buch of vipers aren't we - ancient MT

Posted: Aug 23, 2010

I am sooo sick and tired of the "snping and snarking" on this board and it is ALL over - I  have been an MT for 30+ years and seen this profession "dowm the crapper".  I live in Miami  -- AVERAGE rent for a one bedroom @1200.  Can I make it, can I get food stamps  -NO but I am supporting the "illegals who can in this country.  America  - I am sick and tired of "I  CANT LIVE OF LEFTOVERS because of hubby or S/O  -- guess what, having to move, and I make HOMEMADE egg sandwiches.  Its not life WITH fast food, its without and learning to deal with it   -- It is called QUIT being a slave to children and husband.  If you cook, they don't like it   -- TOUGH.  -- Franlky, you have a job, start saying NO to friends, family etc.  -- Its not called "union" but its called "control." Not being on the boards (Im guitly)  -- taking a break so on and so forth.  sorry but Im close to being homeless and STRESSED!!!

Well, some here are. So, okay! Best of luck - Live Free.

cutting loose. Really. Go find that independence from complaints and serenity instead of demands at home. Two may live cheaper together than apart, but one alone lives cheaper still. Especially toward the outer runs of the bus lines, maybe near a good friend or relative. It sounds like your kids should be old enough to make their own sandwiches anyway. BTW, I make my own egg salad and most everything else and definitely recommend it as a way of having it just as you like.

What you did not seem to understand is that I like a LOT of these posters are suffering. I live in Miami -- AVERAGE rent here for a DECENT one bedroom is about 1200-1500 a month. Many of us are single as I am and I don't have a husband. I do have a significant other, but he is also struggling financially. My kids are grown and on their own and I have NEVER once supported them, like a lot of people seem to do with paying the kids cell phone bills, and for the little "extras." I knew of a fellow MT whose 20-year-old daughter, working at Golden Corral and went out and bought a Lincoln Navigator. Guess who is making the car payments to the tune of $550 a month now?

I am about to get evicted from my current place, and having to live on tuna salad, macaroni and cheese and eggs fixed "101 ways," because I am NOT a minority and because I make a certain amount of dinero, I don't qualify for food stamps.

However, I see people who come on this board and other boards, complaining because "hubby won't eat leftovers, kid won't eat certain foods, etc., and kids, hubby and family don't understand the fact that since we work at home, we should be able to do it all.

I agree with a lot of these posters that have been on here recently, that these nationals have to start paying us a wage that is comparable to our experience. Lets see, 8 cents a line for regular transcription and 4 cents per line for VR, just does NOT cut it. Also, I am working for a national, and still in that learning curve, so getting paid probably $8.00/hour training pay.

In May, my circumstances changed with the death of my MTSO. I was able to pay what bills I had on time and had money left over. Starting to work for a national and of course, it's time involved. Let's see, interview, then the next week, set up training etc., all this time, is of course with me getting NO pay and/or working for a service as a new employee who limits you to doing x number of reports a day. My stress level right now is through the roof. I also have another account, which utilizes a C-phone, straight transcription, but with trying to find a place to live, I can't really have the one phone line that I have tied up with the C-phone.

So many of us are in the same boat and it is REALLY time for the MTSOs to be held accountable. I have been in this profession for over 30 years and just in the last few months have seen this profession go into the toilet -- "It's a VERBATIM account, have to follow BOS rules, but I get called on the carpet by QA because I leave notes and of course, working for this particular national my pay gets docked. Right now, being in my mid-50s, I am disgusted as to what this profession has become.

I'm really sorry for what you're going through. I - wannie

think some of us with husbands or significant othes don't really realize what it's like to be the sole supporter for a home. I know how bad it can be with a husband because some weeks it's hard even with both our incomes, so I really can't imagine what it would be like on my own trying to keep a house/apartment running, keeping enough food in my belly to be able to work. Thankfully, my husband and my son will eat leftovers until they're gone. We don't live fancy. We all have cell phones so got rid of our house phone. I also buy generic brands of lots of items and still it's hard. Once again, I really am sorry for what you're going through and hope that things begin to look better soon. God bless you!

