MT Jobs ! - mglickler
Posted: Mar 09, 2011
So, I am about to finish a medical transcription certificate program through a community college. I have started going through these boards and I am starting to get nervous about job possibilities. Most postings are about how horrible the industry is and how impossible it is to get a job. I've been working on this for 2 years now and I'm starting to get nervous that it's been for, potentially, nothing. Any advice?
Find out where your school places their graduates. - See message

The place where people get in trouble is when they've chosen a school that doesn't teach the skills the employers want in an MT. The schools have a track record with the employers, good or bad. If your school has a curriculum which covers the right things and enough of it, the employers already know that, and if they don't, they know that too. You mainly hear about graduates of schools that are falling way short of producing graduates who can transcribe well enough to get and keep a good job. Jobs are there, but only for those who have the skills.
Talk to your instructor and find out where the last bath of graduates went to work. Apply with those employers. If the last graduates were good, they are going to be bugging your school wanting to know when they can get more just like the last batch. Good luck with your job search!

That makes 2 of us. Took me 2 1/2 years to finish program. Been looking for work for 6 months... nothing so far!
Plenty of Hiring Going On - MT

There is plenty of hiring going on. Not sure why people are having trouble finding MT jobs. If the companies aren't testing you, then they probably know the course fell way short. If they are testing you but you aren't passing, they generally allow you to test again in 6 months.
Not all community colleges prepare well enough for actual MT work. They are good in many areas, but fall very short on the ear training, hands-on part. Some don't even use actual dictators.
For those interested in going into the field, above information is very important, so be sure you ask some serious questions about how much of the course is actual transcribing--the best MT courses have at least of year of hands-on, real dictations in a variety of specialties, accents, work types, settings, etc. During that same year, you are learning other things, like terminology and the medical sciences, so if you forge ahead at a steady pace, you can certainly finish the entire course in a year.
Community colleges have their place, but not necessarily for MT work!
Hiring MTs v hiring NEW MTs - mt2
[ In Reply To ..]
Hiring in general does not reflect hiring new MTs. 99% of the jobs listed require a minimum of 2 years, some 3 or 5 and I've seen those with 10 years required.
It *is* difficult to get a job with no experience.
Best you can do is keep applying, keep trying. Don't demand that you must work at home, thereby ruling out going in-house to work to get those years of experience.
They require that experience but make exceptions, as most of us know - nm

Hiring - MT

I'm not sure if you read the entire note above about WHY the new MT wasn't hired. Please read it again. It was very clear on why and it had nothing to do with a person not having 2 yrs experience.

She's finishing a course, can't find work. That's not cause she's new?
I agree with what you said and have one more thing that may be a problem for the 2 grads - see message

I agree with the last poster. Also, I would not let prospective employers know that it took you that long to get through your training. Medical transcription deals requires an MT to be able to do quality work in a timely manner. The fact that it took so long to get through the course is another red flag, unless you went to a school that is well known for producing graduates who can do excellent work. Even so, they would wonder why it took you so long, and the fact that you were working while you were going to school isn't the right answer. Many students do that and still finish in a year. Less than a year is another story entirely, definitely not good. They know that you will not have learned what you need to know in less than a year. Hope that helps.

Yes, there is plenty of hiring--but people have to have a good, solid education. Too many pseudo "matchbooks" out there do not produce good grads. Back in the day when I was in a position to hire, I was not interested in anybody who did not use the SUM program.
Look at the number of hits per job on the job board. average 2000 looks - aveage 1000 resumes sent.

New MT - MT too long

A few years ago it used to be a lucrative field, now it is hard to make a decent living. I work 14-16 hour days just to get by. Most now only hire independent contractors, no benefits. I hope you have a backup.
At the same time, many MTs seem to be working only 30 hrs/week and doing fine - Milage varies

One person's "hard to make a decent living" is another person's ideal job for which they give thanks every day. We're all different. We can't expect any job to be perfect and it certainly isn't going to be the right job for everyone. Times change. People keep up or get left behind. That is true in most fields and certainly is true in this one.
I wouldn't try with the national companies at first - cw

I graduated in February and first set out testing with the national companies. Then my school introduced me to a local pathologist office looking for an MT. They did not question my "distance learning" or my ablity to complete their work, even though I finished the course in six months.
Don't let anyone discourage you if the course taken was not through a college or took way less than one year. These were not even factors during the interviews. Although I made sure to bring in the course outline, which they kept.
Distance Learning is often the best, but 6 months would definitely be a red flag - sm

College courses in MT have a reputation for teaching things that aren't needed and not teaching those that are. I don't think anyone was saying that you needed to go through a college. That's not usually a recommendation we hear. We do usually hear recommendations that it's important to have solid training, which takes at least a year if you plan to be prepared to do acute care. If you just want to work in a doctor's office for 1 specialty, you may be fine with a shorter course.

Just Another Vent About Jobs, No Jobs, Requirement Of Jobs, Etc. Aug 18, 2010It is insulting to all of us with the way that MT pay has gone down the drain, it is frustrating and aggravating to look for a "decent" job these days, trying to work out which companies will treat you fairly, which ones lie about their platforms, work, etc., and not only do these companies not want to pay us what we are worth but now I see that MANY companies are requiring the MT to have or "be willing" to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of equipment. Where Do I Find The Status Of Jobs And Number Of Jobs? Nov 26, 2012I tried entering my ID plus dep on the Fluency for Transcription page and it said my account was inactive. Will We All Be Out Of Jobs? Dec 02, 2009These eScription, Nuance, EMR, etc. posts are all very sobering. Does anybody think that we'll all be out of jobs in 5 years, 3 years??? and will we be cut loose quickly or slowly phased out? given enough notice?? etc.?? I think I'm getting to the point where working in a grocery store is starting to look more and more appealing. The thing that contradicts all this is that most of the companies constantly beg for extra work, higher production, consis ...
Once And For All - There Are No Jobs! Dec 20, 2009On almost every thread somebody mentions their finances are in dire straights. And on almost every thread somebody whose life is just peachy demands to know why they "let" their finances get shaky and why they didn't just "get another job before things got so bad". We are not sitting around just wringing our hands, as is so often implied. Many of us have been applying, constantly, for months; with more entering the job search every day, the competition gets harder and hard ...

EMR And MT Jobs Mar 09, 2010I recently changed my health care to Kaiser and have observed first hand and for the first time, the use of electronic medical records; they really are of immeasurable assistance to each provider who is treating the patient. Nevertheless, there are still certain physicians who must dictate, i.e., surgeons, consultants, certain medical specialists. There will undoubtedly be fewer jobs for MTs but there will still be jobs for those who can transcribe those reports. It will a ...

Jobs Out There Not MT, Sm Jul 24, 2010I just ran into a local job already, MOWING GRASS. The lady's lawn mowing man just finished school and is quitting the mowing. She paid him $1400 last month to mow, run the weedeater, keep weeds out of the flowers, etc. ($25 an hour).
My husband does handyman work and is always being asked to mow or if he knows anyone. He hates it. I like it. I think I just might take this on. (Probably for less money, though. She thought that was too much, b ...
