Hope there aren't any San Fran MT's out there! - New minimum wage

Posted: Nov 05, 2014

San Francisco voters approved a bill to raise the minimum wage to $15 yesterday!  I hope no Nuance MT's live there (HA! Like a Nuance MT could afford to live in the most expensive city in the US).  At the current line rates for editing, they'd have to produce over 375 LPH to not have make-up-pay!

I don't know for certain that Nuance has a federal contract, but assuming they do for their Dragon software (or speech recognition software, period), I wonder wonder if Nuance's new "exciting" stuff might be that they're splitting off the company so that they don't have to comply with Obama's executive order to pay a minimum of $10.10 to employees?

Again, I don't know if Nuance has a contract, and we all know our pay stubs and W2's actually say Transcend DBA Nuance, so maybe it's already a seperate company.  Too bad the IRS doesn't have a rule that when the minimum wage increases, so should production pay.

I believe Nuance does not hire California MTs? - anon

I believe California has different rules...like you have to pay overtime for anything over 8 hours a DAY, not just 40 hours a week. At least I think that is the way it used to be.

I'm in CA - AnotherAnon

Of course, I am an acquired employee but I've been with N for 2 years now, and yes OT is anything over 8 hours a day.

I live across the bay from San Francisco. I'm - thrilled at the new $15/hour min. wage! (sm)

Now I can afford to quit this lousy, $5/hour job and take a min. wage job at Starbuck's. Heck, on that kind of pay, I can even afford bridge fare!

That's Inscribe who won't hire from CA - nm

I think Northeast was another one that - discriminated against CA workers.

Doesn't Washington state have min wage at $15? - nm

Only Seattle, I believe. sm - WA MT

Our state min wage is 9.32. Other cities in the state are also lobbying for the $15 min, and if my city approves it, there is absolutely no way for me to transcribe enough to cover it. I get paid MUP way too many times now.

Do you get in trouble for MUP - Or just expected to meet 7.25

[ In Reply To ..]
I've often wondered if those of you who live in states with higher minimum wage get in trouble for getting MUP. I've had MUP a few times since starting, usually when work is incredibly low and I'm working accounts I'm not familiar with, or when starting a new account, but it's usually more of a threat than anything.

But since, to my knowledge, we are told we just need to meet the minimum of 186, at speech clinic rates, that's only $7.44 an hour. So if your minimum is $9.32, that would mean you'd have to do 233 LPH at the edit rate. So, do they get mad if you have MUP but are above the $7.25 rate, or are they expecting you to consistently be at the higher rate or more?

I just started a new account this week and know I'll have MUP. My TSM used to send out specs for all of the team members (with their names removed), and there were always people with lots and lots of MUP. I'm assuming they were on this account, and I really do not see how I am going to make any money here. It's horrible. Between the account specifics and the dictators. I think I've typed the same doctor once since starting on Sunday.

Sorry. Had to vent!
Have to make minimum wage for the state we live in. nm - me

It's a gradual increase and will be up to $15/h - in 2018

[ In Reply To ..]
Seattle (though not Washington State) had previously voted for the same gradual increase in minimum wage.

See, this is why people need to research facts on MTStars...because so many people on here just spout off without giving all the facts and everyone believes them just like it's a news source.

Now Versus Later - Meh

It appears, indeed, according to Googling it, that minimum wage in San Francisco at present is only $10.75, but in 5/2015, it will be $12.25 and finally in 2018 will be $15.00. The year 2018 is pretty far from now and maybe MT field will even be history. Regardless, I bet most of us griping on this forum won't be working as MT anymore anyhow.

I included a link to CNN! - OP

I know that it wasn't going to be instant, and I never said it was. But the discussion around raising the minimum wage and how we are affected has been hot-button for a while now. I merely was mentioning that San Fran had voted to increase their minimum wage (which again, I seriously doubt any MT can afford to live there).