Why do you keep posting on all the boards? I'm sorry - me

[ In Reply To ..]
you are struggling, but a lot of us are.

One time a local grocery store had a sale on potatoes - buy 1 bag, get 2 free. I made potato soup, potato pancakes, baked potatoes, and a couple of casseroles that were mainly potato. I got one of the cooked chickens from the grocery store deli that they marked down because they can only keep them for so long. I think I paid $4 for it and we had it for 4 meals. When we had eaten all the meat I cooked the carcass for broth to make soup.

We have even dumpster dived before. We found food that was perfectly good and it had been boxed up so it didn't get nasty.

I lost a job that was sent to India. I didn't realize how good I had it at the time. I got another job almost immediately but took a $10,000 cut in pay, have to work a strict schedule, have to work at least 1 weekend day every week. I'm glad to have a job and right now. If I don't like my situation I can accept that it is what it is, or I can do something to make it better. We all have choices, some better than others.

If Miami is too expensive, move. You're going to have to move anyway. I find it hard to believe that between you and your s/o that you can't come up with enough resources. Surely you have friends/family members who will move you if you rent a truck.

We are sooo smug arent we - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
Excuse me, but I have done the same thing as you. I have lived on Hamburger Helper and made enough food to stretch over several meals and frozen the leftovers, holiday time comes and I take the leftover bones and carcass and make soup stock out of it.

What I resent, is the fact that you made a very SNIDE and SNIPPY comment about my living in Miami. It has been my home for several years. My significant other and I do NOT live together. He is 62 and I am 55 and slightly disabled. To rent a truck and try to lift heavy furniture, is out of the question and as well all know, being an MT at home is a rather isolative life, so trying to find people to help is nearly impossible. MY family, father, son, daughter, SIL, sisters and BILs are all in the Midwest. I have hopefully found another place here and am hiring a moving company to come in, pack what little needs to be packed and move from one point to the other.

Also, I even contacted one of the local churches in the area to assist with moving; however, not a lot of people have trucks here in Miami. It's like any big city and what gets me is some of the narrow-minded attitudes on this board at times. I guess there are certain people that have their "small town utopia" in their best interests and some of these people have never traveled 100 miles beyond where they live.

All I made was a comment regarding the general state of transcription and what has happened to the lives of fellow MTs because of the wage factor. I work hard and am trying to work 2 jobs, but as I stated before, when you are single, going through training and take a SUBSTANTIAL hit on your income, it makes a difference.
She has a point though - MTs CAN move and keep job - mobile as we wanna be
[ In Reply To ..]
I know, reality bites, but seriously sometimes you have to make SURVIVAL choices. Yes, you "want" to live in Miami, but you don't HAVE to, and as you admit, you don't really have any family there or any kind of help network.

I was in the same boat as you, living in Gulfport, MS and liking it. Even made it through Katrina just fine. But a year after, they more than doubled my rent because they could. I felt the rent was outrageous and started looking, but all the landlords in the city had made a pact to jack the rent up.

So I got smart - did I "need" to be THERE? Nope. I had 2 in-house jobs there but I realized I could try working at home and I realized if I got a job doing that I could move ANYWHERE, and my goal was to move where the rent was cheap. I headed up to the Tennessee mountains and found a 2 bedroom house for less than I had been paying PRIOR to the rent hikes for a tiny studio. And I love it here - no hurricaines.

So think about your WANTS vs your NEEDS. You can live a much better life if your rent isn't taking the majority of your paycheck. Its your CHOICE to live in a place where the rent is outrageous. You can choose to do something different and make a change that will help you, or you can stay there and gripe about the high cost of living.

And yes, I agree MTSOs are killing us, they're killing me, I'm struggling too; maybe I'll have to take in some boarders (I now have 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and 2 living rooms and pay $450 a month). Because I CHOSE not to stay on the coast. Think about your choices and talk about whether your SO is willing to move with you. Paradise is where you make it.

