New Grad Medical Transcription - company that will hire with no experience - jenn

Posted: Jan 30, 2014

Just graduated from MT school and I am having a lot of trouble finding a company that will hire with no experience... any advice?? thanks!   Jenn

Did you read this board before MT school to see how bad things are? - for even 20-30+ years experience people? sm

People with 20 to 30 plus years experence can't even get hired. There's not enough decent jobs to go around for the skilled people.

Did you see that on here before you went to MT school? Or at any time during school?

That's the harsh and bitter reality of this career, no matter what you may have been told at school. You're going to have a tough time getting in anywhere, sad but true, and working for close to nothing without experience.

What school did you go to?

Penn Foster Career School - jenn

I did not look at these boards until I started looking for jobs. I talked to several different transcriptionists in my area though and they had nothing bad to say. I attended Penn Foster Career School and wish I would have done my research on that too because it isn't an AHDI school.

Schools - see msg pls

Just because it's AHDI approved, doesn't mean it's a good school, anyway. They seem to approve some pretty bad schools. They have a financial interest in keeping MT going, so they're totally not a good reference.

In any case, you didn't go to a good school, so probably nobody will test you. I think that's the bigger problem. With one of the better schools, someone would at least test you.

That being said, just because you land a job, doesn't mean you'll have work.

Not sure what you mean by "talking to transciptionists" in your area. Was this an Internet forum, or do you know them personally? I'm asking because if you know them personally, maybe one of them could mentor you to at least bring you up to clinic knowledge.

Hello, Jean. I wish there were some way to sugarcoat the truth, but there is not. Whether a school is an "AHDI school" is irrelevant. What matters whether you are trained using the SUM program. I was an MT/MTSO for nearly 40 years, and I am afraid I do not think highly of Penn Foster. It does not come close to adequately preparing people for the demands of an MT career. There are so many highly skilled, already trained MTs out there looking for work. They have a proven track record and can hit the ground running. The MT world is changing rapidly. I advised my own niece NOT to go into it a few years back. My own opinion, for what it's worth (maybe nothing) is that if you really want to be an MT, you need to get adequate training. You might call the Andrews School and speak with Ms. Andrews. I do not know her personally (and have never worked for Andrews), but I understand she is very kind and will give you an accurate picture of what is happening in the industry. Is there some medically-related field that might meet your needs? Working in a physician's office as a clerk or receptionist, etc? I do hope you will be able to find something to meet your needs. Best of luck to you.

I graduated from my local community college in December and just started working for a large company. Even my instructor told me to not to be surprised if it took several months to land a job but I did really good on the testing and got hired so hopefully you can prove yourself and get a job too.

Otherwise have you considered sitting for the RHDS (formerly RMT) exam? Having those credentials could help you despite your school if you have the skills to pass it.

Just my two cents.

'large company'? - jenn

Do you mind if I ask what company you got a job with?

Anybody Have Experience With National Medical Transcription Company?
Oct 07, 2010

I received a job interview for an IC position with a company called National Medical Transcription with headquarters in New York.  Has anybody worked with this company? My main concern was that the company does not offer direct deposit but rather issues a check via mail.  Next concern is a "transparent" means of tallying up productivity for 65 character lines and spaces included. I would appreciate any feedback from present or past contractors. Thank you. ...

New Grad Medical Transcription - I Worked Hard ....
Aug 13, 2010

I am a recent graduate from medical transcription school. Yeah, I know, big whoop. Actually it was for me, since I was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to happen. Why did I do this? Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time and, like anyone else who has never tried it, I tought medical transcription would be a lot easier than it is. My I'm-So-Excited Factor: I have no stars in my eyes. I know it will be hard to find a job and if I do, I won't make much until I get a lot bett ...

Has Anyone Had Experience Doing Any Other Transcription Besides Medical
Sep 10, 2011

I have become pretty miserable/bored lately.  I know its the job itself and I know what the future holds for it, but I can't go back to school right now to try to further my education for something else because I homeschool my kids and that is my first priority.  MT is just part time.  I've been MT'ing for close to 15 years and have never done any other transcribing.  I was just wondering if I wanted to venture out of medical and do general transcription w ...

I had never heard of them before, and there do not seem to be many posts in the archives about them, but then again, maybe that is a good thing.  Generally, you hear about the bad companies (which I realize is subjective), but not always about the good ones.  Any information is appreciated.  Thanks. ...

How To Gain Experience If Nobody Will Hire You
Apr 06, 2010

I am a relatively new MT working in a large hospital in a subspecialty (Dermatopathology). My goal is to work at home and all job openings I see for working at home require experience working in acute care.   I graduated from a 2 year college last year and received an Associates of Science degree in Office Administration with a major in Medical Transcription. I am pretty sure that my college degree got me this MT job since I had no previous work experience.&nbs ...

I Am So Confused...why Did This Company Hire Me??
Feb 17, 2010

I was hired a month ago by a large MT service that starts with a T.  They were really needing help.  Well, for the past five days there has been no work.  I mean none.  Why did they even hire me?  I gave up a different job for this one, as I thought the T had better benefits, but now I am stuck and wishing I had never taken this job.  Why do companies do this?  This business just gets harder and harder to take.  ;o( ...

Can You Relate? My Experience As A Medical Transcriptionist
Oct 19, 2011

I've been an MT for 12 years.  I started out with MedQuist as a subcontractor.  Life was great!  Then came employee status and being performance managed, VS, crappy software, overworked supervisors and nit picking about being literally 10 minutes late for work or getting heavy points taken off my quality score for typing "were" instead of "was."  I went to Focus, which was then taken over by Nuance, and the same experience as above started happening.  So I went ...

My Company Merger/buyout Experience
Mar 08, 2014

I had an administrative role at my company before it was taken over by a big player. The following things happened. 1. The supervisors at my company were demoted to MTs unless they had a college degree and were willing to travel extensively. 2. The QA staff were kept but their pay changed from hourly to production with strict quotas. Almost immediately they had to QA terrible work from other countries. Every one of them quit before long because they made about half of what they previously made ...
