Too MUCH experience? - weary MT

Posted: Jul 23, 2010

I am trying to figure why I never get a call-back on job applications anymore.  For instance I applied at one company who was advertising a week or so ago, I'm sure I did perfectly or almost so on the test, never heard from them, and yet now they are advertising again.   My range is not great, mostly ER and clinic, so maybe this is the issue but I have applied for these positions recently to no avail.

I have 16 years experience and I wonder if they think I will want too much per line?  Or what?!  I need a job and just want to figure out why I am having no luck.  Anyone else having this problem?  Would appreciate some input or some buzz on anyone hiring in the above departments!

Thanks!

It may very well be that you don't have acute-care experience. From the ads I've seen, most want acute care or they are requesting specialized clinic care (i.e. cardiology).

Are you contact the company after you test via email? I *always* do this.

You have to be very proactive and not just sit back and wait to see what happens.

Its just another form of discrimination. Most MTSOs - discriminate against American MTs. nm

I don't know why it still happens, but when I read some of these posts/comments my jaw drops. I have a rather extensive circle of MT friends online. NONE, please let me repeat, NONE of them have been discriminated against. NONE, again I repeat, NONE of them have been turned down for jobs because they have "too much" experience.

I try not to enter the "hater" conversations because seriously, they are simply ridiculous, but for goodness sake, stop blaming every MTSO on your plight. GOOD MTS are employed and treated appropriately. If you are a good MT and this is not the case then there is one of two scenarios going on. 1) You have settled and are not digging for the jobs where MTs ARE valued. 2) You're simply not as good as you think you are.

This whole they're out to get us (stupid by any means given they don't make money w/o us) or they won't hire us because we're American or because we're talented, just speaks to a pervasive paranoia that is astonishing to me.

I share your thoughts, thank you for posting your message.
Just because *YOU* have a good employer doesnt - mean we all do. Most of us DONT.
[ In Reply To ..]
If you're too *GOOD* to participate in the conversations on this board, then why don't you get back to work at your oh-so-perfect job?
MOST? Don't - Do not buy that
[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe the same complainers don't but I don't buy that they are the majority.

And if you are one of them, then I refer you to either #1 or #2 :)

Going back to my GOOD job now.
Most DONT. Get back to us after your co. is sold to - a bigger co. someday. Or after - sm

all the transcribeable work is offshored, and you're left trying to make even minimum wage on the worst-of-the-worst ESLs, on lousy software, or worse, VR, all for a couple cents per line. Tell us how fabulously happy you are, then.

As an IC and also a transcription service owner, let me tell you that it is possible that your application was overlooked. When I posted a job on MTJobs a few months ago, I got 497 replies and applications in THREE DAYS! Obviously, it's impossible to go through that many applications for two positions, so I started with the first applications and went from there. I would suggest trying to get your application in for any desired position as SOON as possible, and if they request cut and paste, no attachments of resumes, be sure to comply. I wouldn't open ANY attachments, so that would automatically mean I would not have seen your resume. Hope this helps! I have 26 years of experience so keep trying!

I was in the same boat, and finally starting downplaying my years of doing this. I just say 10+ and send them my resume. Of course, they can do the math, but I figure it was better to at least get them interested enough to look, but I have taken tests and failed and didn't know why, taken tests and passed and then these companies tell me what they have and what they pay, and I want to go screaming into the night. I finally took a job (IC position) doing clinic notes. I never thought I would not want to do hospital dictation, but no more, I hate it. Too many ESLs and voice is such a rip off. Keep on trying, it really takes a lot of work and effort. I don't know if I would have the energy to try again if something happens with this outfit. I do know of a couple of places that are looking, if you want to e-mail me. One is an IC position though and kind of iffy at this point (a new account, but might be worth checking into. It is hospital work though, so is the other one. Again, "Keep the Faith."

I think most companies with just enough experience but not too much. That sounds silly - but I'm sure that is it. I've been trying to get a job in house at the local hospital - but their ad only calls for one year's experience (I have 35+) - so they probably aren't paying squat and want newbies! that way they can pay little and train them in their ways. Just keep trying - may be you need to get some acute care experience. Try the IC jobs - can't recall the companies name by the one from Phoenix hires for ICs for just clinic work.

32 years experience here. Same boat. I think its - because we aint fooled by MTSO cr@p.

