One good way to get out of this business. - Getting out

Posted: Mar 24, 2010

Fed up with it?  Also fed up with the usual job sites that repeat the same ones over and over?

Go to your state's Employment Commission web site.  Click on site for state job postings.  Put in your job criteria, and make sure you click the one that says G for General Public.  Put in full/part time, etc.  You can even select the county in which you wish to work.  When the jobs are posted you usually have 10 days to do an online application and can submit a cover letter with your resume, so you should check the site about once a week for any new postings.  Many of these jobs are in the pay range of $27,000 to $45,000, depending.  They post the job description and job qualifications, which are ALOT of WRITTEN, SKILLS, ORAL SKILLS, AND COMPUTER EXPERIENCE!!!!  Most of the time we are talking about Monday through Friday, all paid holidays, and state paid benefits!

This may not work for all, but many people would be happy to have that kind of job.  It may take a while but they are certainly not job scams.

Good luck to everyone in their pursuit of career happiness!

Great advice here. I went to look and see probation/parole officer openings near me. Maybe it's time to move to flip to the other side of the coin. I've been a prisoner chained to the sinking MT boat for way too long. lol

Parole officer? - Anonymous

I must be missing something; how does being a transcriptionist make you qualified to be a probation officer? MTs are awesome but a person needs to know their limitations.

it was mostly a joke. However, I do have a 4-year degree, and my DH is in law enforcement. I've heard every story there is out there, and nothing surprises me anymore. The bad news is that my DH has been furloughed 10 days this year with another 10 already announced for next year. I'm assuming other state agencies will face similar problems, hiring freezes, etc.

State jobs - Anonymous

I applied for one job through my state's web site, the application process takes a long time. Many of the jobs require relocation and while that may work for some it is not an option for me. My state has a hiring freeze now which means no new jobs will be posted. Your statement was pretty general, what do you mean when you say "that kind of job?"

In our state those jobs are being cut and/or furlowed - nm

Depends on the state. In CA, every year the budget isnt - balanced, workers laid off/furloughed, etc.

[ In Reply To ..]
There are several State MT jobs in my area that have been running ads for months - but I just don't want all the drama and mandatory unpaid "vacations" every summer when the State government sits on their butts and doesn't pass a budget.

All the above is why a state job would be more secure - Even during a recession

[ In Reply To ..]
They certainly are not going to be advertising for jobs they do not need. In this economy, for them to hire someone would be a serious employment commitment. If they did not feel like they could afford it, they simply would not fill the position with anyone. Besides, there are some jobs that you just can not do away with. I would tend to think those are the ones being posted. Just because a probation officer is the only thing you found today, check back every week. New ones come on all the time.

The turnover cannot be as bad as MTing. - Lesser of 2 evils. NM

People need to wake up and smell the coffee. The job market is bad, period, It does not matter where you work or what your occupation happens to be. It is not uncommon to have 400-500 people applying for the same job. Most of the states have budget problems, no job is secure these days.

The State MT jobs in CA are working inside a prison, - also with inmates. For 2K/mo. gross? Nuh-uh.

That was the only MT job available in my state as well, with the state prison system in some little town out in the middle of nowhere. Great pay, great benefits, an employees union but a place no one would want to live. No point in checking back for new jobs, with the hiring freeze there will not be any more.
So you will not even try? - No hope.
[ In Reply To ..]
How sad because you never know until you try. No one can improve their situation, if that is what they want, unless they try to help themselves. I became proactive, had a good attitude, and my life has changed; not overnight but it took 6 weeks. Perhaps you are one of the ones who does not want to make a move. That's great and good luck to you. Others are looking at unemployment income, low work, and wages gone south and need to do something.

I applied for the state job I was interested in, waiting to find out if I will be asked to test. You are not understanding what I said, there is a state hiring freeze which means they are not hiring anyone, for anything. I don't qualify for the jobs that are currently listed. No one is going to hire me for something I'm not qualified for just because I'm an MT. By the way, I've been trying to get an MT job for 3 months but with 35 years experience I am not going to work at rock bottom wages with no benefits. I am going to school, looking to phase out my MT career because I will be forced to leave my employer of 16 years in 12-18 months due to Epic and VR. I am applying for non-MT positions with my current employer and hope to interview for one of them this coming week. How dare you say that I have not been trying.