Even if it's not $15 tomorrow, or even in January, there ///is/// a gradual increase that starts soon, and we are WAY overdue for a minimum wage increase federally.

Used To Hope For Lots Of Work, Now I Hope For NJA Or To Be FIRED
Oct 09, 2013

This job is not worth the trouble.  It certainly does nothing for me when I open the "paycheck" every 2 weeks and see that despite my 40 "power hours" every week, I made less than last time.  No matter what, I cannot manage to make a decent living here any more.  I am over it.  Sad to admit, and yes, the shame is on me, but I do wish for NJA or even better, to be FIRED from this place.  Just had to get this off my chest before I burst into flames of fury at the horrid qu ...

A Little Holiday Message Of Hope (I Hope!)
Dec 10, 2013

Hi, everyone. A year or so ago, I read a message by a former transcriptionist who had gotten into medical school and was at last working as a physician. I'm sure it's still here in the archives somewhere; please forgive me for not digging it up. I remain grateful to that poster to this day. Yes, even if she was making it all up! It still inspired me so much. Last month I began work at only the second job I have ever held outside the MT field. It took me seemingly forever to find it, a ...

What Successful MTs Are Saying To Each Other When You Aren't Around
Jun 28, 2012

The "When You Aren't Around" part is just to get your attention. I know that many of you are also successful MTs. There are many others who believe they are and will argue until the cows come home to convince us that they are, when they aren't. Most successful MTs have seen the ones I'm talking about. I've been a successful MT for years. Throughout the years I've known a lot of MTs, some managing to get jobs and somehow keep them because of connections or friendships, o ...

An MT Supervisor Told Me (Regarding MTs Who Aren't Doing Well)
Mar 12, 2010

An MT supervisor told me that when they aren't happy with an MT's work because they aren't following instructions or are getting sloppy, they just take them off the schedule. Sometimes they do it gradually and other times leave them with little or no work. They keep the work for the MTs who are doing the best job with the least fuss. Interesting. ...

All The Things We Do That Aren't Production
Dec 08, 2014

Here's the thing that gets me.  We have a punch in for production or continuing education, but what about all the general stuff we do that we either have to do on our own time, or if we do punch in, it will go against our production rate.  And it may be that it is just a small amount of time everyday, but the fact is the salary people don't have to read their emails or maintain their computer systems on their own time.  We have our Quality person who is maintaining a boo ...

Can You Succeed In Coding If You Aren't Good At MT
Apr 05, 2012

I'm very interested in learning new things. I have a certificate in cosmetology, an associate degree in business admin/microcomputers (worthless now because I learn pre-windows), had a real estate license (couldn't make money in my area), a dental assitant diploma (can no longer work in the field due to a latex allergy and a hip replacement due to a tumor), and a MT certiificate. All the other fields academically I did VERY well at but MT was a struggle for me because I could never dev ...

How Would You Explain Why You Aren't Working At This Time?
Aug 30, 2013

I was terminated in March and now I cannot find a job. I have been working for 31 years, and this past account was a disaster. (I worked for 2 years at this company but moved to another account and had to learn so many, many things, and one of the docs were so bad, that when I asked for help I instead got a critical error. The TSM's seemed to not like me and would not help me learn VR (because my immediate supervisor went on leave of absence). So I ran out of work after 5 hours every day a ...

Aren't Bonuses Supposed To Be Paid Out Tomorrow?
Jul 30, 2013

Aren't bonuses supposed to be paid out tomorrow?  I went on to ADP because normally your check that is coming will show up a day or two in advance and there is nothing there so I guess that means no bonus.  I got one last time and I thought this will probably the last one I ever get with this company due to the new errors that I have all of a sudden started making after 15 years of typing.  ...

Dictator Ranting About How His Stats Aren't Typed
Nov 30, 2013

I just had a dictator rant to me about how none of his stat reports are being typed in an urgent fashion. The thing is, he only dictates that they are stat reports, saying "this is a priority report" on his dictations, but never marks the reports themselves as stats so they end up being distributed as regular dictations. It looks like someone wasn't paying attention in training. He must think we all have telepathy and know what is dictated in a report before even getting them. ...

