Nuance Pros and Cons - Salliemae

Posted: Feb 25, 2012

I read some minor cons, some minor pros.  I'm getting the feeling since the company is not being bashed heavily, that there are MTs who are surviving working for them.   Content people- What do you like about it? Discontented people - What do you find lacking? Request:  Please don't turn this into an argument with each other because you disagree with another poster's experience.  Just tell me YOUR experience, pretty please?

Nuance in 2012 - Deb

I'd like to know what Nuance is like these days too. I worked there 3 years ago and loved my main account but was really frustated over being on multiple accounts with 40 pages of account specifics that were constantly changing. Is it still the same? I started off at 4 cent and 8 cents..has that changed? Thanks.

I currently work for Nuance. One thing that is still the same is that the account specifics are constantly changing, at least for the two accounts I have. Yes, the pay is still 4/8 cpl for edited/typed lines.

My main complaint isn't necessarily related to one thing, but the industry as a whole: I have seen so many mistakes and blanks in reports, it makes me want to cry. People are going through so fast through reports because of the low pay so they can make enough money to live on. And it seems that these companies don't care, and neither do the medical facilities/doctors. It doesn't really matter what company you work for - it's all the same; and the supervisors act all stunned and surprised at the things they see. WAKE UP PEOPLE. It's become quantity for the sake of quality, plain and simple.

I like working for Nuance very much. I have had the same account for nearly 4 years and I am very comfortable with it. Great incentive plan and very flexible. Have a great team leader. Can't say anything bad about them.

I have been at Nuance for almost 3 months. I have no complaints and quite happy so far. I have a great supervisor and account. I like the platform and the fact they leave me alone and let me work.

Nuance - not a positive experience for me - Former focus

I've talked about my experience with them before, so this may bore some of you. My experience is now coming up on two years ago, so things MAY have changed, but I doubt it.

Let me start off by saying Nuance (and MModal and Transcend) are big enough that there HAVE to be employees there who are making enough to have a good life.

I had a number of issues with the first team leader I was assigned to and was switched to another one who promised that the account I was on never ran out of work. My first two Saturdays I ran out of work. No matter what the recruiter tells you about having "a mix of voice recognition and typing" you will be doing 99% voice recognition. The draft percentage that they use is about 75% accuracy - which means you are correcting 25% of the document for 4 cpl. I didn't even make minimum wage. My first go-round with the training team was only so-so. They had a new trainer and he wasn't that good, so my first week was really quite a loss. I asked for and received more training which was quite helpful. The IT department is great and very responsive, but I had to deal with them a LOT because of various issues.

I had one psychiatrist who was an ESL who dictated in a whisper in the corner of the unit where there were all kinds of beeps, etc. I did the best I could and made notes on the responses I got back from QA, but the kicker was when I was reminded yet again that I could go look up old reports of his and read what he had said in the past. Huh. For 4 cpl, I rather think you all can get on the horn to the doctor and tell him to speak the freak up, thank you very much. There was another comment made that I needed to double check the doctors when they dictated medication dosages. Double check the MD? Again, for 4 cpl. Thanks, but no thanks. I tried for 2.5 months to make it work and ended up in a big enough hole that I came closer to losing my house than I ever want to be again.

Other people's experience will vary widely, but this was mine.

I have worked with Nuance since November and I am really enjoying it. It took some time to get everything going though. For a while I did not have a steady work flow because the account I was on was new to the company and they were still straightening things out.

I have a pretty good workflow now and they slowly introduce new accounts so you're not bombarded with so many different instructions. They are very helpful and even allowed me to work daytime hours (I work night shift) when I wasn't getting work at night to make up for my hours I was losing.

Besides taking a while to get a good workflow I really do not have any complaints. The scheduling is flexible and there are incentives once you reach 120 days that the more lines you produce/higher quality gets you paid extra. This is the only company I have worked for so everywhere might have that, idk, but I think it is a great company!

I have worked for Nuance for a little over a year. Everyone is very nice. I have had 3 different team leads in that time, but they have all been great. The only problem I have had is that my account has a large amount of ESLs and I'm not the best with them so that slows my production down a little, but that is my fault and not the company's.

my opinion. - worksthere

I've only been with them for over 2 months, but I have 30+ years experience. I like that they do leave you alone to work. I have never done editing so this is all new to me. Yes, the pay sucks and I agree with the above poster about all this looking up sample reports, etc. For 4 cpl? If these companies would realize the quality of work would improve IF they would pay a decent wage. I also was told my account was 50/50. HA! It's more like 98% editing. I'm making way less money than I ever have.

I'm not quitting because these companies are all the same. Finding a job outside the house won't pay much better after you figure in gas, clothes, etc.

The people at Nuance that I have dealt with have been very nice to me. Like I said, I've had trouble with the editing and those dates on the headers - OMG. I asked a QA about 1 the other night and she didn't know the answer. After 1 month of this, they stuck me back on pending. I check my work every day, have been averaging a B but still on pending. My 90 days are up in 3 weeks. Waiting to see if I still have a job or not. I do my best, I'm not slacking, I do need a job, so we'll see.

Still hoping for a change... - Anonalso

I have been working with Nuance since July. I have been reading some of the positive replies your post and find myself hoping I can switch to their accounts. I am now on three accounts and each of my supervisors are totally incompetent. I honestly don't know how they keep their job. My newest account that I started last week took almost two weeks for me to get trained on because the supervisor seemed to have short-term memory loss. The first night she was to train me, she wrote to me telling me she was going to call me at 10 p.m. to go over the account specs personally. After I didn't not receive her call after about an hour I looked in my email only to find a nasty email from her telling me she was disappointed that I did not join her conference training session that she had sent me an email for...which she didn't. I forwarded her the email she had sent me and she had no response, but to reschdule another training meeting for the next night....which she did the same exact thing!!! As for QA, I really which I knew what school they went to so I can tell people to stay away from it. I was recently audited and got a 96% percentage and was put back on 100% QA and probation. I looked at the reports that were audited and could not believe the mistakes that the QA person made in a report with my name on it!!! I immediately informed my supervisor who then reviewed my audit report and reversed the 100% review, but really? This person removed the correct sentences I had typed and created ones that made no sense at all as well as other obviously incorrect "corrections".

So far, this has been my experience with Nuance. Needless to say, I am looking for another company to work for.

PROS Versus CONS...Is It Worth It?
Nov 09, 2010

Do you think, with the current state of affairs with the MT industry, that it would be worth trying to start a transcription company?  I'm torn.  The only reason I would want to start a transcription company is to try to make what I use to make.  I don't love being an MT, at least not anymore.  In fact, I am growing to despise it.  The thing is, I am a damn good MT, not that you would know it from looking at my paychecks since the big switch to VR and downgrade ...

Seeking Advice From The Pros
Feb 03, 2013

I'm planning on getting out of the at-home MT industry and will be seeking employment doing other jobs but in an office. The problem I'm facing is switching back to the original rectangular keyboard (carpal tunnel, here I come) once again. I've been using the Microsoft Natural Multimedia split keyboard since November 2004, and despite several attempts to revert back to the original style, I quit in frustration within 10 minutes. My fingers cannot find the keys. I cannot even u ...
