As my mind wanders through the shift, I was thinking do the young people still want to do this for a living? Are these medical transcription schools still in existence and telling people they can make a wonderful living at this? I just wonder if, in the next 10 years or so, as the oldtimers (like me) retire or go work at Wal-Mart, what is going to happen in this wonderful career choice? Will they have to actually start paying a decent wage just to get people to do this? Or will doctors sit there during the visit fiddling with the computer rather than giving actual medical care?

Still will be minimum wage.

I would not have believed I would be now earning minimum wage for this hard-sought medical knowledge I have invested so much time and energy in for 30 years. So sad.

Local school telling students they can make 50 grand with medical transcription - so I called them on it

Their smarmy comeback answer when faced with statistics of minimum wage and speech recognition was that if a person owned their own transcription service they could make up to 50K and that was where they were getting their number. I told them that if all I was going to make was 50K owning my own transcription business I would go into something else. Certainly not worth the thousands they wanted in tuition.

And no, young people are not going into this field. That is why Mmodal is in such a crunch. The majority of the workforce is retirement age or soon will be and they certainly are not finding qualified candidates quickly enough to replace them because there are none. The ones they do find jump quick as soon as they can find something better. That is why the remaining workforce is being squeezed.

but they do not anymore and they said it was because of the state of the field, which makes me happy because they should not be offering the class since there are no good jobs anymore

So glad that some of the schools are pulling these courses, as I don't see how anyone can make $50,000 a year transcribing here in the StateS. At least the schools not offering these transcription courses are being truthful about the state of the field now.

this job as a bridge to other opportunities. I took one of the online courses for MT, had it paid off before I even finished the course within a year, got a job at MM and now I am working on training myself to do captioning. the whole time I have been working from home and really can't complain since I have NO debt from college, and a vast majority of my friends are fresh out of college with loads of debt, still looking for a job or working a low income job like mine. I would only suggest this job as supplemental income, definitely not something I would consider making a career out of...but definitely works for the time being for me.

Cheap, cheap, cheap. You should pay your peeps. You could tell the clients NTS cannot keep up with work because people are jumping ship like rats from a hot fire. Perhaps management (upper, way upper I mean) could explain instead of the TLs having to do it, that they needed so much money to take to the bank they had to cut the pay of all their employees, now they have green, not as speedy, uninitiated MTs doing the work. It is extremely easily to apply for unemployment insurance. Medquist has not fought one single claim to date. I think everybody should start trusting the government a little more! Medquist got in trouble for legal reasons not because somebody said something bad about them. You have to train full time to qualify for TAA. They pay you while you train, but face it, at some point to go to school full time....you might have to quit the Q! Who you gonna trust? ...

I started back when it was DDI. Anyone remember that? We had 2 accounts, 1 primary, 1 secondary. We rarely were without work. I absolutely loved it and we ALL KNEW our accounts inside and out. Hi, I currently work full-time at a University Hospital in Iowa in the Department of OB/GYN and have been transcribing in this department for 8 years. Hello, Worked as an MT from 1994 until 2010. Starting have problems with my hands in 2003. Becoming an editor saved my life in 2005 and was able to work on broken hands a couple more years. If you do not do that and someone goes ahead and tests, only to find out the pay is horribly low (7-8 cpl), you are going to have one very irritated MT who will tell others to stay away.
