MT jobs ? - Val
Posted: Nov 19, 2011
I live in MN and I just got my career diploma in Medical Transcription. I would like to start my career but I'm having trouble finding anywhere that will hire a new grad. If anyone has any ideas on how I can get my foot in the door it would be greatly appreciated if you let me know what I can do.

Much of it depends on where/how you trained. If you are an Andrews grad, you will have no problems. If you are a grad of one of the "institutes" that advertise in the women's magazines, my best advice would be to get more training. Did your program use the SUM program?

SOAP Transcription hired me as a new grad. They were a pretty decent company to work for but I have no idea if they're hiring.

Try posting in the job wanted board and putting your resume in the resume bank. I had a hard time finding a job until I did that. Someone contacted me and hired me as a transcriptionist. She was willing to give me a chance and I have been working there since July.
I would try that if I were you!

finding a company just starting out, not one of the larger, well-established companies. They're too picky and, IMO, they pass up a lot of good prospects. I got a diploma through MTatHome and not one of the more well-known schools. It took me 6 months but I got hired.
If you did have really good training, I would disagree with NMMT a little - Different Advice

If you got really good training and can pass the tests for both the well-established smaller companies and the larger well-established MTSOs, you'll have the best choices. You will very much want to work for those 'picky' MTSOs who have serious requirements for hiring. There are companies that will hire anyone and everyone, but there is absolutely no opportunity for advancement and people usually don't last long. Go for the best companies if your skills allow you to pass their tests.

the training has anything to do with getting a job in this business. Personally, I think being a good MT has everything to do with the skills you already possess before you take any course...regardless of the training you get. I think getting your foot in the door with any company you can is your best bet. You can always find out later if this is the type of work you can handle. You'll learn soon enough if it is. There are specific skills required to do this job and, if you don't have them, you won't succeed regardless of any training you've had. I've known those who received "great training" from schools such as Andrews and quit soon after they landed a job. I've known those, such as myself, who received training from your average "run-of-the-mill" online transcription courses and did very well once they got started. It depends a lot on which company you work for whether or not you will have opportunity for advancement, regardless of your skills. I worked for one MTSO that didn't pay very well and, when they found out I was looking elsewhere, they begged me to stay but still wouldn't offer me a raise. There are MTSOs who offer better pay for your skills and those who won't raise your pay no matter how skilled you are and regardless of your training or where you were trained. Needless to say, getting hired is more important than pay if you're looking to get started and are really interested in doing this for a living, IMO.

I think training has EVERYTHING to do with what kind of an MT someone will be. People go through what are little more than diploma mills, no SUM training, no access to live instructors, and cannot perform on the job. In all of my years, I have never heard of an Andrews grad who had a hard time getting a job. There is a reason for that. On the other hand, I have seen a lot of people (usually poor single women) who have put their faith in schools that were little more than matchbooks. They lost their money and their time.
I don't believe that...sm - NMMT

based on my own experience. Some people do much better without an instructor and do quite well on their own if they (as I've already said) have the skills needed to begin with. I didn't say an Andrews grad would have a hard time getting a job. I said the one I knew quit after getting a job because she couldn't handle it like she thought she could. I also know of several women who put their faith in "matchbook" schools and lost money and it was simply because they thought it would be easy and they would make a ton of money. That wasn't true for me. I knew I could do this type of work. I know what skills I possess. I paid very little for my course, breezed through it and got a job 6 months later. A new grad from any school or course has a hard time because the majority of MTSOs want someone with experience. If you get lucky, like I did, you don't need expensive training at the best of schools. I was hired by a new MTSO just starting in business for the simple reason, mine was the first resume they received. I'm good at what I do and my training didn't help me that much. I already knew a lot about the terminology, I could type fast and my spelling and grammar is excellent. If you already have the skills required, the training is merely something you need on your resume to prove you've had training of some sort. I'm not single but I've been poor and it had nothing to do with my ability to do this job or the training I had to have to get it. If you're poor, you certainly can't afford some of the expensive school's tuition anyway. My course was very inexpensive and I finished it in 3 months and found a job after. Being poor and single has nothing to do with whether you succeed or not. It has to do with the skills you already possess and whether you have the desire and commitment to finish a course...any course.
No, you didn't learn enough about MT in 3 months - sm