Why are MTSOs responsible for you? - Not an MTSO

[ In Reply To ..]
No one twisted your arm and said you have to be an MT. No MTSO has signed you to an indentured servitude.

I'm struggling too. Thank god for soup so I can each pretty cheap (albeit not healthy). EVERYTHING I make one pay goes to my apartment- nothing left over, not even a dollar. I can't go visit my kids or family because I can't afford gas in the car.

People are struggling ALL over this country right now, it's not just MTs. I know of people who have lost lovely homes due to job loss. I live in an apartment complex and the waiting list is now long (only because they allow pets, not because they're cheap- my rent is $1600/month).

I have health issues but no healthcare so I dont go to the doctor and have cut out all but the barest of minimums of my medications because I can't afford them. (Thank god for Target $4.00 plan)

My point is, I'm not on here BLAMING someone else for my situation. It's MY situation. As you've seen, not unlike a lot of American's situations. So I work two jobs. I don't hold an MTSO accountable because I can't pay my bills. That situation is based on MY choices- I have every right to go find another job or make new opportunities for myself.

I'm surely not making light of your situation, I recognize the stressed feeling REALLY well. But you DO have options. Get out of MT and go find a job. Take on more MT. Move to a cheaper place. Move out of Miami. None of these options are ATTRACTIVE options, but they ARE options.

I hope you're able to find a solution and you can begin to feel less hopeless... it's a horrible, horrible feeling. But please don't blame someone else because of it.

[ In Reply To ..]
complaints of immigrants, minorities, and having to make egg salad.

Your 30 years of experience is still a great asset that should earn working full time at VERY least a modest but sustainable living, well above minimum wage, even in these difficult times. Maybe careful review of HOW you do your work would pay off big time, even if you have to pay another MT whose earnings are much higher for an analysis. The nature of our work has changed, and how we use our keyboards has changed with it. If you see no means of improvement, then it truly is time to get out.

In Response to your post - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
It is my situation as well. However, we have companies that are paying squat for our work. I am working 14-16 hours a day and getting "training pay." My frustration lies with these companies who make, what I believe are "demands" on the MT -- "you have to make x amount of lines doing VR, you have to do x amount of lines doing straight transcription." I have been in this field for many years and I, now like a lot of MTs on this board feel that VR is going to be the death of the MT profession. "Use the keyboard shortcuts." Well 1-2 particular shortcuts on the VR program that I use requires at least 3 keystrokes -- 2 on the left and one on the right. I have problems with the right side of my body, so sometimes it is easier for me to use my mouse but what gets me are these companies THREATENING that if you "don't meet their production requirements, you will be terminated." Everyone is different, everyone has their own style of working, etc. The transcription platform I am on right now (Editscript), I can't even use the word expander that I have used for MANY years because the programmers, once a voice file is loaded in wrote a code that makes the expander unusable. I have had to resort to Autocorrect. I believe that a lot of these posts on here are from the same people who whine and complain about having to work at least one weekend day. Well, I ususally work every weekend and have been happy to do so.

Getting out of MT is impossible. Again, living in a large city and even though I live in a large city, it's not like the public transportation is right outside the door, which people do not understand either. I used to commute to a non-MT job, where I had to drive 40 minutes to meet the commuter train to go into Chicago. That meant my getting up at 4:00 a.m. getting ready, getting my kids up, dressed over to the sitters and being on the road at 5:00 a.m. to catch a train at 6:00 a.m. and at that time, I was paid a whopping 1500 a month -- I paid the mortgage and the major bills and my then husband took care of the rest.

