There is hope out there after all - Happy MT again

Got fired from MModal two weeks ago after 12 years with them for not making quite the minimum wage for my state (one of the highest). I was devastated as only needed to hang on for 2 more years before retirement age and afraid I would not get another MT job after being fired for the first time in my life, but also a little relieved as I knew it would force me to find something that pays better, MT or non-MT.

I took my daughter and baby to their pediatrician appointment a week ago Friday and got to talking to the receptionist. Turns out one of their 2 MTs is retiring at the end of the year and they have just started looking for a replacement, not even advertised yet. I filled out an application and then met with the 3 pediatricians in the office last Wednesday and tested for them, and got a chance to explain my situation with MModal...and this past Friday I got hired at $17 an hour to start, full time. The benefits package is not great, but I am certainly not complaining. I start the second week of December to get up to speed before the other MT leaves at the end of December. Lucky for me the MTs they have used in the past as vacation/sick relief for the other two, one was not interested in working full time and the other they did not want to hire full time.

I asked why they had not gone with a service when it seems a lot of offices have gone that route, and they said these two MTs have been with them for over 15 years and are like family, and they feel it is more efficient to have MTs in the office who are familiar with their style and how they like things to be done. From what I gather, they are somewhat picky and also the MTs help out with other office stuff when needed.

Anyway, to all out there struggling with MModal I wanted to show there is hope and perhaps you can start asking around at local doctor offices as many do not advertise when they have an opening.

let go, but I did apply for a job at a local clinic. I would have switched for the same money just to get out of MM, but when they said $17 per hour (almost apologetically I might add --- their previous MT had been there 25 years and no telling what she had been making), I about cried. Been there 6 months and happy, happy, happy. Not bragging, I just come here occasionally to tell everyone that there is a chance and to keep on applying!!! Good luck everybody :)

I am so happy for you. Wish I could say the same for myself, but no... Have recently moved and had to get a new doctor. My new doctor, who seemed like a cute little twirp to me (because of my age) was typing as fast as she could while I spoke. She said it was just as easy for her to type it herself. Some of these new young doctors have been around computers all their lives and are good at this. No need for transcriptionists at this office!

You might find this odd but I mentioned your post to my husband - when it happened. sm

I told him that I felt bad for the MTs that had worked long and hard and right before the holiday season be let go for what is probably a shim-sham reason.

I then got to report your new good news. It just goes to show that when one door closes, another one surely does open.

I am still in shock and wondering why I did not get off my butt and start looking for this kind of position back when ASR first took over my Medquist/MModal accounts. ASR was my downfall and they made me feel so inadequate that I just could not "get it" and do enough lines to make up enough of the difference in pay, thought is was because this old dog could not learn new things anymore.

The one thing that impressed these doctors was my typing speed...straight typing a few reports never felt so good and I had almost forgotten what it was like, and I did not even have use of my expansions during the testing!

MModal will not give me access to my expansions and I don't know where to look on their computer (have not sent it back yet as no labels) to see if I can get them off it. If anyone knows how to get my most recent expansion list, please let me know. Hate the thought of starting over building an expansion list.

So... I've been at Medquist for about 6 months - I was a new grad so I only make 0.05 a line (I know, I know, save your comments about that people!). I actually have really good accounts so I never make less than $12 an hour so at least I'm not making minimum wage. I am now an ex-Nuance employee and happy to be so. I have found a company (actually 2) that has work available, doesn't demand 4-hour TAT and let's me work the hours I choose without committing to a schedule as long as I do XX number of lines on the days I says I will work. The work I have had thus far has been, for the most part, good dictators, and the QA I have received has been very helpful, not punitive or downright mean, and my pay is punished by it! Further down the board regarding TAA someone said they filled out an application online regarding the TAA benefits, and then made an appointment to talk with someone about the situation. The biggest irony and the best thing we can wish for is that Webmedx gets eat up by Medquist and they lose everything! I was a QA and the editing on those accounts, especially on MModal was ATROCIOUS. Everytime you went to a new report you had to reset audio. EVERY TIME. Their software is the pits. Recently, one of our local hospitals opened up 4 full time jobs to QA the work they are getting from their vendor. It seems the doctors were complaining about the quality of their reports. My hope is that other hospitals as well will see that you get what you pay for and that the lower rates they are demanding followed by the lower rates paid to qualified MTs working for companies like MQ results in the loss of the most qualified MTs and inferior work being produced by less qualified ...

I put in my resignation from Nuance yesterday :o) I just wanted to share a glimmer of hope with you all. There is a much better life out there beyond Nuance.