[ In Reply To ..]
We've been there, done that. We think production is good, but quality is better. We know they cheat us on lines, cheat us on pay, pay us peanuts. We remember when MT was a career choice, not a hidden American sweatshop. Try "erasing" 10 or more years of your experience on your resume next time you apply. You might get a whole different result.

not advisable, - sm

if you falsify anything on an application, that alone can be grounds for dismissal later. Besides, if they don't appreciate your experience and knowledge, you probably won't want to work for them anyway. The real issue might be that they are afraid you will demand too much money, so just put that pay is negotiable on your application instead.

Merely leaving off a job here and there is not falsifying. sm - RoadRunnerMT

When I graduated from our community college with my MT certification, part of it included a course on job hunting, etc. We had resume classes and it was taught to us there to only put down the RELEVANT information to which job type you were applying. Say if I had a job I gained really nil experience from, only stayed for 2 weeks or 1 month, etc., I leave it off. It is not falsifying unless you purposely put the wrong information on there. So leaving a few years off your resume, as long as that experience doesn't hurt you, is not truly falsifying. I don't have anything on my resume that does not pertain to MT field. I don't have some little hole in the wall companies that I stayed a short time and it didn't work out. Just make sure you don't leave big gaps in dates or you will be questioned or they might be curious as to why the gap but hopefully would ask and give you a chance to respond.

Are you including acute care with your ER? sm - RoadRunnerMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I agree with the other poster who said maybe it is because you don't specify acute care experience. Most of the bigger MTSOs want "recent" acute care experience and so many years of it. I think your range you are showing is what is hurting you. After all, most ads state what they pay. We don't have many options to name our price anymore!

me, me - hire me!!

[ In Reply To ..]
Can you figure out somehow what the MTSO wants to hear? I've always been able to sort of "tweak" my presentation to fit their expectations. Not falsifying, just highlighting the bits of the CV that they would be interested in--Highlighting your strengths that would match their needs. I have 20 years' experience and recently applied to a place that wanted more acute care experience than I had, but I really hammered in what acute care knowledge I DID have. A few hours later, bingo, interview, job. Their application questions should give you a hint about what they consider important, so really play up to what they are looking for! (The company didn't put me on an acute care account, though!)Best wishes and go out there and sell yourself! (Well, not actually sell yourself-- you know what I mean!) Anyway, it was either my attitude, or they just needed someone the very moment my resume came in. Who can know the whole picture??

New Graduate - Experience In Transcription Is Experience

I am a new graduate and need to find a job! I am also new to this site. I got the site info from a friend that has been doing transcription work for many years. She has given me some leads, but as of now, nothing! It appears that most of these companies wnat 2 or more years experience. Does anyone know how I can start and get some experience? Do You Think MT Experience Will Help In Getting An MR Job?
Feb 11, 2010

There is a hospital in my area that has 2 jobs I am interested in, one is a records analyst and the other is a records clerk.  I am definitely ready to start working outside of the home, but I fear my MT experience will not help me much in getting one of these jobs.  I am just wondering what you all think or if I should bother to apply.  I am thinking they are going to want people with hospital experience.  Thanks a bunch for any information!! ...

Hi.  I was recently hired as an employee with MD-IT.  I filled out all my paperwork, did my computer audit, background check, etc. and was supposed to call at 9:00 a.m. this morning to begin downloading their transcription platform.  Well, I called and got voicemail.  I left a message and have not heard back.  To me, if you have an appointment scheduled, you should be available for that appointment.  I'm sure they would expect nothing less from me.  I real ...

Experience.
Jun 08, 2010

I have been noticing that the experience level required to even get looked at for an MT job has went up. The 2 year experience mark has now went to 3 in most postings, and alot more postings are stating they want a minimum of 5 years. It is an up hill battle in an already hard market but with these kind of requirements I supose the seasoned MT's can rest a little easier and the newbies I guess can look for another line of work. I have already switched my gears and will finish my MA deg ...

How To Get Experience W/o Job & Job W/o Experience?
Sep 18, 2010

it's the old question - how to get acute care experience that everyone wants - when none of the local hospitals are hiring for MT (I've checked).  I could try "cold calling" doctor's offices and see who does their transcription (unless they have some kind of digital chart system - fill in the appropriate boxes on their laptops - I think our family doc uses that system). I actually had "formal" hospital acute care training 11 years ago - so seems like a lifetime ago.  Th ...

My Experience With TTS
May 26, 2011

I just wanted to let anyone who may be interested know what my experience with TTS has been recently.  A job for a Delta Team member was advertised, for which I applied with my resume and cover letter.  It's worth noting here that I meet every qualification in the ad.  The job sounded like it was difficult, but I applied as I wanted a salaried position.  I received an e-mail from *******, the same one who was sent packing from another MTSO last year.  The e-mail gave all sorts of inf ...
