what are the pros/cons of being paid by the hour - pamt

I am a newer mt and was just wondering what are the pros and cons of being paid by the hour versus by the line?
TIA
I would think that one of the pros would be (sm) - anon

just not having to worry about making a line count every day. However, if this is the job that is paying $11.00 per hour as an independent contractor, I think that the con would be that by the time you pay your own taxes it would be the equivalent to $9.00 an hour or less, in my opinion.
IF you're paid by the hour, I'd bet there's a minimum line count to make. - SM

I sure wouldn't pay an IC a wage of $11/hr to only have them do 100 LPH, unless it was the worst dictator on the account.
I used to make $23.50/hour, and our minimum was - 110 transcribed minutes per day. n/m

is that no matter how slow you are, you're paid the same amount of money.
Major con is no matter how fast you are, you're only paid per hour.
Hourly MTs in my area make from $13 to $18/hr. I transcribe about 300 lph, earning about $27/hr, sometimes I transcribe faster.
For a new MT I think per hour would be a huge plus.
Thanks everyone - pamt

Thanks everyone for your input/suggestions. I am a new MT with about one years experience and not looking for a full income but some extra money. I was thinking it wouldn't be that bad to be paid by the hour being as I may be slower as experienced MT's. Lots to think about. Thanks!
Hourly rate when first beginning would be awesome - MTonamission

when first learning new accounts, as often your hourly rate can fall below minimum wage. Of course, that completely depends on the type of account, type of dictators, repetition, use of expanders and macros, etc.
After 10 years of being paid by the line, I am quite excited to have an interview next week with a doctor's office where I will be paid an actually salary plus insurance - medical, dental, vision AND a 401K. Not only a salary and benefits, but STRAIGHT typing, no VR! Even if they change my job and GO to VR I won't have to panic because my salary will stay the same.
The job I'm at currently, and have been with the past decade, has recently switched me to a VR account and my pay has significantly dropped, probably 30%, plus I have ZERO benefits and we consistently run out of work. At this point in my life I'm tired of the struggle, my child is now grown, and a benefits package and a guaranteed salary every 2 weeks sounds fantastic to me. This struggling every week to get work, get paid peanuts for VR, and NEVER have a decent check is for the birds and those who don't need to be the breadwinner.
If the hourly rate is decent, I'd go for it. In these times, it's rare for an MT to make decent money unless you have only a couple of accounts, lots of repetition, and a platform that doesn't require a bunch of fields be completed and searched out (free, of course, for the MTSO) by the MT. This, for me anyway, is a very time consuming task in my current platform for which I am NOT paid and thus another reason my pay stinks so bad.
When I made great money at MTing I had two accounts, continual work, I knew all the doctors well, only a couple of ESLs, could use lots of auto corrects and macros, and, of course, it was straight typing. Now I do VR editing, have multiple (probably 7) accounts that require about 60% editing each plus more time trying to populate fields than I do editing the reports (and not paid for populating these fields).
Good luck to you!!
I worked on an hourly account, but the only - reason we were

offered hourly was because the dictators were so bad. It was bad enough we only had to get 800 lines per day for VR or straight transcription. I would just make sure if it is with a large MTSO and not a local business that difficult dictators is not why they are offering hourly.

I am really fast and experienced and make $32 an hour on an average. No MTSO is going to pay me that. I would not work by the hour, can make much more by the line.
So I'm a bit stuck and not sure which way would be best... hoping you all can help.
Putting aside cost and time to complete, what are some other pros and cons of going for CPC/CCS first instead of an RHIA and vice versa? ...
being a prn employee? I have an upcoming interview at a hospital for an MT job. The job is not through a staffing/employment agency. Who ever gets the job will be an actual hospital employee but will not get any benefits (one disadvantage). I wonder how it works when you want to take vacation (how much notice needs to be given) or if you have to give a two-week notice when you quit. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! ...
Or hypothetically speaking if you are a QA who works on Dictaphone EXEditor, paid $16 per hour, full-time with potential for overtime most weeks. I have been with this company for 6 years. Love it. Great management/office staff. I have been offered a QA position, but want to know opinions from fellow QAers before accepting what you like or dislike about QAing, the work itself.
Is this a good gig? ...
Hey does anyone know of any pros/cons to DIT transcription? Got an e-mail that they want to take their test but not sure about it. I have been burned a few times from other places and don't want to fall into another trap....and not get my money.
Thanks! ...
I read some minor cons, some minor pros. I'm getting the feeling since the company is not being bashed heavily, that there are MTs who are surviving working for them.
Content people- What do you like about it?
Discontented people - What do you find lacking?
Request: Please don't turn this into an argument with each other because you disagree with another poster's experience. Just tell me YOUR experience, pretty please? ...
I have read so many pros and cons. Running out of work (that's a problem I have right now). I would love to hear from those who have been at SoftScript for longer than just a few months-maybe a year or more. Are you still happy? Do you still have work everyday? I can't take much more working till midnight just to get enough lines in and time in to pay my bills. I just want to do my job in a decent time frame and get some sleep. There's no such thing as a perfect company-they all h ...
I am thinking of switching over to Nuance and would appreciate any and all advise I can get. Please let me know your experiences both good and bad. Hate starting w/someone new. Thanks. ...
I was wondering if I could get some input on working for Nuance. Are they trustworthy? Do you run out of work? How is the platform Dicatphone Extext? Currently work for MModal and trying to decide if this would be a good change or bad.
Thanks for your help!

I used to work for Medquist for about 15 years or so...I left the company in 1995. Can anytime tell me how they have changed...pay rates, etc. Do you have to work as employee or IC? Need equipment? I need all the information I can get is someone would be so kind as to fill me in. What type of platform do they use? Thanks in advance. ...
Do you think, with the current state of affairs with the MT industry, that it would be worth trying to start a transcription company? I'm torn. The only reason I would want to start a transcription company is to try to make what I use to make. I don't love being an MT, at least not anymore. In fact, I am growing to despise it. The thing is, I am a damn good MT, not that you would know it from looking at my paychecks since the big switch to VR and downgrade ...
I am getting a new computer with Windows 7 and would like to know what word expander programs a person would find simple, minimal learning curve, pros and cons and what is out there. I have always used autocorrect, but feel with a MT expander would increase my production better. Any advice, what to stay away from and what do you like about it or not? ...
Would like to hear pros and cons of the Medrite platform. Have not heard of this one before, so anything you have to say about it would be appreciated. Thank you. ...
Line requirement per hour? If subcontractor, what is pay per line? If employee, how are benefits, 401K? What is QA penalty and quality expectation? Thanks so much. ...
There is a local position here in town for $15 an hour doing medical transcription. It's with an individual office. Maybe too good to be true? I'm working for an MTSO right now and will be switched over to editing soon. A pay-by-the-hour job sounds great, but I'm wondering about the drawbacks... ...