Landmark Frustrations - Aren't Allowed To Work On My Account Due To Low Volume
Feb 08, 2013

Once again, we aren't allowed to work on my account due to low volume.  This is about the fifth time in the past week.  I've only been with Landmark for 6 or 7 months and I'm really starting to regret taking a position there.  It was great for the first few months, but then the work started disappearing.  Lucikly, I have a second interview next week with another company.  If I get hired, I'll probably just keep Landmark as a side job, because that's really all it ...

Is There Hope For My Pay?
Jul 12, 2010

So... I've been at Medquist for about 6 months - I was a new grad so I only make 0.05 a line (I know, I know, save your comments about that people!). I actually have really good accounts so I never make less than $12 an hour so at least I'm not making minimum wage. But anyway I was wondering if anyone knew what people with a year experience start at and what my hopes are for raises in the future. Surely they can't pay me 0.05 forever, right?? right??? ...

Is There Any Hope For Me?
Aug 27, 2010

I am no where near as experienced as some MTs even though I have been transcribing for 12 years.  Problem is, I have only done ortho.  When my in-house job went with the service, I went to.  Then my work was offshored, so I moved to a different company, still doing ortho, and making better money, about $40,000 a year.  Now the company has lost that account and I am unable to go with it. I have been switched to an acute care account (clinic work only), doing VR.  Can any ...

There Is Hope MT's!...well For Now
May 02, 2012

Well, just quit Nuance.  Can't believe I made it nearly 2 years, after being at OSi for 5 years.  They sent all my work overseas and there has not been any work there for the past month!  After reading many many posts here I thought MT days were over!  Then a job came up, I replied and for 2 weeks I have been working for a small local company, no VR, you can copy and paste for your lines (instead of it being against "HIPAA policies" per Nuance!) and what...a local Englis ...

The pay is twice what I was making at my previous place. NO ESL, VR, only straight typing. Most importantly, an amazing caring and understanding TL. I am left alone to do what nee ...

There Is Hope Out There After All
Nov 18, 2012

Got fired from MModal two weeks ago after 12 years with them for not making quite the minimum wage for my state (one of the highest). I was devastated as only needed to hang on for 2 more years before retirement age and afraid I would not get another MT job after being fired for the first time in my life, but also a little relieved as I knew it would force me to find something that pays better, MT or non-MT. I took my daughter and baby to their pediatrician appointment a week ago Friday and got ...

I.N.T.E.G.R.I.T.Y Is Too Much To Hope For
Jun 29, 2014

Too many MTs on an account now that almost all of it is VR and shipped off overseas?  Nuance COULD choose to lay us off (honorably) and eliminate a bunch of sassy MTs that have been around the block too many times to be run off with the trickery and disrespectful planted errors (that actually do compromise patient care and encourage medical malpractice claims).  Honestly. I.N.T.E.G.R.I.T.Y. starts at the top.  Stop lying when you acquire these new clinc MTs. They will NOT all ha ...

I am now an ex-Nuance employee and happy to be so. I Hope MQ Eats Up WMX!
Sep 02, 2010

The biggest irony and the best thing we can wish for is that Webmedx gets eat up by Medquist and they lose everything! I was a QA and the editing on those accounts, especially on MModal was ATROCIOUS.  Everytime you went to a new report you had to reset audio. EVERY TIME. A Small Ray Of Hope For MTs
Sep 02, 2011

Recently, one of our local hospitals opened up 4 full time jobs to QA the work they are getting from their vendor.  It seems the doctors were complaining about the quality of their reports.  My hope is that other hospitals as well will see that you get what you pay for and that the lower rates they are demanding followed by the lower rates paid to qualified MTs working for companies like MQ results in the loss of the most qualified MTs and inferior work being produced by less qualified ...
