New year, new me! - js

Posted: Jan 19, 2011

I am checking out my community college catalogue and getting excited at so many interesting courses.  I'm not looking for a long, drawn out process or degree, just some subjects that will be fun, creative and could also translate into making me more marketable.   As an MT, I lean more toward writing, computer, and maybe even something medical, as opposed to something like car mechanics or accounting.  Any ideas?

Technical writing is something I would like to take - IMANMT2

At the juco level I found two separate classes. One was mainly business correspondence but the other class offered seemed to be more of what I was looking for. There are websites (can't remember them now, of course) where you post for jobs. odesk is one. There are a couple of others. LinkdIn or something like that might provide a business connection.

Software development and network administration (microsoft certified) are two jobs you can do from home. But they would require a lot of time to learn them, you may not want to spend that much time on it. Software writers/developers/QA have been impacted by the Indian market.

Thanks for that input! - js

the technical writer course looked interesting to me, as well as grant proposal writer. (Also screenwriter, but that may be definitely a hobby type job!) Something called medical record auditor sounded interesting as well (does anyone know what that is?).

I am not so sure I even want to work at home any more. I was in Penny's the other day. They had so many beautiful clothes (cheap too after the holidays) and I had this fantasy that one day I would have a job where I would have to wear nice clothes again LOL!

requires them to look nice. They do! Your plans sound wonderful, JS. I'm getting old and lazy these days, but I've gone back to school three times in my life and it always paid off big time. Plus, I just enjoyed the working of myself into something new and exciting so much.

With The New Year Need To Think About
Jan 01, 2013

I spent the morning reflecting and trying to figure out what to do and where this profession/company is heading.  In doing web searches found that MModal is opening up yet another center in Mysore, India and hoping to employee 500 employees.  I guess I am trying to figure out if it is indeed cheaper to employee Indians than US based employees after all the perks the Indians get like healthcare for the whole family including parents until they are 80, gym, free transportation, the cost ...

Aug 17, 2013

My daughter will be driving and I can leave transcription/editing !   I just hope there is enough work to last that year.  I love working at home.  I've worked with some mean office women before who are backstabbing and downright evil, but at least I had security in my paycheck and paying my bills.  This job has been great as far as being home with my daughter when she gets out of school and being home when she is sick, but now she is older and when she starts drivi ...

Here's To The New Year -- More BS
Dec 30, 2013

Besides issues with a company that seems to have workflow problems and therefore tells the independent contractors to not work on their scheduled days because the work is low or on another day is sending e-mails that there is extra work and everyone needs to hustle , there is now a notice that there will be an adjustment in line rates.  Of note, this company does not pay the highest line rates to start with. They want a schedule and we're expected to be available AND must produce a min ...

Do You Any MTs Making $50,000 Or More Per Year?

Does anyone know personally of any MT who makes $50,000 a year or more?  A college recruiter called me at home one night and asked what I did for a living and when I told her I did not make that kind of money she said "I was told most MTs make around $50,000 a year.  Only in my dreams.  LOL.  ...

Happy New Year?
Dec 31, 2009

Just now got notification (New Years Eve) that there will be a new service area South right after the first of the year (figures, right?)  I know this happened to the North region about a month ago.  We will have a new DQS log-in and have to move our expansions over.  Can anyone from the North let me know what this means?  Will we still be doing our regular book of business?  Is it time to look for another job?  ...

Another Year Of Benchmark
Sep 19, 2011

Medquist is very close to signing up for yet another year of Benchmark.  So very few people use it and the corporate people are trying to find out why.  Seriously.  I wonder if they will listen this year when we tell them that we don't want it, don't use it and it is a colossal waste of money.  I already let my CCM know why I will never sign up for AHDI, I mean Benchmark.  Some of us old timers have a bad taste in our mouth over the lawsuit settlement and ...

That's right!  If you are working FT as an MT and are NOT making at least $70,000 per year, you are either: * Lazy/Not ambiious or determined enough.  Your skill set is low and you haven't beefed it up with extra classes, etc. because you are INDOLENT. * Stupid/Sloppy:  Your quality sucks, your work is rife with errors, you are not a "perfectionist." *  You are a loser with low self-esteem, otherwise you would be commanding and getting 0.12 per line for your ...

PTO Rollover To Next Year
Dec 07, 2011

I had asked previously asked about PTO hours that could be rolled over to the next year. I got an answer of 40 hours if MT/MME, but someone else posted something that was just stuck in the back of my head.  I too had lost hours that I "rolled over" previously for a big vacation (it is still a family joke to this day).  On looking further found the below in the employee manual (HR section on MQ Central): MMEs who were formerly Quality Assurance Specialists as of June 30, 2009 and who ...
