Can anybody tell me pros and cons to - anon

being a prn employee? I have an upcoming interview at a hospital for an MT job. The job is not through a staffing/employment agency. Who ever gets the job will be an actual hospital employee but will not get any benefits (one disadvantage). I wonder how it works when you want to take vacation (how much notice needs to be given) or if you have to give a two-week notice when you quit. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Might get the right answers from their HR dept. - logical reason would lead one to believe... nm

prn as an employee and could help me out before I interview. Thanks for the smarta$$ answer. Always appreciated. (Insert huge eye roll.)

I started out PRN at the hospital I used to work for - before outsourced - SM

It was my first MT job right out of school almost 15 years ago and I was hired p.r.n. Every employer may be different, but for me, I got my schedule every pay-period and started out working 3 days a week and gave sufficient notice, like 2 weeks or so whenever I wanted off for something. I didn't get benefits and cant recall if I got PTO but it pretty much worked just like an employee and I eventually moved to part-time status with a consistent scheduled days and times where as before, my hours fluctuated between 12pm to 8pm, 8am to 4:30, 10am to 6pm etc. After about 2 years I then became full-time when an opening came available and worked there up until about 3 years ago when they outsourced.

Getting in p.r.n. is a good way to get your foot in the door and gain other job opportunities within the hospital so go for it. I wish you luck.
Thank you very much for your helpful answer! :-) - nm

How in the world could anyone on here know the - hiring terms for that position SM

in order to give you the correct answers?

Doesn't make sense to ask a question like that. You could get a dozen answers on here from different people and get that position only to find out the terms are completely different than you expect.

about how PRN works to get a general idea of things. It may vary from facility to facility, but I suspect there are common aspects to it. She can ask more specific questions at the interview (HR). It's never a bad idea to gather information before an interview so you know what questions to ask. If she doesn't like the terms given and gets the job, she can always turn it down. Why go into an interview ignorant? Duh?

Some pros and cons - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Pros:

1. It is a job. If you are applying, you must need one, so getting it would be good, right?

2. If you are prn, you will often have first shot at a full-time position.

3. It makes you an employee, so you may be able to apply for positions not available to the general public.

4. If it is at a hospital, you will be exposed to managers in HIM, so you can start working on ways to move out of MT. They can advise and recommend.

Cons:

1. In a prn position, they look closely at your performance, attitude, work ethics, appearance, and everything else, because prn positions are often used as trial periods. It is much easier to simply not bring prn folks back in to work when they disappoint than it is to fire a regular employee.

2. It may be irregular or sporadic.

3. Typically, there are no provisions for vacation, sick leave, etc. It is prn ... either you are available or they bring in someone else who is.

4. To get rid of you, they don't have to fire you. They just don't call you in.

HR will advise you on the terms of employment, from vacations to quitting. I would not press either issue. Don't communicate that you are doing them a favor, because you aren't. Wait for them to tell you.

If you need a job, you should want this job. You should want this job more than you want a vacation. You should also have such good manners that you would give appropriate notice no matter what they required.

Thanks for the advice. - sm

I sort of want the job, but there are reasons why I don't want it. It's not that a vacation is more important than a job; I understand what you're saying in that regard. My family lives in several different states, and I have not seen any of them in two years (because I did not get to use my vacation time at my last job of two years). A relative in another state is getting married in several months, and I know I will need time off for that. It's not that I don't have manners regarding giving an appropriate notice. I guess I should've elaborated. This is not my dream job and, as stated, there are reasons why I don't want it, so I will continue to look for a job if I do get this one. If I am prn and they can tell me they no longer need me without any notice, I feel I should be able to quit without notice if I find another job since I am only prn. Anyway, thanks for your input. It is appreciated.

If you do not need or want the job, why apply?? - nm

There's a difference between NEED and WANT. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I WANT a PT job, so I'm interviewing to see if this is a job I want. I'm not crazy about it being prn because no matter how good of an employee I am, when they no longer need me, I'm back to job hunting, which I hate. I'm not in a position that I have to take whatever is offered. Hope that clarifies.

PROS Versus CONS...Is It Worth It?
Nov 09, 2010

Do you think, with the current state of affairs with the MT industry, that it would be worth trying to start a transcription company?  I'm torn.  The only reason I would want to start a transcription company is to try to make what I use to make.  I don't love being an MT, at least not anymore.  In fact, I am growing to despise it.  The thing is, I am a damn good MT, not that you would know it from looking at my paychecks since the big switch to VR and downgrade ...

Seeking Advice From The Pros
Feb 03, 2013

I'm planning on getting out of the at-home MT industry and will be seeking employment doing other jobs but in an office. The problem I'm facing is switching back to the original rectangular keyboard (carpal tunnel, here I come) once again. I've been using the Microsoft Natural Multimedia split keyboard since November 2004, and despite several attempts to revert back to the original style, I quit in frustration within 10 minutes. My fingers cannot find the keys. I cannot even u ...
