New graduate - Experience in transcription is experience - angie

Posted: Nov 11, 2009

I am a new graduate and need to find a job! I am also new to this site. I got the site info from a friend that has been doing transcription work for many years. She has given me some leads, but as of now, nothing! It appears that most of these companies wnat 2 or more years experience. Does anyone know how I can start and get some experience? I suppose in anything and not just medical. Experience in transcription is experience, right?

experience - what

Experience in transcription is experience, right? Not exactly. Medical transcription is a totally different thing and takes quite a few years to get to know the language and the words and not have to look stuff up a lot.

What school did you graduate from? Did they not have any help to give you? Did you see the new subject on the left column about job openings? I noticed a few that would take newbies. They may not have an opening now, but maybe in the future.

HOPE! - still learning

Call all your local regional hospitals and ask to speak with Career Specialists... Tell them what training you have and ask if they have people in their HIM/Transcription departments that would consider taking a newbie in for an internship. Especially target teaching hospitals.

There are several advantages to this route:

1. A hospital is likely to be honest and upfront about wages, as opposed to some transcription services who offer "unpaid internships" which amount to getting their work done for free at your expense. Be clear with the hospital that you are looking for a standard paid/working internship. (Learning on the job)

2. Some hospitals have very long-term employees who love their work and love to share their experience/knowledge...are passionate about what they are doing. Working in the department with this sort of people can be a gold-mine of comprehension for the profession to draw from.

My first "internship" (via internet, at home, unpaid) turned out to be a rip-off. I reluctantly turned to a local hospital and started over with the whole internship experience, but I was in for a pleasant surprise. There ARE still some wonderful people left in this world!

Take heart!

Graduate W/some Experience
Jan 23, 2012

I am posting because I have spent the past few days reading so many negative things on this board and a few positive things, but am very discouraged about MTing.  My position is that I have graduated from a school (Career Step) that is accredited and one of the "top 3" I BELIEVE, but am not really sure now (can anyone tell me who those "3" are?). I graduated, but not with honors or high honors, Within one month, I got a wonderful job right out of the  ...

No Transcription Experience
May 25, 2010

After a few days of arguing back and forth with my CCM about feedback issues, audit keeping me from earning full pay, inconsistencies, I finally had a conference call with CCM and QA sup as well.  I was angry, admittedly, wanted and was demaning to be taken off 100% for silly "critical feedbacks" (doctor clearly says "if" and you typed "is" CRITICAL FEEDBACK???.)   Asked how in the world us MTs can be faulted for cruddy ASR and/or dictator problems! (no answer)  Asked if eith ...

Has Anyone Had Experience Doing Any Other Transcription Besides Medical
Sep 10, 2011

I have become pretty miserable/bored lately.  I know its the job itself and I know what the future holds for it, but I can't go back to school right now to try to further my education for something else because I homeschool my kids and that is my first priority.  MT is just part time.  I've been MT'ing for close to 15 years and have never done any other transcribing.  I was just wondering if I wanted to venture out of medical and do general transcription w ...

I had never heard of them before, and there do not seem to be many posts in the archives about them, but then again, maybe that is a good thing.  Generally, you hear about the bad companies (which I realize is subjective), but not always about the good ones.  Any information is appreciated.  Thanks. ...

ALPHA Transcription - Any Experience With This Company?
Jan 04, 2011

Has anyone had any experience with this company?  I sent my resume for a job posting and was contacted right away.  The fishy thing (to me anyway) was that they didn't even want me to TEST for the position!  What is that about?  EVERY MT position I have EVER been a candidate for has wanted me to test.  But nope, I had a phone interview and the next thing I know I am being offered a position.  RED FLAG? ...

Anyone Have RECENT Experience With TTD (The Transcription Doctors)?
Jan 13, 2011

I've searched the archives and come across ALOT of bad reviews on them (and a few positive ones here and there) but most of them are over a year old. I'd really like to get some views from MTs that currently or very recently worked for them. I know many companies have changed hands in the last year so things may be completely different now compared to 1+ years ago.  Or maybe not. That's what I want to find out. I already know what thier payscale is, but I would like to know ...

