Pros and cons of IC versus employee ?? - Any advice appreciated!

I work full-time IC for a small company and part-time for a larger company (IC).

One job pays me what an IC should be paid, the other one not so much. But I love both companies.

Positives for me: More money, flexibility, you get to choose your schedule, work the Holidays you WANT to work, don't have to worry about conflicting appointments - If I need off to go to the doctor I just email them and tell them I have a Dr. Appt and let them know what time I'll be back on that day if it happens to fall on a day I agreed to work.

My full-time company I literally work when I want and my part-time company wants an idea of when I will be working i.e. what days of the week, mornings? Afternoons? Evenings? They are a little more demanding (if you will) but yet really flexible in the sense that they know they cant tie me to a set schedule, but ask for more communication than my other job. As long as I am productive and put in my time, both jobs are really reasonable.

Negatives: Negatives are really only negatives if you need the benefits. You don't get insurance (I have my own), you have to pay your own taxes quarterly, no paid vacation, sick-time. I don't mind the no paid vacation. If I need a couple days off I usually can afford to take them and I let them know ahead of time. So far, I haven't gotten sick and needed to be off for any extended period of time so that's good. Also, no unemployment benefits if you get fired or work runs low.

I personally do my best to do a good job with quality and production so they have no reason to want to get rid of me. And between the 2 I don't have much of a problem running low on work.

So no benefits, pay your own taxes and no unemployment are the negatives.

Do you think, with the current state of affairs with the MT industry, that it would be worth trying to start a transcription company? I'm torn. being a prn employee? I have an upcoming interview at a hospital for an MT job. The job is not through a staffing/employment agency. Who ever gets the job will be an actual hospital employee but will not get any benefits (one disadvantage). I wonder how it works when you want to take vacation (how much notice needs to be given) or if you have to give a two-week notice when you quit. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! ...

This post is not what you probably thought it was going to be. I am not going to list the pros and cons of being an IC or am employee. It appears that MTSOs are "fudging" on these two classifications of workers to get the advantages. For example, as an IC you make your own hours.