Now this is an example of why we see people in distress because nobody will hire them or they can't hold a job. I would be very curious to know what kind of job you got after 3 months of training. That is not enough to cover even the basics of medical transcription. It isn't enough time to experience transcription of all the different specialties.
Is it possible to learn how to do a specialty and get lucky enough for someone to hire you to do that? Sure, that has happened. We used to get jobs with no experience at all, but that's not the world we live in now.
No, it is not true that "A new grad from any school or course has a hard time" because they are new. That was your experience.
I don't think anyone begrudges you the fact that you've found work. That's good. Chances are from the description you gave of your training, you could have had that job with no training at all. Three months does not equal appropriate MT training. You did say that yours was the first resume the new MTSO just starting out in business had received. There is your answer. You got very, very lucky. It would be irresponsible to recommend that same thing to others who might not fall into a job so easily. It took you 6 months but you found something that is working for you. You found a brand new person starting a new business and you were the first person who wanted a job working there. That's awesome luck! Be very happy about that, but does not put you in a position of saying this was a wise way to go in the first place.
I will agree with you that an MT has to bring certain skills and abilities with them or they aren't going to make it no matter how long they study. I'll also say again that I hope you do very well and keep that job as long as you want it.
Sorry... but I did - NMMT

I've been at it for 10 years. Done it all from a teaching hospital with multispecialties to hematology, oncology to orthopaedics. I'm not in distress. Far from it. LOL My first job was in orthopaedics but a few months later I got a job for a teaching hospital and with only 3 months of training. Can you believe that ?? Maybe the fact that I'm close to 60 with children and grandchildren and have a wealth of knowledge, never held less than a 4.0 in college may have had something to do with it. My sister, who's an RN, tells me I know far more than she does and one of my college instructors begged me to become a nurse because of my GPA. Nursing is not my bag. You have to like what you do.
My advice was to start out with a small company and I stand by that advice whether any one chooses to take it or not. I don't need for you to tell me I didn't have the training necessary. Apparently, someone thought I did. I was lucky to find a company who wasn't so picky they didn't want to give me a shot. It would have been their loss. I would have found work regardless of the training I had. I was just lucky I started out for a new MTSO. Some of them are willing to take a shot and they didn't even care where I got my training. They only cared if I could do the job and I did it very well, thank you, and still am. ; )

If there are doctor's offices or clinics in your area that have transcription done either in-house or at home, maybe with tapes (yes, they still do it) try that first and get some experience and speed under your belt. Then try applying to a local or national. I am a firm believer that If you have a good vocabulary, if you read, if you have a good ear, you will do well. I used to be an in-hospital transcription supervisor (good old days) and have hired MT's with no experience who were well educated/well read and had good keyboard skills and they turned out in very short order to be excellent, productive employees.

Just Another Vent About Jobs, No Jobs, Requirement Of Jobs, Etc. Aug 18, 2010It is insulting to all of us with the way that MT pay has gone down the drain, it is frustrating and aggravating to look for a "decent" job these days, trying to work out which companies will treat you fairly, which ones lie about their platforms, work, etc., and not only do these companies not want to pay us what we are worth but now I see that MANY companies are requiring the MT to have or "be willing" to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of equipment. Will We All Be Out Of Jobs? Dec 02, 2009These eScription, Nuance, EMR, etc. posts are all very sobering. Once And For All - There Are No Jobs! Dec 20, 2009On almost every thread somebody mentions their finances are in dire straights. There will undoubtedly be fewer jobs for MTs but there will still be jobs for those who can transcribe those reports. It will a ...
