40K a year with M-Modal - CuriousMT

Posted: Oct 29, 2012

Honestly, is it possible to make 40K a year with M-Modal?

40K - Kimi

I honestly cannot see how you could, but maybe someone will call me a liar. :D

No one is going to call you a liar. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
However, the tone of your post implies that anyone who responds in disagreement with you is a liar.

Oh no - Kimi

[ In Reply To ..]
Oh no, no...what I meant was, I hope someone does come on here and say they can make 40K. Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for clarifying. Sorry for my tense response. - nm

No worries. For someone who is on the computer all day (me), I sure have a hard time typing what I really mean to say.

I do. - notsaying

I work nights. I work Sat AND Sun. I have had the same humongous/hard (90% ESL) acct since 1999 and get NJA maybe twice a year. I'm paid 10 and 6 cpl plus shift differential. I have 30+ yrs experience with a 3000+ expander dictionary. I'm 60+ with no children or husband or friends.

10/6 + shift diff? I'm totally jealous. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Just a few years ago when I worked for the Q (now MM), I was paid 9.5/4 and NO SHIFT DIFF on ASR (got shift diff on ST, but very, very rarely got any ST). I was full-time and worked every single Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and holidays. I was in the helper pool, so rarely ran out of work, but had to suffer through the worst of the worst random dictators from all across the country. If I worked my fingers to the bone, I could average about $11/hour. I've been in acute care for almost 20 years.

I am happy for you but I have 30 years - experience

[ In Reply To ..]
and work night shift at 9/4 cpl. When I was hired 9 months ago, they told me everyone was making 4 cpl for SR. Gosh, if they paid me 6 cpl for SR, I could probably do okay too. It is unfair of MModal to pay some MTs 6 plus cpl for SR and others 4 cpl SR. After all, we are all doing the same thing day in and day out and for the same reason-money!

PAY - Nature

[ In Reply To ..]
You have only been working for MM for 9 months. This person may hae been working for this company for years, and therefore her pay is higher, which is only fair. I have been working for this company for almost 12 years, and I make more than you do. In a few years, if you are still with MM, you will be making more than the new people.
but is that really true? - do people get raises?
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't hear a lot about people getting raises here.
haha, pay raise - lowered my...
[ In Reply To ..]
I've been with MM since 2000 starting nicely and recently had a pay DEcrease, after another pay INcrease in 2010. Decreased to below from 2000 initial start. I get paid per report. Hoping that ASR will provide fast turnaround for me. 0.72/per report.

I really don't think you can. - flmt

[ In Reply To ..]
I have worked for them for about 7 years and have made over $30,000 in a year, but not quite to 40 and that was before they cut our pay, so it would be almost impossible on a 40-hour week. You would have to work lots of overtime to get it.

6 cpl? - me

[ In Reply To ..]
I was told when I started that everyone gets 4 cpl for SR, that is just what they pay. I have been conned!!!

A lot of long-term higher paid employees were - notsaying

[ In Reply To ..]
reduced from 12 cpl to 10 cpl a while back but left at 6 cpl for ASR. Don't worry, I'm sure that will be the next thing to go. I've had nothing but pay reductions since I started in 1999.

What expander do you use? I just use what - MModal

[ In Reply To ..]
supplies but would like to try something different.

Thank you. I hope you don't mind my asking.

I just use MModal, but I add something every day. - notsaying

[ In Reply To ..]
I use Shortcut on my other acct, because it was the cheapest, but I don't really like it very much.
Thank you. I will keep using my - MModal
[ In Reply To ..]
expander then. I didn't know it could hold 3000 expansions though. I will start adding to it daily. Thanks for the tip.

Honestly, for the majority of us - Dinosaur

[ In Reply To ..]
I would say no. If you see that mentioned in one of their adds, they are referring to the 5% (or less) of us who were assigned some great account, which consists of all standard OP notes where you just fill in the blanks.

What do they not understand that pooling like - that is disastrous for SM

[ In Reply To ..]
production? I realize it's all the same to them, the work gets done, but if they cared at all about morale, they would use a different model, the way it used to be. It's a shame it has come to this with absolutely no respect or interest in the success of their employees. I so wish just ONE PERSON, in management of a large company (this one or Nuance) would speak up about this and try to change this mind think.
I realize that India has the predominant shares in this company, though, correct? That says it all. Anyone in middle management who has had experience in this job would know this is the wrong way to go, but greed takes over as usual and everyone shuts their eyes and closes their mouths.

pooling is one thing, but... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
paying some MTs 6 cpl for ASR and some only 4 cpl for ASR, even though the MTs have the same experience and skill level, is entirely unethical and unfair. A slight difference, I could forgive, but 2 cpl... that's no slight difference.
Then you should not have accepted that rate - You shorted yourself
[ In Reply To ..]
You could have said, no... I will not work for under 5.5 cpl, or 5 cpl, or whatever your bottom line was. They offered 4, you took it. How is that unetihical? You should have said no.
You're right, I did have a choice. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
When my local hospital outsourced us to the Q, I was given a job offer to come work for them. They promised us the moon and stars (in writing, too). Now, here comes my choice...

In my state, if I had turned down that job offer, I would have been DENIED UNEMPLOYMENT, no appeals, nothing. So, my choice was 0 cpl or 4 cpl. I took what I could get until I could move on.

Furthermore, as I said in my post, what I find unethical is that they're paying some MTs more than others simply because they can. I should also mention this information I have only just acquired, so I did NOT have that choice at the time I accepted the job with the Q.

