabbage," and it changes it to CABG; however, I had a report where the patient had been eating cabbage.  ASR finally got it right.  Way to go ASR.  One time out of 500,000.  Woo-hoo.  ...

Do You Get Dressed For Your Day At Home Working?
Jan 22, 2010

For years, I NEVER got dressed.  Worked in sweats, pulled my hair back and that was it.  For the past six months or so, I get completely dressed, put on makeup, and for some reason, I feel A LOT better now and enjoy my work more!  That sounds crazy, I agree, but ws wondering how many get dressed to start their day and how many roll out of bed and into the computer chair.  Oh, but I am NOT able to wear shoes though, lol, I can't seem to work my foot pedal with them on:) ...

Questions About Working From Home
Feb 04, 2011

I have a few questions about working from home.  I have a full-time job as a transcriptionist for a hospital, but I have recently applied to a company to do transcription from home, part-time.  I get paid an hourly wage at my job, but the company pays by the dictated minute, and I am not sure if it is a good wage.  They have a minimum requirement of 200 dictated minutes per week, and the pay is $1.15 per dictated minute.  If anyone who works from home could let me know if thi ...

Working With A New Baby At Home....

Hi all :)   I wondered if I might be able to get some advice from those of you who have worked from home with a new baby.  My baby was born in February and I'm due to start back to work soon.  I have an older boy, but I worked outside the home with him.  My baby is breast fed, which makes me wonder about how you handled frequent feedings.  Also, I wanted to know what you used if you needed to keep typing but be able to hold the baby as well.  I thought I would ...

Social Contact And Working At Home

At-home Professions, Working, Unions And Everything Else.

Move From Working At Home To The Outside World
Dec 18, 2013

Has anyone who worked from home and now works outside had trouble adjusting? I'm working outside again after being MT from home and I'm still in adjustment mode. Currently I work in a medical office (not an MT).
