paid by the hour? - iggy

There is a local position here in town for $15 an hour doing medical transcription. It's with an individual office. Maybe too good to be true? I'm working for an MTSO right now and will be switched over to editing soon. A pay-by-the-hour job sounds great, but I'm wondering about the drawbacks...

I would take paid by the hour anytime. Depending on who you work for, VR editing usually pays half of regular transcription and a lot of times you work just as hard if not harder at editing.

I get paid by the hour and the benefits outweigh the cons in my opinion.

If I have a bad day with bad dictators, doesn't matter. I still get paid. Flip side, even if I made 8 cents a line, I'd still make almost double what I make working by the hour.

There's always work and when there isn't they just give you busy work to do until there's more. Flip side...there's ALWAYS work lol

With the way this profession is going, I realize that I'm beyond lucky to have a paid by the hour job at the hospital and then I do per diem work at a clinic, which is also paid by the hour for $2.00 less an hour but still good money.

Also, with working for the same place all the time, you really get to know your doctors/PA/CRNPs so that even the "bad" doctors are doable.

DO IT!!! That's what I made working for a cardiology clinic FROM HOME and stupid me...I left it because I thought the grass was greener elsewhere. The only real drawback was that when there was no work, we had to clock out and use PTO time if we wanted a full paycheck. That's just because I worked at home. The girls in the office could clean or do filing or whatever and still get paid. Now I work in a hospital for five bucks an hour less than that and have to bust my rear for incentive pay to even be able to buy food and pay bills. Not to mention driving an hour each way to the hospital. (this was not the job that I left for by the way).

In my state, there are supposed to be 2 paid 15-minute breaks if one works 8 hours. I've been an MT for over 5 years and have always been paid by the line. I would think that most MTs preferred wage is to be paid a set amount per hour. If this were not an option, what has given you more of an income, paid by the line or by the AUDIO hour? My transcription job was always paid by the hour. I was laid off and they recently offered me a temp position with them making $12.00 an hour. I was also offered a positon that pays 7.5 and 3.5 cpl. I need to find a job that averages more than $10 an hour. I have 20 years' experience in med trans and am a fast typist, but with the slow platforms and the constant "breakdowns" and being out of work, I am only averaging $10 an hour. I've been doing MT forEVER. Today I pushed the envelope as hard as I could and I transcribed 734 lines in one hour. I was totally "on," dictators were great, and being in the zone helps. I doubt I will ever replicate it, my hands are still trembly! LOL! But I wanted to see what I could do. First of all quality comes before quantity, but I also have so many different physicians that it seems impossible to increase my line count. This is what I made yesterday. It seems to depend on the day. I had so many reports that had big chunks of sentences missing. Of course, as always, all medicine lists, the numbers were wrong, a few drugs spelled wrong. Vital signs wrong. Lab counts wrong. Somebody somewhere got paid big bucks to devise some cockamamie formula for what they think we should achieve, lines per hour, etc, which doesn't work, does it, because every account is different, some weighted heavily toward editing and others toward transcription, some heavy ESL, others not. I'm looking at a job that pays 50-55 dollars per recorded hour of audio. This is interview or straight dictation transcription. Does this sound okay?