Don't you just love when when someone says this!! - How Dare You!!!!!
[ In Reply To ..]
Like someone they do not even know could have said the one thing in the world that could insult them the most. And all over nothing. HAHAHAHAHA. Honey, if those statements could upset you that much to use language like that, "How Dare You!!!" you have many more problems besides your job.
Sorry - Anonymous
[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry, didn't mean to sound hostile but I found myself explaining over and over that there were no state jobs available where I live and the OP kept coming back saying that I should keep trying. Some days I just can't manage to say or do the right thing. Unfortunately there is no easy answer for any of us in regard to finding a job, hope the state thing works for those of you who have that option.

I posted the words of encouragement and did not mean to offend you.

Your apology is accepted, although none was necessary. I just wanted to tell you that I do not see many apologies on here. I am very impressed. You are truly a classy lady. Good luck to you.

2014 - Not A Good Year For This MT — But I Found A Good Fit (finally)
Jan 12, 2015

Rarely do I start discussion on mtstars - however, 2014 was a particularly challenging year for myself - an experienced MT/Editor (15+ years). However, I realize that many other MTs may be in the same position, i.e., having many years devoted to working at the Big MTSOs including รข€œthe M,รข€ and รข€œthe Nรข€ and (now to be included) รข€œthe Tรข€ following close behind in total numbers of MT/Editors on staff. The VLC - Are They Still In Business?!
Dec 22, 2009

I'm a student with The VLC online school.  I sent in 2 assignments 9 days ago and haven't heard back from them.  They've never been particularly swift reviewing assignments but this is getting ridiculous.  I emailed both the instructor and the general contact address and got Mail Delivery System messages to say that "delivery has been delayed.  Error: unable to reach nameserver on any valid IP."  Their forum site is down although the main web site is still ...

Going Out Of Business?
Jun 21, 2010

I hate the way things are going, MTSO lost their largest account.  I was promised the same amount of work with the 'other' accounts.  Had all but 7 short notes today.  I think I should just jump ship and find another job.  I am NOT liking the way things are going...Been doing this for a LONG time and I can tell when something is up.  Of course, I asked, they won't tell me the truth, they SELDOM do tell the truth of what is really going on. ...

Why Is It Anybody's Business?
Nov 18, 2010

I really resent the fact of being critiqued on how i transcribe/edit a report.  Why is it anybody's business if I use the mouse, keystrokes, or type it with my toes, as long as the report gets done?  I'm sure we all have different styles that work for us - so what's wrong with that?  This is carrying micro-management way too far.  ...

Greed In The MT Business
May 04, 2010

I believe greed has taken over the transcription industry.  If the client is charged so much per line, does he only have to pay half for voice recognition?  I doubt it.  The voice recognition should have been a tool for the transcriptionist to be able to produce a lot more lines . . . instead I believe it is so the higher ups can line their pockets with gold and stomp on the MLS.  Transcend is now sooooo greedy they are sending almost half of the work overseas at night.  ...

Anybody Else In The Letter Business?
Aug 30, 2010

The conglomerate I type for mostly (which is about 30 university clinics, each with 150 or so non-English-speaking residents) sends almost everything in "letter" form.  There is a useless letter standard, but I spend the first 1-2 minutes of the dictation on the address (and have to manually re-enter into the cc list), usually have to go Google to try to find how Dr. Swishandswash spells his name and address in Podunkville.  It is killing me.  There must be some way to stream ...

Rather Than Claim 'it's Just Business'...

Starting A Business
Jan 29, 2011

Hi. I am new to MT boards here but wondering about how one would start a home business. I have worked for companies as a subcontractor but wish to advertise for myself and get some work from local doctors on my own. I would likely need a mini transcriber if I have to pick up and drop off tapes, but how does one do it over the internet? INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

Call me naive, but I just saw a popup ad that seems to be advertising that the county where I live has 5 international offices.  I don't know why I'm surprised to hear this, but it seems pertinent to our concerns regarding offshoring.  Maybe we should learn how to join them if we can't beat them?  Maybe global marketing is the subject we all could profit from studying?? How Do They Stay In Business?
May 18, 2013

I've read post after post after post, in addition to having my own experience with Nuance and I really wonder how this company as well as M*Modal stay in business.  I guess even though people are quitting left and right or being fired for not having 99% accuracy, there must be more people waiting in the wings to take their places. I originally came from Transcend prior to the acquisition by Nuance and although I can't say that company was the best either, IMO, it was better than ...