Acute Care Transcription - Does Anyone Have Experience?
Jan 17, 2012

I have been transcribing for 30 years mostly orthopedics. I want very much to do acute care transcription. Does anyone think I have a chance to get into it? I feel as though I am at a dead end if I don't do something different to further my career. I feel very qualified to do it. I took a good course from AHDI with cardiology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, and surgeries through Oak Horisons. This was a very well-rounded course and covered everything involved. Thought maybe someone m ...

when I hit the search button, it just takes me to a blank screen.  Not sure if it is a problem with the web site or my internet.  Anyway, I was thinking I read some time ago that they did not pay for spaces or headers or footers and people were quite upset, but I might have them confused with another company.  Any information would be appreciated. Anybody Have Experience With National Medical Transcription Company?
Oct 07, 2010

I received a job interview for an IC position with a company called National Medical Transcription with headquarters in New York.  Has anybody worked with this company? My main concern was that the company does not offer direct deposit but rather issues a check via mail.  Next concern is a "transparent" means of tallying up productivity for 65 character lines and spaces included. I would appreciate any feedback from present or past contractors. Thank you. ...

Anyone Have Experience With Turn Around Time Transcription Co? Or Medrite XL Platform?
Jun 12, 2013

Hi, I recently spoke to someone from Turn Around Time Transcription.  I had found their ad on mtjobs.com.  Does anyone have any knowledge of this company?  They use the Medrite XL platform and the owner told me all the transcriptionists said it was an easy platform to work on, but then I looked it up and MTs were complaining about the line counts being so low.  Any info on either the company or the platform?  Thanks, Kathy ...

Do You Think MT Experience Will Help In Getting An MR Job?
Feb 11, 2010

There is a hospital in my area that has 2 jobs I am interested in, one is a records analyst and the other is a records clerk.  I am definitely ready to start working outside of the home, but I fear my MT experience will not help me much in getting one of these jobs.  I am just wondering what you all think or if I should bother to apply.  I am thinking they are going to want people with hospital experience.  Thanks a bunch for any information!! ...

MD-IT..any Experience?
Apr 12, 2010

Hi.  I was recently hired as an employee with MD-IT.  I filled out all my paperwork, did my computer audit, background check, etc. and was supposed to call at 9:00 a.m. this morning to begin downloading their transcription platform.  Well, I called and got voicemail.  I left a message and have not heard back.  To me, if you have an appointment scheduled, you should be available for that appointment.  I'm sure they would expect nothing less from me.  I real ...

Experience.
Jun 08, 2010

I have been noticing that the experience level required to even get looked at for an MT job has went up. The 2 year experience mark has now went to 3 in most postings, and alot more postings are stating they want a minimum of 5 years. It is an up hill battle in an already hard market but with these kind of requirements I supose the seasoned MT's can rest a little easier and the newbies I guess can look for another line of work. I have already switched my gears and will finish my MA deg ...

Too MUCH Experience?
Jul 23, 2010

I am trying to figure why I never get a call-back on job applications anymore.  For instance I applied at one company who was advertising a week or so ago, I'm sure I did perfectly or almost so on the test, never heard from them, and yet now they are advertising again.   My range is not great, mostly ER and clinic, so maybe this is the issue but I have applied for these positions recently to no avail. I have 16 years experience and I wonder if they think I will want too much ...

How To Get Experience W/o Job & Job W/o Experience?
Sep 18, 2010

it's the old question - how to get acute care experience that everyone wants - when none of the local hospitals are hiring for MT (I've checked).  I could try "cold calling" doctor's offices and see who does their transcription (unless they have some kind of digital chart system - fill in the appropriate boxes on their laptops - I think our family doc uses that system). I actually had "formal" hospital acute care training 11 years ago - so seems like a lifetime ago.  Th ...
