Today I've decided on a personal protest step to help myself. - I am taking my templates home. NO more free ride!

Posted: May 01, 2012

My company has always invited us to create and store template dictations for common use by everyone. I've made many and been happy to share, and since they're good quality they're used by many, even some dictators to set up their own formal templates. It's always pleased me to be a team player, but, let's face it, this is only one more thing that allows my company to hire less skilled people and lower the line rates it pays me.

Just BTW, I figure it costs me probably an average of $20 in time to set one of these up, much more for the ones that allow anyone but me and a few others to do some of the more awful dictators. Those can take weeks to build as I painfully figure words and phrases out and add them for reference.

In any case, my personal stand: As of today I am moving all my templates from the common pool to personal storage. I do regret no longer sharing with my fellow MTs, but I will no longer make it easier for the company to hire lower-skilled workers and, in turn, lower the rates it pays me.

I will no longer enable the company to just drop anyone and everyone onto my accounts because they can use my templates to work almost as quickly as me. Leaving me sitting on my hands "flexing" as I wait for work to turn up.

Those in a similar position, please join me in taking a step that will have an effect. No more free ride!

I have a theory... - and I know it sounds weird

[ In Reply To ..]
but hear me out.

I think that the higher your skill level, the more difficult work they send you (obviously) BUT that once the VR machine has learned enough to complete say 90% of the report correctly...then those dictators are given to the people making slightly less per line--but probably more for hour. I can't tell you the HOURS I've spent on dictators that should NOT be allowed to do VR by anyone's standards who is remotely professional, only to find after a few weeks I never see that dictator again in my queue. I'll check once in awhile and he's still doing work, and usually someone doing the VR for it has glaring newbie errors (I do realize newbies have to start somewhere).

But my theory is they use you for your knowledge, keep giving you s@@tty dictators, and once the machine masters them those go to people who make less per line/more per hour and you get the next batch of crap.

Have a Theory.... - Weary

I absolutely 100% agree with that...if you have great skills and a good ear, Nuance makes sure the new accounts' super hard crazy bad ESL dictators are assigned to your queue, then when they get recognized, anybody gets them or they disappear. Any good dictators, after they get voice recognized, are never seen again - they are not even in the whole queue any more. What happens to them (sent overseas, perhaps, which is a no-no on many accounts)? That was my experience for the entire time I wasted with Nuance. I could have made a living if it wasn't for getting 80%ESL new dictators constantly. I rarely got a good voice, let alone a voice that I had worked on for more than a week or 2 (and would have been somewhat comfortable with by then). This made it impossible to increase productivity. I averaged minimum wage, and on my very best days almost 10 dollars an hour!!! Nuance does everything to make it very hard to get decent line counts, unless you've been working for them for a long time and have your accounts established and you're not messed around with the constant changing - that has to be why some people do not understand the hardships many of us are having (or else the posters are Nuance management trying to mitigate the mainly negative opinions of them posted here). Saying it is the transcriptionist's fault for bad line counts is a slap in the face, totally uncalled for and just plain ignorant. IT IS NOT the fault of the transcriptionist - it is Nuance! I have over 20 years of excellent experience and have always exceeded required line counts and QA, I create as many shortcuts and expanders as possible and am highly skilled. I worked very hard and don't have distractions. Nuance sucks and is a horrible company to work for, period. Never again. I'll do anything other than working for 4 and 8 cpl under the conditions Nuance binds you to. I won't be used and abused in this way ever again. I still love transcription, and even like editing. I think they want us to leave so they can go to Congress and/or The Joint Commission and say that they can't get enough good American-based MTs and they just have to be allowed to ship everything overseas...all about the dollar and how to squeeze even more profit. I hope things change for the better in the future, but until then, I'm outta here.

You are - correct.

That's exactly what they do. It galls them to think an MT is making decent pay, so they watch as your line count rises, and then they take that account from you.

Another Step Closer To Andrews Today!
Apr 28, 2012

I've been socking away a little bit here and there for a while now and I am getting so close to having the tuition. It's amazing how the little changes can add up to so much savings. The first thing I gave up about a year ago was buying an iced coffee every day, which I figured out at about $15/week x 52 weeks was equal to $780! I had a yard sale and got rid of things I obviously didn't want or need. I just finished rolling some more coins and I can't believe how much that ...

Step-by-step Medical Coding By Carol Buck?
Nov 01, 2012

Hello. I was just wondering if anyone has experience with the above mentioned book? I was planning on getting the work book as well. I also wanted to know what other books I would need. I was going to get the 2013 addition for all books needed. I don't have the money to take a full course right now, but I would like to "get my feet wet" and see if this is the right field for me. Thanks. ...

