companies wanting independent contractors these days ? - Deb

Why are there so many companies wanting independent contractors these days ? Some of us need benefits !
IC WANTED - Because

The companies do not want to put out the time and most likely, money it would take for them to have the benefits for their employees. They are trying to get by cheap.

Just like the other poster said, it's a money issue. As an IC, they do not have to fork out money for unemployment, health benefits, vacation, holiday, OR TAXES. They simply pay you for the work you do, and nothing more. We supposedly have laws out there that give us rights to make decisions about "what we can charge" for our work, what hours we work, etc. However, I've been an IC for a number of years. If I want a day off and someone else has off who I would normally cover for, well then I am denied the day off. If there are only a certain number of us on an account and someone has off, another person cannot have off. This, despite the fact that as an IC you are supposed to be able to decide when you work, how long you work, and what you get paid. It does not work that way at all. Yes there are flexible time schedules wherein I don't have to work set hours as long as the work is done, but I still have to "ask" for a day off. In my opinion, these companies are making out big time by having IC's. They don't have to pay any benefits or taxes, and won't give you an increase in pay when you ask. This sounds like an employee situation. In the end, we stick around because it's brining in the bacon. We just have to bite our tongue and deal with it, and look at the bright side of it of doing our own thing during the day when we need to and finishing our work when we can... as long as it gets done.

Not to mention they don't have to pay the employer's portion of Social Security.

Exactly...and having to pay 100% of your own taxes is probably the biggest downfall of being an IC. But, the flexibilty in the schedule if you have kids...or not, is a big, big plus.

Also, if you lose your job, you can't collect unemployment, nor can you collect workmen's comp.
There is also no law that says a company cannot offer employees that same flexibility in schedule and, in fact, some do. I lived in a city where the city garbage collectors (who were employees with full government benefits and pensions) were given a route that, as soon as they completed it could go home, even if it only took them a few hours to do it. They were paid, however, a 40-hour work week.
This idea that somehow flexibility of schedule governs IC status simply is not true.

What? Who said flexibility of schedule "governs" IC status?? I merely said it is a big, big plus. While there may be no "law" that says a company can't offer a flexible schedlue, finding such a schedule as an employee is a little more difficult. My point of this all is, as an IC you get paid for what you do and nothing more, no perks, and you have to pay 100% of your own taxes. However, any expenses you may have in order to perform your job (computer software, Internet, paper, fax machine, electric, etc.) is all a tax write-off. It may not be much, but it is something. The flexibility of schedule is great.
Some of us prefer being an IC - just how it is

I prefer being an IC. I can and do set my own hours and technically a company cannot tell you not to have a day off. I like the freedom and wouldn't have it any other way. You can buy medical insurance, and set up a savings plan for retirement. You build that into the cost of doing business and always set some money aside specifically for those things.

If I get to the point of needing help, I will want ICs...why? It costs $$ to have employees. There's taxes, social security, unemployment, holiday/sick/vacation pay. That's just a few aspects of it. Oh the headache. I really don't think I could afford to have an employee.
I've always been an IC and wouldn't want it any other way. I determine MY schedule according to my needs. I also determine my volume. I also receive some GREAT tax benefits. My internet, computer, office supplies etc are written off taxes. Also since I am self employed, my health insurance premiums are taken off of what I make (decreasing my taxes). I also have an HSA which I contribute to and there's some tax benefits to that, but I could do that whether or not I was an IC.

What office supplies do you have other than your computer and internet? I tried being an IC for a year and my accountant thought I was crazy because you don't get all the tax benefits that I was told. If you work over the internet, you don't have gas to get the work to your employer or the paper needed to print out the reports.

If you work in your home and have an office area, you need to have electricity, you need to heat your office area, depending on what type of account(s) you work for, there may be things that need to be printed, so paper would be a write-off, pens, pencils, paper shredder, ink for your printer, phone, internet (as you mentioned), computer expenses such as getting repairs done...just to mention a few off the top of my head. True, it does not amount to a whole lot, but it is something.

How Do I Pay Other Independent Contractors?? Oct 30, 2013I am a self-employed medical transcriptionist. I work for a single practice as an independent contractor. Anybody Heard Of This For Independent Contractors? Nov 17, 2009In order to comply with the standards and criteria the Federal Government has set forth to determine who qualifies for IC status, MD-IT has designed a couple of very basic questions to see if an individual is eligible to be classified this way. 1. Is your business incorporated, a LLC, S-Corp, or Partnership, with a separate FEIN, or are you a sole proprietorship with a registered DBA (fictitious name)? If yes - can you provide evidence of such? (copy of registration ...

Independent Contractors And Nuance Jun 06, 2012When Nuance bought Webmedx they said they intended to keep the Independent Contractors. They have now "laid off" the last of one, with no notice. They were able to get around the 2-weeks notice by laying them off instead of officially terminating them. They talk about re-instating them "soon," but since Nuance has no other independents that the one they inherited with Webmedx, I certainly have my doubts about any reinstatement. ...
Should I Hire A Tax Pro Or Do Most Independent Contractors Feb 18, 2013This is my first year filing taxes as an IC. It seems over my head, but maybe just because this is my first time. I really would like to avoid the 250+ my local tax person wants to charge and apply that amount to the taxes I will be owing. So is it that difficult or should I just let the pros do it? Thanks ahead for any advice ...
Question For Independent Contractors Sep 13, 2014To the independent contractors out there...How much do you usually average per hour when being paid per lines? I just recently took a job a new company, what they offered in cpl seemed to be decent, but once I got working the software they use is extremely hard to get a good line count. It seems I just keep typing (and/or edit for the SR) away, but the lines take forever to add up. I think we are paid 72 characters for line, no spaces, no headers/footers, and you ...

What's With These Companies Wanting ICs But Jul 11, 2011telling you what hours they want you to work? Just saw the latest job posting. I could never work for a company like that. I mean sure you can ask me if I can do it but to tell me. If that company cannot afford to hire employees then you shouldn't be accepting hospital accounts. I am glad I work for a company that says, "We can't tell you what hours to work as an IC." It makes you feel respected. Isn't that illegal anyway? Can someone tell me? ...

Is This A Trend Amongst Companies These Days? Aug 31, 2011I have been looking for a better job for about 4 months or so. As of today, I have trained for 3 untenable situations. I won't name companies because my intent is not to slam a particular company, but to see if others are seeing a trend of companies saying anything (including lying) to an MT to get them to come aboard.

Wanting Out Dec 29, 2009I've been a MT for 10 years. Not long compared to a lot of people on here, but unfortunately for me it has become a nigtmare instead of the job I once loved. Same old sad story all over the country I suppose. I'm looking for some advice on other jobs that can be ...

Here's A Suggestion For Those Wanting To Know Jan 08, 2013Cheap, cheap, cheap. You should pay your peeps.
You could tell the clients NTS cannot keep up with work because people are jumping ship like rats from a hot fire.
Perhaps management (upper, way upper I mean) could explain instead of the TLs having to do it, that they needed so much money to take to the bank they had to cut the pay of all their employees, now they have green, not as speedy, uninitiated MTs doing the work. Most of the good ones have fled the scene.

Independent Contractor Means "independent" Contractor - Sm Oct 22, 2014I am so tired of these companies hiring for an IC position and then when you are not at your keyboard johnny on the spot at 11 a.m. every day to start your day and sometimes start at 12 p.m. or 12:30 p.m., they are calling your cell, sending threatening E-mails. Are There Still Young People Wanting To Do This? Jun 21, 2015As my mind wanders through the shift, I was thinking do the young people still want to do this for a living?
