What's with these companies wanting ICs but - rm
Posted: Jul 11, 2011
telling you what hours they want you to work? Just saw the latest job posting. I could never work for a company like that. I mean sure you can ask me if I can do it but to tell me. If that company cannot afford to hire employees then you shouldn't be accepting hospital accounts. I am glad I work for a company that says, "We can't tell you what hours to work as an IC." It makes you feel respected. Isn't that illegal anyway? Can someone tell me?
Like to know...work as an IC for a company on a "shift" - mtmt

Didn't used to be that way but then brought in another person helping run the place, a real wicked witch of the west type, and now you have to say which hours you'll work and you'll hear it if you are on an hour late.
This industry has done a 360 in just a few short years. - Hayseed

It just seems that is just how it is these days. ICs have to work schedules, scheduled employees have to work a strict pre-assigned shift, and long gone are the days of 24-hour turnaround times that made this job especially attractive for the ability to be able to hop on and off throughout the day whenever it suited the transcriptionist, just so long as your work got done.
All the little "perks" have all but disappeared. It was fun while it lasted though, you gotta admit! Now, well, not so much. Global economy...pffft.

IC/EMPLOYEE - IC MT

This is how these companies can still charge the same to the hospitals for our services yet avoid any responsibility employee taxes for example and get the work done still by making sure there are IC working oooh lets not forget you lose your job unless you have paid into your state unemployment you screwed also... the company has no burden at all... how this continues under the radar of the IRS and states blows my mind.
I had no problem working a shift although - rm

I like to get done early so I actually prefer a schedule but a flexible one giving you an hour or two window or even longer sometimes if necessary. I wouldn't be able to work for a place that is that strict. I always ask, "Do you go by lines or hours as long as I get in my quota?" Honestly, I have never worked a set 8 hour schedule. I just can't do it. I do a lot of shortcuts on my Shorthand and make a lot of normals so I average 325-365 lines an hour and I am exhausted after my 1600 quota. I have never been told I fall below QA at that speed and actually have been told I am at 99+%. Not bragging at all. Just trying to show that I can't possibly put in an 8 hour shift unless I get lousy docs that day of course. I can't believe they expect me to transcribe well over 2000 lines a day! At that rate I would be so burned out in a week! I never had a problem with some flexibility as an employee before. There are still some companies that just want to know how many lines you can commit too and I completely understand that so they know how many people to hire, that is if they care not to overhire. Yes things have definitely changed for the worst. I am interviewing right now and these companies want a set 8 hour day now. I asked a lady yesterday, "You want me to do 2500 lines a day since it is 8 hours?" She said yes!! It's ridiculous.
If this is what a "global economy" brings, then I'm - ready to move to Mars. - Meerkat

They cannot call you IC and make you work a schedule on their terms - mt
[ In Reply To ..]
All they can ask is if you plan on covering days, nights, or overnights. They cannot give you a set schedule to work, otherwise you are considered an employee. The rules done by the IRS are real cut and dry for anyone to understand. The reason these companies get away with it is because no one reports them.
Exactly. I totally understand them needing a - rm

general idea of when you will be working although with clinic I don't see why as long as you meet TAT. I do Acute Care though so I do look at it from their point of view on that since it's 24/7. I am glad you told me it is illegal. I thought it was and almost responded to a recruiter as such. Maybe I will start doing that LOL.
IC/set hours - MTDG

I have worked as an IC for over 10 yrs and have always been hired for certain hours. I find this interesting as we were let go as IC a while back from one of these wonderful conglomerates buying out smaller companies and we has set hours for 3 yrs. I guess I should contact IRS tmr fill them in on that lovely company.
thanks you made my night!

Wanting Out Dec 29, 2009I've been a MT for 10 years. Not long compared to a lot of people on here, but unfortunately for me it has become a nigtmare instead of the job I once loved. The last couple years with the change to SR has cost me approximately $10.00 per hour. I am the only income in my home raising 3 children, on the verge of losing the house... Same old sad story all over the country I suppose. I'm looking for some advice on other jobs that can be ...

Here's A Suggestion For Those Wanting To Know Jan 08, 2013Cheap, cheap, cheap. You should pay your peeps.
You could tell the clients NTS cannot keep up with work because people are jumping ship like rats from a hot fire.
Perhaps management (upper, way upper I mean) could explain instead of the TLs having to do it, that they needed so much money to take to the bank they had to cut the pay of all their employees, now they have green, not as speedy, uninitiated MTs doing the work. Most of the good ones have fled the scene.
And here's another rant: ...

Wanting To Leave MM? Here's My Story Jun 05, 2012I started back when it was DDI. Anyone remember that? We had 2 accounts, 1 primary, 1 secondary. We rarely were without work. Are There Still Young People Wanting To Do This? Jun 21, 2015As my mind wanders through the shift, I was thinking do the young people still want to do this for a living? Are these medical transcription schools still in existence and telling people they can make a wonderful living at this? I just wonder if, in the next 10 years or so, as the oldtimers (like me) retire or go work at Wal-Mart, what is going to happen in this wonderful career choice? Will they have to actually start paying a decent wage just to get people to do this? O ...

Wanting To Transition To At-home Transcription Mar 12, 2012Hi, I currently work full-time at a University Hospital in Iowa in the Department of OB/GYN and have been transcribing in this department for 8 years. I transcribe for the residents and since their notes are so detailed I have experience in typing about other medical conditions besides just gynecology/ob related. Wanting To Compare Contractor Rates Jun 20, 2012I'm seeing pay rates all over the place on this board and I'm just curious as to what others are receiving. I'm an independent contractor. I have a lot of psychiatric accounts but they only pay 10 cents a line (65 characters, of course). Because I'm a fast typist and the psychiatric work is easy, I easly make $30 an hour when I'm focused.I've ...
Former MT Wanting To Change Careers But Lost Jan 02, 2013Hello,
Worked as an MT from 1994 until 2010. Starting have problems with my hands in 2003. Becoming an editor saved my life in 2005 and was able to work on broken hands a couple more years. The editing became even more painful with changing every other word, pay went down, and I found myself with a repetitive stress injury (tendinitis). Lost my workers comp case, although doctor said injury was caused by being an MT for 16 years, however, judge wasn't hearing it as workers comp had ...
I Hope That Any Company Wanting To Advertise For A Job Here Mar 13, 2015will read this. If you are going to place an ad, at least state the pay rate. If you do not do that and someone goes ahead and tests, only to find out the pay is horribly low (7-8 cpl), you are going to have one very irritated MT who will tell others to stay away. Also, you need to state the platform and the computer specs! Otherwise, I am not going to waste my time even sending a resume much less testing. ...