Again, and I am going to reiterate my earlier posts, getting a U-Haul is EXPENSIVE by the time you get boxes lined up etc, trying to find people to help you move, etc, it is cheaper to get a mover to come in and help pack. I hopefully, have found a new place, which is actually nicer and $25 a month cheaper than the current place where I live, however, it is further from the stores. What people don't seem to realize is that here in Miami (and I have lived in Las Vegas as well), is the heat factor. Walking for blocks in either heat and humdidity or desert heat is no fun. I am probably 3 miles from my nearest "supermarket" and have trouble walking to begin with being born with a congenital defect as well as breaking my pelvis.

By no means am I "blaming anyone." I have been in this field for almost 30 years and the only thing that I have not done is be an MTSO and right now, I wouldn't want to; however, what disgusts me, is the fact that I proofread my work, do spell check as well as check punctuation, however, it is up to the QA Gods or Godesses that be." I never ONCE dinged an MT for his/her puncutation, because it really sometimes depends on a person's interpretation.

It is MY situation and if I have to take less dinero and work for a company that I don't feel so stressed over with "demands," then so be it.
can you all give the OP a break and allow a little - venting?
[ In Reply To ..]
Seriously!!! What is wrong with someone just needing to vent their frustration, fear, and sadness? We don't have co-workers sitting next to us that we can talk to about our problems. This is our outlet.

If you don't think that the big MTSOs are killing this profession, then you are not being realistic. It is the large corporations that put this entire country in the financial position that we all, or most, are facing. It was money hungry, wage dropping, bonus receiving corporations that has brought this country to its knees financially. Unfortunately, a lot of us who didn't receive all of those perks that they did are the ones feeling the effects of it the most.

Sounds to me like the OP is doing cut backs and trying to trim her budget to the bone so that she can survive. What would you rather her do, quit all of her jobs and go on government assistance? It is hard to change careers when you are in your 50s. You say go get a different job like it is so easy. Do you not know what the unemployment rates are? Jobs are hard to get everywhere and in any profession.

Give her a break and quit being so darn quick to jump down someone's throat because they are struggling in this business and in their life. It's a darn good thing none of you are taking suicide hotline calls as encouraging and supportive as you all seem to be.

To the OP, I am sorry for your situation and I hope once you get your training out of the way that things turn around for you. Good luck to you and yours. God Bless You and I hope you have a great day! :)

OP, if your expander won't work you need another - Poppy
[ In Reply To ..]
one or another job. I just read this message and that jumped right out. I rely on mine far too heavily for the line counts that pay our bills (husband retired with no pension, plays all day while I work). Seriously, get an expander that does work on EditScript (both Shorthand and InstantText do) and get help converting your dictionaries--or go find another job quick. Don't muck around with AutoCorrect. You aren't planning on building a new dictionary of 20K to ~ entries on that instead of building on what you already have, are you? I understand both programs can be purchased for a very small sum each month.

Regarding a weak hand, your really need to use your expander to assign keys under your good hand to the macros you're provided, as well as to the macros you make yourself.

On the positive side, the fact that you haven't done that as a matter of course and that you just dumped your expander makes me suspect you have lots and lots of potential to use one to speed yourself up, even taking into account a problem hand.

As for minimum production goals for either part-time or full--time...that's a concrete wall you either scale or crash into. If you can't meet them, you can't be an MT any more. But see the paragraph above.
The OP is right about IT. You can't use it with ES9 - Backwards Typist
[ In Reply To ..]
At least where I work. They disabled the option of using other expanders. Heck, can't even use Word's AutoCorrect function. Have to use Escript's functions completely. I don't know what EScription is afraid of but they don't allow IT. When IT is used with it, it screws up the Escription/Word program and makes it harder to get anything done, yet they won't tell you that.

I had thousands of shorts in IT and can't use it. Now having to put phrases in AutoCorrect. It sucks 'cause I keep trying to use my IT marker keys and shorts. Oh, and sometimes ES's AutoCorrect DOESN'T work either. Then I have to check to see if I forgot to put that term in or not; 9 times out of 10, I did but it won't come into the document.

