A community of 30,000 US Transcriptionist serving Medical Transcription Industry
I have been having to go to numerous doctor visits as of late because I got an inner ear infection complete with vertigo/severe anxiety/nausea. The doctors that I have seen are using EMR. I don't know if they are happy about this or not, but myself, as a patient (not even to mention as an MT) AM NOT. I noticed the appointment took a lot longer than it should have because the doctors were sitting there typing their notes on the computer and seemed more interested in getting it done than listening to me. On more than one occasion, I'd ask a question only to have the doc say, "oh, just a moment, let me finish typing this before I forget." And most were NOT fast typists by any means. I kinda "jokingly" said at one time when the wait was particularly long, "wouldn't this appointment take much less time if a transcriptionist did that for you." And she totally agreed and said she had no choice in the matter and did not like it but had to get used to it. I said it seemed like it was wasting valuable time. I didn't mention I was an MT (didn't want to go down that road and make her feel uncomfortable) but I did say I thought it was counterproductive and that I'm sure she could see more patients and I wouldn't have to wait in here so long.....she just apologized, as she thought that mainly I was upset at the wait time for myself, which was true, but also upset about the threat to my JOB. Sigh..........
I don't mind when my personal doctor uses EMR during my visit. I don't allow him to do it while I am talking, and that was accomplished by simply stopping talking when he turned his attention from me to the computer. He had to stop and turn his attention back to me before I would continue. It only took a couple of times doing that before he got the hint.
Now he has the nurse stay in the room and she does the inputting while he does the doctoring.
