I live in Florida and am trying to obtain a business license for medical transcription. My county and city do not give them out and they tell me to call the State of FL, I have called about 10 different numbers and no one can help me. If there is anyone out there who has a business license for medical transcription in the State of FL, please let me know how you went about getting one.

If you are an EMPLOYEE you don't need a license because you're not running a business.

If you are trying to become an IC (cough cough really an employee) and they are requiring it, then I'd give them a business card with a business phone # on it and if that doesn't suffice, keep looking for a job.

I am an IC and have been working with/for this person for 3 years now and they are requiring that I get a business license at this time. I already gave them proof of a DBA (figure that's better than nothing), a business card and a flyer, but they still want a business license. I told them I am not required to have one in this state but they do not seem to believe that's true.

I really don't want to lose this job but it may come to that unfortunately. Thanks for your help.

I'm an IC but the company I've been working with for over 5 yrs suddenly required everyone to have an EIN last year. Took me less than 5 minutes to obtain one.

I also live in Fla and was told I'm not required to have a biz license unless I am providing a "tangible" good or have employees of my own. I also went through about a dozen phone calls to find out whether or not I really needed one.

Register your business name with the IRS and get an EIN. Sounds like they are totally misinterpreting some HIPAA/HITECH requirements :(

Well the company I work for is located in another state and I work from home in FL. And the company is assuming that because all their employees are required by their state to have a business license, that my state requires it also.

I actually already have an EIN and a DBA. I established both when I was starting the process of applying for a business license. Then after making a bunch of phone calls, I learned that they do not issue business licenses for this profession in FL.

I worked had my own business in three different cities in Florida and did not apply with the state, just the city in which I worked, no biggie. Maybe things have changed since the 80's. Good luck.

I really resent the fact of being critiqued on how i transcribe/edit a report. Why is it anybody's business if I use the mouse, keystrokes, or type it with my toes, as long as the report gets done? I believe greed has taken over the transcription industry. If the client is charged so much per line, does he only have to pay half for voice recognition? I doubt it. The conglomerate I type for mostly (which is about 30 university clinics, each with 150 or so non-English-speaking residents) sends almost everything in "letter" form.