Cut and paste, directly from the thread under which this exchange appears:

"because I am NOT a minority and because I make a certain amount of dinero, I don't qualify for food stamps"

Note the shouting capital letters inserted for emphasis. Within the context, this certainly would appear to be an attempt to make a racially tinged statement about how minorities are allegedly favored over non-minorities (implicit whites) in the food stamps program, a bogus claim that reflects political views founded in racial resentment and not in factual reality.

After your eye exam, you might consider enrolling in racial sensitivity training.

[ In Reply To ..]
In my own experience, I waited too long to make the decision to move on from a situation that wasn't working for me. Many of us have it really good right now, but we've had bad times in the past. We made the decision, sometimes in a timely manner and sometimes we waited too long, to do something about it. That's why you don't get a lot of messages echoing how awful it is that you are going through this. It's healthier to kick into high gear and find something else, even if you have to move or change careers, or both. I know others join me in wishing you the very best. Lots of hugs! Now, go change things.

Okay -- trying to clear the air here - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
I had just gotten off the phone with a fellow MT when I posted this message the other night. She is working for a local hospital at a per diem rate, has a 2-year-old and 9-month-old twins. Her husband works in the food industry and at certain times of the year, works overtime. They are struggling right now like a lot of us are, but she is in an area where there is very little to no daycare available and because of the way her husband's income is "calculated," they do not qualify for any kind of assistance. She has to drive over an hour for her job and is trying to become an at home MT. We both got hired by the same service and it was a nightmare to say the least, on top of the fact that the MTSO only paid monthly. Well, that's fine, if you have another income coming in on a steady basis, but for a lot of us, that is not an option and also, this particular person paid on or about the 5th of the month. Hello? Most my my monthly bills are due around the 1st, including my rent and/or mortgage.

My original "beef/gripe" was one of frustration. After losing a job (as many of you know), applying, testing, interviewing and hopefully getting the job, we have no income coming in during that period of time (at least I didn't because of circumstances). Then, there is setup, training, etc -- another period of time where our wages are way less than we are used to making. Most of us do not have jobs where we get paid time off (or if we do, we have been there for a number of years). People, such as the utiliy companies, landlords and mortgage companies do not understand if something "drastic happens" and your income, that you were comfortable with, suddenly takes a nosedive. Yes, I have been stressed, because for once in my life, I have had to seek help from "outside sources" only to find out that the monies are not there and have been tapped out for several months.

When I made the comment regarding food stamps, it was from "personal observation." I know of a lady, whose S/O makes over $800 a week, however, she qualifies for food stamps. To my knowledge, they are still not married, but he files taxes as "head of household." Another friend of mine has MS -- Her husband works for the State of FL. She has her 30-year-old son living with them who has not contributed a penny toward the food, utilities, rent whatever. He is a "divorced dad" and that whole situation brings my blood pressure up to the boiling point. When I originally moved to Florida, I moved there to help her out during the day when her husband was at work. Although I did not pay rent, I bought their groceries, which were approximately $500 or so every 2 weeks. The "last straw" for me, was when I got done working late, went to the fridge to get something to eat and "deadbeat son" woke up and asked me why I was eating his mother's food. By that time, since I was in a stable relationship, I made the decision to move to Miami, not truly knowing how expensive it was here. I ended up in an "efficiency apartment" and lived there until I found the apartment that I am currently in.

My "beef" with the food stamp situation is in part, due to what I mentioned above. In addition, I would go into Publix or Winn-Dixie the first part of the month and see people getting cash for part of their food stamp benefits. I might have been in the store picking something up that I needed and in and out quickly and would see the same people whom had "cashed in," getting into their luxury SUVs. What a lot of people don't seem to understand is that "the government assistance programs" were designed to be a "temporary situation" and not a situation where you lived off the government for years. I have lived ALL over the country. Los Angeles area, Phoenix, I am originally from close to Chicago, as well as living in Las Vegas for many years. I have seen people that feel they are "entitled" because of their race. They are no more entitled than I am. No, I am not a racist and grew up in a community, thank heavens where everyone was a professional." However, my hometown, has now become a "cheap place to live, alternative to Chicago." I truly think that it is time for people to wake up and realize what is going on with their communities. I saw a post recently on the gab board, where apparently, someone was upset about "trash in the neighbor's yard." They proceeded to make the comment about, "well Section 8." My BFF was on Section 8 for years, her landlord did not fix a basement window to where it would not close. An intruder came in and raped her. She still lives with that trauma.

