Indian MTs - Indian Standards

[ In Reply To ..]
You just need to ask one question. What is the line rate after adding up all those goodies? I doubt it will go past 3 cpl for straight transcription.

Perks or not, MT is not a living wage in India - either

[ In Reply To ..]
It's not that the MTSOs are discriminating against US MTs in favor of Indian MTs. Their only loyalty is to their own wallets. They probably think it's great (and find it amusing) how many of us blame Indian MTs for "taking our jobs." Our racism and nationalism just help obscure the real issues about how the extraordinary greed of the few "haves" is grinding the many "have nots" deeper and deeper into poverty, here in the US and in many other countries as well.
It's not racism or nationalism - duh
[ In Reply To ..]
It's being mad that our jobs are being taken and being bled dry because someone on the other side of the world with, let's face it, poor QA, does our job for an obviously low accuracy requirement and still MTSOs will hire them.

Food for thought: $1.00 US is 0.02 Indian rupees. Indian work week: 6 days (Monday through Saturday, typically 12-hour shifts, no overtime pay, no "minimum wage" guarantee). The reason for some of the "perks" people read about in regard to on-site services at Indian MTSOs is because they are not permitted to leave the job site to go for a burger, pick the kids up from school or any of the other things we take for granted. I reside in the US but I've been curious about how they do things so did some research. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence, ladies. If you think the MTs over there are the ones benefiting, think again. It is all money driven and the corporations are the ones making the profit.
The fact is.....India MTs are salary, we are line count - I believe this is illegal.
[ In Reply To ..]
No matter how you slice it, it is ILLEGAL. We are global.
I am sure MM would be thrilled to pay us the same salary - they pay OS. Would you like that? nm

Except they do have to pay US MTs minimum, USA law. - MM is hoping we will keep working SM
[ In Reply To ..]
betting our skills, ego, wishes that we can win the gamble and be able to do this for, at least, a little over minimum wage. If we can only do it for minimum, might as well do something else.
Indian MTs - GlobalMT
[ In Reply To ..]
MTs in India must be paid according to Indian standards, not American standards. India used to be an English colony; hence, they are paid x1 a month, just like many countries in Europe.

These MTs are just as exploited as we are in the U.S. They are not "taking our job" but the companies are finding new workers, India, Philippines, etc or wherever, to get as much done with a minimum amount of expense.

Be mad at the companies, not the MTs in India. They just try to survive, just as we do.
True, don't hate the player, hate the game. NM - anon

Yep, the perks are about the only inducements they have to keep workers there, who've just - about had it as much as we have.
[ In Reply To ..]

The general physical atmosphere seems awful to me, some locations as bad as call centers with the factory-like cramming in of bodies, but so much worse than doing call center work in that kind of environment, I'd imagine, with trying to hear to actually transcribe/edit over all that background noise of other MTs.  I don't envy them one little bit, "perks" or not.

Quality incentives? - India QA

[ In Reply To ..]
Quality of India MT work is awful. I've had to proofread the junk, it looks like a 3-year-old typed it. Obviously they offer quality incentives because they know nobody there will get the accuracy required to earn it, LOL

They lie to us,,they lie to them - nm

Supposed to be one global company. - Global labor lawsuit.

[ In Reply To ..]
It may be okay to have different line rates, but if we are getting paid by line and India MT's are getting paid salary, well then, I SMELL LABOR LAWSUIT.

Some thoughts - Anonymous

[ In Reply To ..]
First of all, recruiters in India just as in the US, probably say things to get bodies in the door. If anyone gets paid salary, it is probably the managers and maybe the QA staff, if such a thing exists over there. The facility where I work (I QA the account) uses an Indian company for their transcription. I know what they charge us but I'm guessing that the MTs see very little of that. I can't say what the working conditions are like at M-Modal India, but the company we use is staffed 24-7. including holidays (ours and theirs). I know they work weekends because there is always work to QA on Monday morning. I'm not defending anyone and I'm sad that they took work away from domestic MTs, but I don't think life in India (including the working conditions for MTs) is very good. Also, you can't compare dollars to rupees. .03 a line might seem like big bucks to someone in India. Look at what happened recently at the garment factory in Bangladesh - I know it's a different country, the none of the US labor laws are applicable in third world countries.

Article posted above, MTs are salary, shift diff, incentives - in India. America MTs.. nothing

[ In Reply To ..]
It is not right. We are global. I smell a rat!
Your options and more thoughts - Anonymous
[ In Reply To ..]
"Fixed base salary" may mean a fixed line rate. I think many US companies pay weekend/evening differentials, many American MTs get that. Many companies also offer incentive pay. It also says that they provide insurance but it does not say if it is employer paid, I think you probably need additional information before making so many assumptions. Your options, as I see it, are:
1. Do nothing and continue status quo.
2. Complain to corporate and see how far that takes you.
3. Find another job.
4. Relocate to India and see how well you are treated.

