Wanting my own clients - MTdude

I am wanting to start my own MTSO and have my own clients. I need someone who has done this already to be sort of a mentor for me. If all you are going to say is "dont do it" or "it really sucks" or other stuff like that, please save it. I just need advice on how to get started, who makes the decisions in clinics and offices, and so on...

If you want to get clients, you need to put in the effort to find them. If it was as easy as having someone "mentor" you, then everyone on here would have their own clients. If you aren't able to figure that out on your own, you aren't able to run an MTSO. Sorry, just the facts.

These people must be new to this board. This was a common question years ago and those of us who have been long-time regulars remember that this board is EXACTLY the forum to ask this and receive helpful information.

Unfortunately, I can't help with this as I decided long ago not to have my own accounts. For me, I needed more flexibility such as vacations/time off/sick days, etc. and when you have your own accounts you are responsible for all that with no one to cover. I now work as an IC with a flexible schedule so that works for me.

Anyways, hopefully you'll get someone experienced (and kinder than those 'disliking' your sincere question) to help you out. Good luck!

Why people have told me to avoid this board at all costs..because you have people like this tool making wild assumptions about a person's work ethic and abilities simply from asking 1 simple question. Why should we? Many have spent years and money on education in order to understand the internal workings of medical facilities. As another poster said, pay a consultant for that info. It has nothing to do with being mean to a male MT. This is reality in the business world. He will need to pay a consultant and network extensively.

How about checking with the human resources department of hospitals and searching the internet for general business start up tips? Also, what about contacting other small transcription business owners in states other than yours and see if they'll provide input? Maybe you shouldn't fill transcriptionist positions from this site, eh, as you'll want positive attitudes?

but it was many years ago and I lost them one by one - most of our hospitals and local offices all use the big companies now - I do wish you luck. I made up flyers and went by each office personally. You could always try that - you'll know in a small period of time what they are doing in your community. I went back to work myself, in an office.

I think it is, or was, called The Independent Medical Transcriptionist, by Donna Avila Weil.

I have that book too. Some info may be a bit - dated, but I think its easy to -sm

substitute some things in the book for more modern equipment and/or circumstances.

For the most part, the book is great because it tells you about the nuts and bolts of running your own business, and the things lots of people don't take into consideration, such as the hours of unpaid work one has to do when not actually typing.

telling you what hours they want you to work? Just saw the latest job posting. I could never work for a company like that. I mean sure you can ask me if I can do it but to tell me. Cheap, cheap, cheap. You should pay your peeps. You could tell the clients NTS cannot keep up with work because people are jumping ship like rats from a hot fire. Perhaps management (upper, way upper I mean) could explain instead of the TLs having to do it, that they needed so much money to take to the bank they had to cut the pay of all their employees, now they have green, not as speedy, uninitiated MTs doing the work. It is extremely easily to apply for unemployment insurance. Medquist has not fought one single claim to date. I think everybody should start trusting the government a little more! Medquist got in trouble for legal reasons not because somebody said something bad about them. You have to train full time to qualify for TAA. I started back when it was DDI. Anyone remember that? We had 2 accounts, 1 primary, 1 secondary. We rarely were without work. I absolutely loved it and we ALL KNEW our accounts inside and out. Hi, I currently work full-time at a University Hospital in Iowa in the Department of OB/GYN and have been transcribing in this department for 8 years. I have a lot of psychiatric accounts but they only pay 10 cents a line (65 characters, of course). Hello, Worked as an MT from 1994 until 2010. Starting have problems with my hands in 2003. Becoming an editor saved my life in 2005 and was able to work on broken hands a couple more years.