Bottom line is this is a board, where we vent, come to cry, are frustrated, but instead of being so quick to judge, think about what that other person may be going through.

Sorry for this being long.

Here is what I have to say - in my opinion

[ In Reply To ..]
I agree that there are TOO MANY people on assistance of all forms (Food stamps, section 8, low income housing, medicare, ect.) and I belive that when you said Minorities, you really meant LAZY PEOPLE in general (all races included) and I have no clue why everyone blew this up like they did.

Its okay... there are others who completely understand what you said and feel for you in your situation.

I know that I am tired of struggling while there are people perfectly capable for working that are living in low-income housing, getting food stamps, and have the the tax payers even pay their electric bills, all so they can sleep all day and party all night.

Amen sista...I 100% agree - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I totally understand and agree with what you are both saying.

I, too, have seen people of all races abuse the "system" and consider it a lifestyle. I had never been on government assistance, but this last winter when I lost my job and my husband was laid off due to the weather, we were hurting and couldn't get help either due to his whopping $270.00 week of unemployment. If it hadn't been for my family I don't know how we would have done it. We have 2 kids we support. I just needed help until he could get back to work and I could find something else, which fortunately has happened. Now we are playing catch up on everything and just starting to breath a little easier. And yet, I know people who get their utilities paid, food paid for, and insurance paid for by the government who have a Harley Davidson motorcycle, 2 4-wheelers, dirt bike and 6 vehicles. It is disgusting and disheartening to see this kind of thing go on and it makes my blood boil also.
No, "Where's mine?" is the message I'm seeing - Out of patience Liberal

This from a reportedly skilled worker who apparently sees a parallel between herself and a pair of kids who can't support themselves on 2 jobs but decided to raise some children anyway.

OP, you type and express yourself as if you're able. My suggestion is to give up the poor-me-I'm-so-frustrated-at-the-unfairness-of-it-all thing and the longing for welfare you don't qualify for--yet and go sit down and rack up some moola.

said it all with your "bleeding heart, wear my heart on my sleeve" liberal tag. Why dont YOU pay Michelles trip to Spain and let the rest of us hard workers have some money to spend on the necessities of life? BTW -- I and others refuse to pay for your mortgage or your new car since we have a president now who has NEVER worked a day in his life
so for you it is about race - put lipstick on a pig

You can hide behind whatever rationalizing you'd like to, but your "true" colors (whites only) come through loud and clear.

YOu have a skill, use it. Do like many of us do and work 2 or 3 jobs. Don't hire on with an MTSO who pays once a month, no one held a gun to your head and forced you to do that-- you CHOSE it.

So don't hold US hostage for the rantings of your CHOICES.

Many of us are struggling, but we don't blame people of other colors, attack our president, or even rant and rave about those who qualify for services... we work.

I hear your posts as racist as well.

You made specific reference to minorities in your post. You spent a long time backpedaling, and then you come out with this latest reponse:

"Why dont YOU pay Michelles trip to Spain" (!!)

What is THAT supposed to mean?

We taxpayers have always paid for the trips of the president and first lady - even the white ones.

Yes have paid for Presidential trips in the past; however, to my recollection, none of the recent First Ladies have stayed in a hotel room costing 7,000 to 7,500 a night. That to me, when our country is struggling, just reeks of "arrogance" on behalf of our President and First Lady, when there are many people in this country, who are losing their homes and struggling in other ways.
and if she were white - you would not open your mouth

No need to even argue with that point.