Think before you judge!
I think you judged first. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
You threw out the first judgment. And by the way, maybe those making 6 cpl have been with the same company for 20 years. I know I have, and yes, I should make more than you, who just started. I have given this company 20 years of my life. I do deserve to be paid more for that.
First of all... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
MT pay is determined by overall MT experience, not by how long you've been with one company.

Secondly, what about those MTs who've been with the Q for many, many years and due to the accounts they were working on being offshored, had their cpl reduced due to the new accounts? Hmh? This IS happening.

Again, THINK!
I'm not sure how they choose pay rates to offer people - I was bought too, at 6 cpl ASR
[ In Reply To ..]
I was offered exactly what I made at the company they bought me from 10/6. Had they offered me less, I would have refused it and taken my chances with unemployment or finding a new job. Sorry, but I've worked a long time to get the line rates I'm at (not that they are spectacular, but better than a lot of people are getting)..... and I'm not taking a pay cut to work for the crappiest company around.

BUT, I also have the luxury of having a husband who makes a lot better money then me, so I could have told them to stuff it and not lost my house, etc. while looking for a new job. I realize not everyone is in that position and may have to settle for what they can get. Which sucks, because when people accept it, it boosts mmodals power to bring down the pay for all of us. Not sure what we can do about it at this point.
depends on their contract w the client & how much client is willing to pay - nm

Pay rate - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't even know what I make per line anymore. Where can I find it? I looked on UltiPro but didn't find anything.

It's there in Ultipro - downtime

[ In Reply To ..]
Hover over Myself, then straight down below that where it says Compensation.

I am a pretty good MT and used to make over $40k, - bye bye birdie

[ In Reply To ..]
Last year was $28k working full-time as hard as possible. I left. Good luck.

Pay rate, etc - redmaj

[ In Reply To ..]
I have been an MT 35 years. My last hospital job was 17.85 per hour, plus bonus, plus great benefits. I would love to know what the hospitals are paying MModal (or any other company). Is is really cheaper not to have in house MTs It is hard to believe they are saving money, plus in house MTs get to know the docs, the work like the back of their hands. I dont work full time anymore, but even if I did I would have to kill myself to make 40 grand a year.

PAY RATE - Nature

[ In Reply To ..]
Hospitals have to pay insurance, and it just about eats their lunch unless they have a lot of employees and can get a discount. I am sure that MM gets a big discount from the insurance companies. I too use to be inhouse, but quit to become a home MT. I use to make close to $30 an hour, and my bring home pay was over $3000, being single. Those days are gone now and will never be coming back. When I first was testing for companies, I tested for MQ, and they wanted to hire me. I investigated their company, and turned them down. I found a wonderful company who treated their MTs like gold. They would always tell us "We are nothing without our MTs." Well, MQ bought them out, and here I am. I remember when we only got 3 PTO days a year and no holidays either. Times are tough, and we have to learn to bite the bullet.

Depends if you want a life - North MT

[ In Reply To ..]
It is possible to make 40K plus but you have to be willing to work OT every time it is offered and take advantage of the incentive weekends. Some just work another job instead of chaining themselves to this company 24/7.

I don't do OT because - notsaying

[ In Reply To ..]
because I have a second job. I make 40K with MQ and 15K with a PT job. No, I don't have a life, my husband is dead, my daughter lives 1000s of miles away, and I'm just plain not sociable. I don't get a lot of fill-in-the-blank op reports. I took speed reading for college and I really prefer ASR. I have arthritis in my thumbs, but I read REALLY REALLY FAST.

I don't care how fast you flippin' read when your - ASR is so bad you are

[ In Reply To ..]
correcting every other word and cannot use F11 for threats of getting fired. If you are just "reading fast," then you have one of those cherry accounts; however, most of us do not and there is no possible way to make $40k a year. When will you guys learn? I am not lazy, I am not stupid, I have a horrid account, I know all the short-cuts, the money just ISN'T POSSIBLE -- even if you make 10 and 6 as I do. This last year I fell under $30k per year. There was no OT on my account. I not only did NOT have a life, I wanted to end the one I had. I quit.
When I can't make 40K here, I'll quit too. - notsaying
[ In Reply To ..]
Actually, I'll retire. I used to make 63K a year. It's not like I'm really happy about 40K. It's just what I make.

office.  I used to come back to this board all the time.  I find I come here less and less.  It has been a while, but I notice everything seems exactly the same and once again I am glad I made the choice I did.  Keep looking for jobs and take them no matter if you do have to get dressed and drive to an office and pack your lunch.  It is worth, worth, worth it.  Sorry for those still struggling and those who have NJA.  I really am.  Been there.  ...

New Year, New Me!

I am checking out my community college catalogue and getting excited at so many interesting courses.  I'm not looking for a long, drawn out process or degree, just some subjects that will be fun, creative and could also translate into making me more marketable.   As an MT, I lean more toward writing, computer, and maybe even something medical, as opposed to something like car mechanics or accounting.  Any ideas?     ...

With The New Year Need To Think About
Jan 01, 2013

I spent the morning reflecting and trying to figure out what to do and where this profession/company is heading.  In doing web searches found that MModal is opening up yet another center in Mysore, India and hoping to employee 500 employees.  I guess I am trying to figure out if it is indeed cheaper to employee Indians than US based employees after all the perks the Indians get like healthcare for the whole family including parents until they are 80, gym, free transportation, the cost ...
