Business license for ICs - wondering

I was informed that I need a business license to work for a company as an IC. My city, county, and state do not require a home-based business that files a schedule C with their tax return to have a license if they do not sell items to the general public and the only employees are family members. Can they cancel my contract for not having a license?

In my state and city it is required, and I also require it for any subcontractors now due to the extremely low-quality work that comes in and as required for my business license (which states I can only use licensed subcontractors). I have to pay city taxes as well as all others.

At the very least you have to register for an EIN these days.

I never have. Working as IC up until one month ago using SSN and my name. - get a 1099. Never had to get an EIN. s/m

I pay all federal taxes, and taxes to my state. Over 25 years, at it, never was told to get an EIN.

I have been an IC for 13 years and this has not ever been asked of me. I pay my taxes quarterly and have a very good CPA who knows what he is talking about. I'm sure different states have different rules, so good luck! IC in Iowa

You need to check with your local government or an accountant to see if you need a license for your state or your city. I need one for my city but not for my state. The EIN issue only applies to employers, so if you hire anyone, you will need an EIN, but not otherwise. Your SSN is good enough if you have no employees. Perhaps the company you are signing on with requires a license from you so that they can prove that you are an IC and not an employee for their own records. I would just tell them that you don't require a license where you live and see what they have to say.

That is all you should need - easy to obtain, you get online and fill out the info and have a number within 5 minutes. I have one but have not had to use it as an IC yet - good to know it's there though, as you never know from company to company what they might require.

Ran into this same problem, got a DBA doing business as - this works as well cost $26, sm

go to your county clerk. Had to have the paperwork notarized which cost about $5 and went to a bail bondsman who have notaries and got it down across the street from my courthouse. It took me about 25 minutes to fill out the paperwork (1 page) walk across the street and have notarized, come back to the county clerk's office and then have it stamped and recorded.

having to go through a bunch of crap. If you have a business license, then they are covered and don't have to prove they treated you as an IC. It's for the employer's benefit. If they want you to have it, then I would assume this would mean they will not use you if you don't.

The same thing happened to me. I was working for a very small company with one owner. One day she told me I had to get a biz license or I would lose my job.

I called my state, the IRS, the county, the city, everybody told me the same thing, the state of Florida does not offer business licenses for this type of work so that's what I told the lady I was IC'g for. She did not believe me, so for fear of losing my job, I figured I had better come up with something to show her, so not really knowing what I was doing, I just made up a name for my business and filed for a DBA under that name, made up some biz cards and a flyer and faxed those things to her.

That satisfied her enough, until a year later when she came back to me asking for a biz license again. So again, I told her FL did not offer them for this type of work, so then she asked that I type up who I called and got my information from, so I just typed up a letter and wrote the city, state and IRS with their phone numbers and I wrote down what they said and faxed it to her, and she left me alone after that.

I am currently an Exact-Med student. They give each student Speedtype. I had been using it, but my husband updated our Soundcard and then it said that my license for Speedtype was no longer valid.
