How can I get more experience? - Kevette

I was working 40 hours per week as an oncology transcriber until the company I worked for was outsourced by Nuance. Now, I am trying to find another transcribing job that does not require 2+ years of experience. I only have about 15 months of experience in oncology. Does anyone have any idea of how I can get more experience so that I can eventually apply for jobs with 2+ years of experience? I am willing to work cheap just so that I can get that two years in.

You are way ahead of me in the experience, but I was wondering this as well. I am just finishing my courses on Transcription, and the jobs don't like very promising. I would work for less than half as long as I can get the experience. I don't think there is a price tag on it, but I don't want to be taken advantage of. Any ideas on gaining experience is golden!

Not sure what you have in mind, but as you can see from posts on these forums, many experienced MTs are working for 8/4 cents a line for transcription/editing or less, respectively, for acute care. That is bordering on minimum wage. If a company were to hire you at half those rates, they would be in big trouble with the Department of Labor. Try asking your school for help in getting a job. Maybe a local clinic? Wishing you much luck.

Hi Laurie. I know what you mean. I am almost willing to work for free for 6 more months so that I can say I have 2 years of experience. How can we possibly get experience if no one hires us? I hope someone gives us an answer soon.

You may want to double-check the experience requirement. It might say "...years experience in acute care or...years experience multi-speciality clinic work." As challenging as oncology is, it's still only 1 specialty.

For what it's worth, in my opinion, oncology is one of the tougher specialties, so congrats on mastering it!

Oh, yes, I tried very hard to get on with Nuance. The problem with them is that their job ads always say that you must have experience with ESL and I do not have that experience so I can't even apply. You know? I wish that they did not require that or that I could gain that experience somewhere.

to just transfer over to them. At least, that is what I thought they did. Have you asked your supervisor at work if they were taking the MTs currently working there on? I mean you have been working on the account for over a year.

The only way companies can get away with paying no money to less than minimum wage is to hire you for an apprentice position for experience. I do not know companies doing this, however.

Actually that is a great idea. Maybe I can convince someone to let me work as an intern. My daughter works for filming places as an intern to gain experience as a videographer.

On the jobseeker's board there's a job posted, something about longterm project. The job is transcribing jobs that are already typed, from PDF files into MS Word. I think that would be a great learning experience for you.

Also, I think I saw Inscribe takes newbies. Keep looking. You will find someone to hire you even with less experience. Find out if there is something locally that will help you out. Good luck.

There is a hospital in my area that has 2 jobs I am interested in, one is a records analyst and the other is a records clerk. I am definitely ready to start working outside of the home, but I fear my MT experience will not help me much in getting one of these jobs. I have been noticing that the experience level required to even get looked at for an MT job has went up. The 2 year experience mark has now went to 3 in most postings, and alot more postings are stating they want a minimum of 5 years. It is an up hill battle in an already hard market but with these kind of requirements I supose the seasoned MT's can rest a little easier and the newbies I guess can look for another line of work. I am trying to figure why I never get a call-back on job applications anymore. For instance I applied at one company who was advertising a week or so ago, I'm sure I did perfectly or almost so on the test, never heard from them, and yet now they are advertising again. it's the old question - how to get acute care experience that everyone wants - when none of the local hospitals are hiring for MT (I've checked). Hello, I got a certificate from Allied schools that I completed their course for MT. I was under impression that the certificate was so that I could say I was a certified MT. I was wrong I guess. I have been an IC for past 13 years with all local physician office accounts. As of July this year, I now have only one left due to the use of the EMR. While those of you are saying that EMR will not phase out transcriptionist..well that may be so, but in my experience it has already phased me out.
