My right shift key is sticking. I opened a Coke at my desk - NKC

Posted: Dec 03, 2010

and it spewed.  It only dripped a little bit on the keyboard and I immediately cleaned it up, but obviously a drop or two got down into the shift key and now it is sticking and it is driving me bonkers.  It's a new keyboard so I really don't want to have to pop out the key.  Any other suggestions?

I have the same problems with my keyboard and I have found that alcohol instead of water (damp not dripping) on a Qtip works best. Actually after several years, my keyboard has eventually gotten so bad, I just broke down last night and ordered me a new one, as the keys on the one I use now seem to take so much pressure to get to type, keys are sticking etc. Hopefully it will get here in the next day or so, as I am really looking forward to not having to pound on the keys anymore. Try alcohol instead of water and see if it works better...hope it helps!

i've popped keys off old AND new keyboards. i also vacuum the keyboard and CPU every week or two, and remove all the keys and vacuum the keyboard every month or two.

as for the coke, the alcohol is a good idea. another thing that works well is a "awesome" cleaner. it's yellow. dollar stores sell it. great all-purpose cleaner. if there' something icky on the keyboard or between the keys, i pop 'em, dip a Q-tip into the cleaner, and squidge the Q-tip to just damp.

if you're not fussy, you might find a perfectly good keyboard at a pawnshop or thrift shop. (personally, i don't care if mine is a "matching set!)

I've read advice from computer geeks and - they say

To actually run your keyboard through the dishwasher.

You put it in the top rack, no soap, no dry cycle.

Then comes the problem part...you have to let it dry for a good long while. Helps to have an extra keyboard.

Google "keyboard dishwasher" and you'll find better instructions about how to go about it.

Looking For Health Insurance And Opened A Pandora's Box
Mar 24, 2011

After being without insurance since losing my job, I decided to see what's to offer online for someone with a spouse with pre-existing condition. Two minutes after getting online quotes, I started getting phone calls. The phone has been ringing off the hook all afternoon.  I hate this. I can barely afford insurance anyway, but we do need it.  Did you know there are 'associations' that are now bunching different health insurance companies into a database and they can get ...

Is Anyone Sticking Around To See How Things Go?
Feb 17, 2010

I recently lost my MT job with a pretty decent company.  It was due to lack of work.  I know this is happening a lot these days, and I've been reading a lot of the posts here.  I know that no field is perfect, but I have to do something.  How many of you plan on (or can) stick around to see how things go, and how many of you are going back to school or getting into a different field? ...

Footpedal Sticking
Mar 09, 2012

Does anyone have any suggestion to stop a footpedal from sticking?  I have to push on it several times to get the voice to play and then when I lift my foot up the voice files continues to play.  I tried blowing in it to remove dust but that didn't help.  It just started this morning and it is driving me crazy!!! Thanks in advance! ...

I Think If I Was Sticking Around With MM I Would Try The Coding
Mar 11, 2014

What do you have to lose? The only thing that would turn me off is the 2 year requirement to stay here but a lot of companies do that. Some companies provide college education reimbursement if you stay working for them for so long after you graduate.  I think MM knows that transcription industry is in the toilet so they are focusing on whatever else they can sell to customers and look good to their creditors. They now have a D rating on Standard and Poors which is not good for a company.&nb ...

FOOT PEDAL STICKING
Nov 03, 2012

I just wanted to thank whoever suggested WD-40 for foot pedal sticking.  I have an IN-USB-1 foot pedal that was sticking.  I did try cleaning the dust out -- put it back together but it was still sticking -- that is when I would depress the PLAY button, it sometimes would keep playing and press again to stop -- continually -- sometimes I would press the PLAY button and it would not play, etc.  Someone on here suggested WD-40 without taking the pedal apart.  I took this a ...

Standing Desk
Apr 23, 2012

Has anyone tried a stand-up desk or just tried to stand while typing?  With all the stuff in the news lately about how dangerous sitting is, I would like to give it a try.  Just wondering if anyone has been doing it and has any tips.  It seems like it would be a little hard on the legs when trying to stand and use the footpedal. I have seen some new treadmill desks that look awesome, but obviously wouldn't work for us using footpedals. ...

Treadmill Desk
Nov 22, 2013

Hello!  I have been an MT for going on 10 years now and have been thinking about a standing desk.  However, I have a tendency to stand in a way that I end up hurting the outsides of my feet.  I had an idea for a treadmill desk, but I'm stuck on the foot pedal issue and noise level.  I did a search and found a post on MTstars by someone who said it wouldn't' work because treadmills are too loud and one wouldn't be able to hear the dictation.  My work a ...

Computer Desk Suggestions?
Jul 19, 2010

I need a computer desk for a small space. So the desk must be small, obviously. ;p It won't be for a desktop but for a laptop. I will be putting the laptop on a riser or lifter or stand, whatever its called. You know what I'm talking about. lol. I also will be using an external keyboard with the laptop, so it must have one of those keyboard pullout things. The most important aspect is that it needs to be an ergonomically correct desk. Any suggestions? Wal-Mart or a ...

Needing Advice On Desk Setup

For some reason I have recently become very, very uncomfortable at my desk.  My right leg is always hurting, falling asleep, or getting a charlie horse as I type.  I have a cordless mouse so I can switch hands, but it doesn't seem to matter, as both shoulders hurt from using it.  Also, my butt goes numb - LOL.  I really enjoy being a transcriptionist, but I cannot handle the discomfort much longer.  I have a very good chair and a fairly new desk.  Aga ...

Work Station/computer Desk

I am needing to downsize from a large computer armoire to a smaller workstation. Has anyone found something they are happy with? I find that most of them have too narrow of a keyboard shelf for our larger keyboards plus the mouse. I don't need much - just room for the monitor to set on top and somewhere to put the PC. Also, so many that I look at do not have room underneath them for the foot pedal. Any suggestions? Thanks ...

Interesting Job Crossed My Desk Today

An interesting job announcement appeared in my email today.  It was for a large vascular practice in Tampa, Florida.  It would be a good entry job for a new CPC.   You know how some people here insist that no one will hire you without experience?  For this one, experience was preferred, but not mandated, and ... even more encouraging ... a CPC was not required, either.         ...
