anonymous email - need help

Calling all techies out there. I want to send an e-mail to someone but I don't want them to know it's from me. Nothing nefarious or sinister, just need to be anonymous.

Can I just set up a yahoo or hotmail account or can it be traced to my IP address somehow?

from your computer can definitely be traced. It may take awhile for a non techie to do it, but can it be done? Definitely. Anything you do on that computer can be pulled up by the right person. Maybe send from a public computer?

You would also need to use a name other than your own because you will be asked for your name when you set up an e-mail account.

By definition, if you need to hide, it is close to nefarious. - Just sayin

If it was something like surprise birthday greetings, you wouldn't need to hide your internet address.

Pretty much anything else, tho, if you feel you must hide, is going to be not very nice.

Anonymous email to employer? Never a good idea.
Anonymous email to coworker with BO? Won't faze them a bit AND it's not nice.
Anonymous email to ex-husband? Possibly deserved, but not nice.
Anonymous email to husband's mistress? Justifiable, but still not nice.

Well, I'll amend that to say that whistle-blowing might be one exception, but you'd better be doing it to a reputable agency, not your employer.

Think about it long and hard before you do this. Most people slip up somewhere, even when they do hide their address. Folks can usually work out who it is by process of elimination.

Maybe anonymous is the way they need to go. I have received anonymous emails that I didn't care two hoots (nod to Halloween this month of October)who had sent it to me - the information or perspective or request (sometimes people ask questions or ask FOR things in anonymous emails) was no biggie, nothing I felt the need to track down, though apparently for the sender it WAS a big deal.

So not always question of nefarious versus nice motivation. Could just be a little privacy is desired...that no one's going to care to investigate on the receiving end.

Thanks to everyone. I have heard of anonymizer e-mail services. Just didn't know if they were legit.

And to Just Sayin - everyone on here is anonymous. Doesn't make their reasons nefarious.

a proxy will use an IP address other than your own so - yours will not be detected. sm

google it. It's good for anomymous net surfing. I think, tho, you cannot set up a "john doe" email account using a proxy IP, so emails would still be tracked to your computer address no matter what fake name. Sending from a library computer will tell them what city/state, neighborhood it came from.

As long as not illegal emails, just nasty personal ones (lol) - send from fake email from friends house. nm

something like "correction to previous" email regarding line rate increase.