There is nothing racist about resenting the hypocrisy of government officials and their families who preach ''belt tightening'' while they squander public money to finance their own luxury vacations. There is nothing racist about questioning why this first lady needs 12 personal assistants while the 2 previous first ladies both made do with 2 personal assistants. There is nothing racist about objecting to transportation costs alone for Air Force Two for this little jaunt to Spain exceeding $150,000, not to mention the astronomic added security costs for this family and ''40 close friends'', then back home again so we can enjoy another vacation, number 9, to the Florida Gulf and last week, number 10, back to Martha's Vineyard!----and all this at a time of record unemployment and people losing their homes in record numbers. This has not one thing to do with race but everything to do with taxpayers' financing of a Marie-Antoinette extravagant lifestyle. The total public tab for this vacation #8 to Spain exceeded $600,000--and that's IF we buy the line that all the hotel accommodations, meals, the closing of a public beach, etc. were all paid for out of her own pocket--yeah, okay, right!! But the transportation and security costs alone exceed $600,000---All on the taxpayers' dime and people should NOT object to this?!People like yourself who hurl false charges of racism do much harm to those who DO experience racial discrimination and have legitimate complaints. Stop with the blind hero-worship and try using your brain instead of ''crying wolf''.
I support what you say and you are absolutely - correct...sm

We should all be outraged by this and the excessive and wasteful government spending by the entire political parties past and present regardless of race or what party they are affiliated with.
I believe your facts are wrong and I am - not a hero worshipper

The presidents pay for their own vacations. As far as how many assistants they have, I believe your information there is incorrect also. These are the kinds of things people on the "other side" always spread about any president and/or First Lady. The facts tell a different story. I don't have a political hero, but it's annoying to have false stories/rumors like these spread.

I'm a little confused about exactly what you are getting at in the first part of your message. Skilled workers can lose their jobs and temporarily go through a hard time also. And I'm not sure where the pair of kids who can't make it on 2 jobs parallel came in, but it wasn't from me.

But, usually if a couple has 2 jobs between them and are raising 2 kids and are struggling financially they can't get any help. That is what I have a problem with. People who don't work, don't even attempt to work, or lie about how much they make on their taxes so that they can qualify for government assistance is what I am referring to.

The people that I was referring to in my post about having 6 vehicles, 2 4-wheelers etc. make a very good living, but he is self-employed and she doesn't work, and they have 5 kids. They know how much they can show on paper that they make so that they are just under it in order to qualify for food stamps, utilities being paid, and Medicaid. Yes, that is sickening to see things like this and you and your spouse work hard and struggle despite your efforts.

Am I proud that somehow we make it on our own, yes I am...but, it isn't about pride when something unexpected happens to you financially and you worry about how you are going to feed your kids. Pride goes out the window. I had to swallow mine this winter and ask my family for help, but I have paid them back. I don't want a handout. I have paid into the "system" and helped to support others since I was 16 years old and have never lived off it. I don't call that a handout.

So, in your opinion exactly who does deserve the assistance? Someone who has worked for the last 26 years and never gone on assistance, but needs a little help for a month or 2, or someone who doesn't/hasn't paid into the system and has made living off of it a lifestyle?

It is not a matter of "longing for welfare" as you so quaintly put it. It is a matter of what is right and what is wrong. I would much rather help someone who is trying to help themselves and at least tries, than to help someone who doesn't give a crap and just wants everything for free. Who would you rather help?