If you try to compare your salary/line rate to theirs, you are going to lose that battle every time because of the huge difference in the exchange rate (which is why the work is going there to begin with). It is like comparing apples and oranges. They are getting their work done for pennies on the dollar, and that is the name of the game. Sorry to be so blunt; I anticipate numerous "dislikes."
No dislike from me; I realize this is my own fault - I stayed here when India
[ In Reply To ..]
bought us out. It's nobody's fault but mine. I still like to complain once in a while.
I agree with you. I have 1 more month of college - AND I AM OUT OF HERE!

From just about a month ago...

"I've been looking at exchange rates as well as information on salaries for MTs in India trying to figure out what they are earning. As best I can tell, a rupee is worth about 2 cents. If my math is correct, a starting MT is earing about $160/month. I cannot find any information as to their line rate. If anyone has better math skills (and it would not be difficult) please correct me. At that rate, you can see why they want all the work to go to India. Even their cost of living is not that low."

That is what I found as well in regard to the exchange rate; assume that their line rates are lower than ours. I also learned that the 6-days per week, 12-hour day is standard. No overtime pay, etc. (see my earlier post). What bothers me is what the MTSOs and other companies charge the hospitals and other health care facilities, yet the MTs share in very little (if any) of the profit, regardless of where in the world they reside.

I get a fixed salary too - cr

[ In Reply To ..]
It's called minimum wage. Of course, where I live, minimum wage is REAL minimum, but at least I can count on that much - for now.

How can you "count" on anything at all - What with NJA? (nm)

Mine is the highest and sometimes I make under. - Mine is $9.14 an hour.

Sometimes I make $7.80 an hour, but MM has to pay me my $9.14.

Makes Me Sick
Dec 15, 2009

I am currently awaiting a call from my boss about going salary for my position as an MT, and I have no patience , so just for fun I googled "how much salary does a medical transciptionist get paid" and I clicked on this link to one of those question/answer sites where someone asked about the average transcriptionist's salary, and what I read made me sick. This person wrote a huge answer about what is to be an MT and how they get paid and such.  This person is claiming essentially they ...

FIXED
Aug 28, 2013

I just want to say Thank You to MTStars Support who worked tirelessly to fix whatever was wrong with the site. I appreciate your efforts!! GLAD to be back! However, it obviously has not changed the "Attitudes" of some who post on this forum, unfortunately. All the snide, snarkiness is back in full force. Is there anything that "support" can do about THAT? Just a thought. :-) ...

How I Fixed Error 372
Apr 12, 2010

As posted before, I had error 372 on opening Editscript version 9.  Well, tech support couldn't fix it, escription couldn't fix it, so I fixed it.  I did a system recovery where I basically just wiped everything off my computer and started all over.  Vista was basically reinstalled and it was like it was when it was new.  I reinstalled my antivirus and word.  Then when tech support installed ES 9, it worked.    ...

About The Monthly Bonus....
Oct 26, 2009

We used to get the monthly production bonus as a separate check on the 25th.   I didn't get a separate check for this although I should have qualified.  Paltry as it is, every little bit helps.  I do see an "incentive bonus" on my regular paystub, but I'm not sure if this is from some past incentive I have since forgotten about or if they are now just putting the regular monthly bonus on one statement along with our regular pay. Can anyone help?  Is the month ...

If Anyone Gets A Monthly Bonus.....
Nov 25, 2009

Have you found that it's getting less and less for the VERY SAME AMOUNT OF LINES?  I got a smaller bonus (piddly as it is) this month for MORE lines than I produced a few months ago and got a larger bonus for.  I know the bonus is pretty much based on some kind of whim and/or some computations that require a master's degree in mathematics to figure out, but it would sure be nice if they could be consistent.  I guess I should be glad I get one at ALL at this point.  ...

Just read this report, and I find it so ironic and insulting that they institute this new non-productive, mistake-promoting platform and garbage-producing ISR, degrade the sound, and then turn around and blame us for the customer complaints that are coming in about quality of work. They should be looking at their decision to buy it, listen to us about it's shortcomings, and fix it or go back to what worked, we enjoyed using and were productive with quality reports using it!&n ...

What To Do When Dr. Makes You Gag
May 07, 2011

Everytime I do this doctor's transcription (ironically he is a pulmonologist) he snorts phlegm in the back of his nose right into the microphone and will even cough from it sometimes because he does it so hard. Tonight during an 11 min. dictation by him, halfway through I had to get up and run to the bathroom because I was gagging. He did it 5 times in the first 5 min. of the job.  I once reported a doc who uses voice recognition and apparently did her dictation on her lunch break WHIL ...