UPMC MTs Protest Post Nuance Outsourcing
Oct 31, 2013

These are transcriptionists that were pretty much forced to sign onto Nuance once they took over the transcription of their hospital. No option for UE or severance! After working for Nuance see how much their pay drops. Pretty disgusting, actually. We have all experienced it, but gradually for us, bit by bit, but these poor ladies got a huge dose all at once and went from making good money and good benefits to minimum wage. ...

Getting Ouf Of MT, But Cannot Decided Which Way To Go...
Sep 29, 2010

I have made up my mind that I am getting out of MTing.  I am looking into coding through an online program, or getting my bachelors degree (also completely online).  I don't know which way would be more profitable/secure in the long run.  Coding, or getting my bachelors degree (my interests are computer science, psychology, or health information management, wide variety I know).  What do you think? ...

How Pay Should Be Decided
Nov 18, 2012

Here is how I think pay should be decided... 1.  You are new you get 4 CPL until you prove yourself...quality, production, etc., then in 6 months you are evaluated and a raise could be granted, 3% of course. 2.  Everyone should be evaluated on job performance once a year and if you are a good employee a raise should be granted. 3.  I believe any employee who has been with the company for 5-10 years and tier 3 you should automatically be paid 6 CPL.  Let ...

I Have Decided I'm Fed Up With MT, And Getting Out.
Sep 10, 2013

I have a good job for now but am so fed up with people who can't speak English properly, the stuttering, slurring,  mumbling, whispering, and so on, not to mention coroprate bullcrap. I thought I could hang in there to retire, but I'm finally fed up.  Finally figured out something else I can do, a couple things.  I won't have one egg dependent on one basket, and will be much happier in the long run.    Plus no more office crap, which I despise. What I Have Decided....sm
Nov 30, 2014

I have decided if this plan does turn out bad I will just sit back and work as usual. I make close to minimum wage now as it is. If I end up making only MW it wont make much of a difference. With that being said, I'll just work everyday and not push my self super hard to meet line requirements (it seems they are getting rid of them) and I wont work my tail off trying to meet all these requirements. I will work and do the best I can without stressing out all the while keeping my eyes op ...

I Think I Have About Decided On Scribe
Jul 19, 2012

I'd like to go into coding, and I think I'd be really good at it too, but medical scribe looks like the direction to go that would require the least amount of training.  I think as soon as the summer is over and I've taken my vacation and used up some PTO, I will apply for that.  Wish me luck. ...

I Have Decided To Quit....
Dec 23, 2012

This was not an easy decision.  I will be able to devote every day after Jan. 1st to find a job.  At this point, all I have to do is find something that pays minimum wage, isn't that sad!  But, something with a future and a company that gives raises, no matter how small and good insurance and time off.  This company will lose a very good MT who has had it.  I have tried to communicate on these boards my support of MModal.  It gave me hope.  I have none now ...

I Have Decided VR Is Just Dangerous!
Jul 31, 2013

Really, with this time of VR, who can actually be accountable for the errors in reports?  My VR is HORRID.  It will completely change the name of medications that the dictator dictates and on and on.  So, when a medical error is made, based on a report where the MT didn't catch a mistake on VR, how can they hold the MT solely responsible?  I mean, we didn't TYPE that error, we just missed a word while proofreading.  I wonder why they would allow something with ...

Oct 09, 2010

EMR - My Personal Experience
Nov 02, 2009

I have been an IC for past 13 years with all local physician office accounts. As of July this year, I now have only one left due to the use of the EMR. While those of you are saying that EMR will not phase out transcriptionist..well that may be so, but in my experience it has already phased me out. The doctors have sent absolutely no further dictation since they began using this and they told me they do not plan to. So, I am now out of a job that I really depended on. Just giving my perspective. ...

Decided To Take A Job Doing SR With M-modal. Is That A Good Program?
Jan 26, 2012

I have limited experience with SR..  did it for a while about 4 years ago.  Couldn't make any money on it though.  I'm hoping this program is a lot better than the one I used back then and will actually LEARN.  Can people make money doing SR now??  Sadly, though, I think this is the future of transcription. ...

After 30 Years Finally Decided To Embrace VR
Feb 11, 2014

This is a part-time 4 hour position, been at it for a month, and cannot get above 600 lines. I am editing on the Ex-Editor platform and I love it. Care to share any pointers, or things I can do to be more productive. I am definitely not using the mouse but still cannot get above 600 lines in 4 hours. I do have a full-time straight transcription position, and thought I would gradually ease into VR to build speed for what I will probably inevitably be doing. ...