Think about Octomom -- we are supporting her. We are supporting every inmate on death row, to the tune of $250 a day or more. Charle Manson being on death row since 1969 -- it is now 2010 and the others whom have commited horrendous crimes. We the taxpayers sent the First Lady to Spain where she spent 3-4 nights in a hotel room to the tune of $7K a night - this administration has spent more in personal travel than any administration in my lifetime. No -- this is NOT a political post -- it is a post to hopefully wake a few people up. Where were the other countries when we had Katrina -- BTW -- five years ago today. Where have the Allies been when something has happened here? -- Nowhere basically. Do you truly think they cared about what happened in NYC? -- No, they were on their own alerts and as a military widow, I was VERY aware that 9/11 was going to happen, the heretofores were when and where. It was not "the administration at that time," but a combination that had come MANY years down the road. Just as the situation today. We have had "entities" basically sticking their nose in where it does not belong. Most people need to stop and realize that our current First Lady was CEO of HCA, one of the largest healthcare providers in the country. I wonder at times if her "push for healthcare reform" is to only fatten her own finances. I guess, as an American, I want to see the change that needs to be forthcoming. Getting the families that have been on welfare for years, driving their expensive SUVs, wearing gold chains and dealing drugs, but yet living at the expense of the taxpayers, while those of us, who work, pay our taxes and are law abiding citizens suffer.

Help from other countries after Katrina - was turned down

[ In Reply To ..]
There were plenty of other countries offering aide after Katrina. They were turned away by our OWN government who said their help wasn't needed. (PS: who was president then? Can't blame the current administration for that).

I really have lost track of what you are trying to say. You started off complaining about the MT industry and now are just complaining about the world in general, I guess. If you think you're "waking up" anybody with these all-over-the-place posts, I doubt it. You seem to think venting on a forum is going to change something. It never does.

Michelle, you have burned so many bridges with so many people. Your drinking is getting in the way of everything you are going through. I am sorry, but if it walks like a duck.......You have thrown alcohol related tantrums, harassed people and even worked under the influence. I am sorry, Michelle, I do not feel sorry for you. You complain about and blames everyone and everything for your problems. I suggest you enter a rehab facility and get treatment and help. If you do not, then nothing will go right in your life.

What Successful MTs Are Saying To Each Other When You Aren't Around
Jun 28, 2012

The "When You Aren't Around" part is just to get your attention. I know that many of you are also successful MTs. There are many others who believe they are and will argue until the cows come home to convince us that they are, when they aren't. Most successful MTs have seen the ones I'm talking about. I've been a successful MT for years. Throughout the years I've known a lot of MTs, some managing to get jobs and somehow keep them because of connections or friendships, o ...

An MT Supervisor Told Me (Regarding MTs Who Aren't Doing Well)
Mar 12, 2010

An MT supervisor told me that when they aren't happy with an MT's work because they aren't following instructions or are getting sloppy, they just take them off the schedule. Sometimes they do it gradually and other times leave them with little or no work. They keep the work for the MTs who are doing the best job with the least fuss. Interesting. ...

Hope There Aren't Any San Fran MT's Out There!
Nov 05, 2014

San Francisco voters approved a bill to raise the minimum wage to $15 yesterday!  I hope no Nuance MT's live there (HA! Like a Nuance MT could afford to live in the most expensive city in the US).  At the current line rates for editing, they'd have to produce over 375 LPH to not have make-up-pay!  I don't know for certain that Nuance has a federal contract, but assuming they do for their Dragon software (or speech recognition software, period), I wonder wonder if N ...

All The Things We Do That Aren't Production

Here's the thing that gets me.  We have a punch in for production or continuing education, but what about all the general stuff we do that we either have to do on our own time, or if we do punch in, it will go against our production rate.  And it may be that it is just a small amount of time everyday, but the fact is the salary people don't have to read their emails or maintain their computer systems on their own time.  We have our Quality person who is maintaining a boo ...

How Would You Explain Why You Aren't Working At This Time?
Aug 30, 2013

I was terminated in March and now I cannot find a job. I have been working for 31 years, and this past account was a disaster. Dictator Ranting About How His Stats Aren't Typed
Nov 30, 2013

I just had a dictator rant to me about how none of his stat reports are being typed in an urgent fashion. The thing is, he only dictates that they are stat reports, saying "this is a priority report" on his dictations, but never marks the reports themselves as stats so they end up being distributed as regular dictations. It looks like someone wasn't paying attention in training. He must think we all have telepathy and know what is dictated in a report before even getting them. ...
