I'm looking for a general consensus regarding two spaces at the end of a paragraph. Everywhere I've worked, this is considered "padding your account" to create more characters. However, one place I've worked is doing this and it doesn't sit right with me. I'm wondering if this is common and maybe my experience with it is just limited?

I'm curious to hear the opinions of other MTs.

I don't even know why you'd put one space at the end of a paragraph, let alone two. Why not just go straight to the hard return? I'm not judging, just genuinely perplexed. I never did this while learning to type on a manual typewriter, nor when learning word processing on a computer.

You said one of your accounts wants you doing this, is it something to do with the expander program?

The ONLY purpose of doing it this way is to add 2 extra "characters" to the count of each line. It serves no purpose OTHER THAN to increase character count and thereby increase line count. I was taught hard return at end of paragraph. PERIOD (no spaces) :D

I just read this and in the name of science flew through a report, in my usual style (speed is money!), and discovered that after every single period, no matter if there is a paragraph or not, my thumb instantly hits the space bar twice. I don't think I could stop doing it if I tried! Might need actual electric shocks to get me to rethink my thumb doing it automatically...it just happens!

I've been in this business, as well as worked in other jobs requiring transcribing of dictated material and all but one required 2 spaces after the period. My high school typing instructor was very, very adamant that 2 spaces is the correct way to separate sentences to preent a "run-on" affect.

if I didn't return twice then all the paragraphs would run together. Hence, why they call it a new paragraph. It is being set upon a line separate from the others to indicate that it is a new paragraph.

Like entire lines of spaces. I never could understand how they were getting these line counts and I couldn't come anywhere close..Until they told me to try it their way...Well I don't cheat and I never will. And they were caught and fired, AND, lost their last paycheck over it.. Should have been sued because it took a long time to catch them...But 2 lines after a paragraph, never heard of it being a problem.

If you go back to the days before computers, the typeface was Courier 10 (pica), and we put 2 spaces after the period. The switch to 1 space after a period occurred with the advent of the elite font (i.e. Times Roman), and the reason for that was to have a more balanced appearance of the lettering on the page.

I adhere to the original ruling UNTIL whoever signs my paychecks tells me not to.

I am not sure if this is going on with your accounts, but I have noticed on my primary that there are a lot of old reports in there, from days and days ago. A few weeks back my team leader said ignore those TAT times because they were pulling old stuff for "training." It started with DS, and now I notice that there are old H&Ps and Consults in there. Did anyone ever contact a hospital after your account was lost to find out where it went and you were still employed with the former MTSO that had the account. Concerned about doing this if the hospital were to contact the MTSO and still employed there but not overly happy anymore. I would rather keep this confidential until I at least find out if the new MTSO is even hiring for the account, etc. ...

I currently provide transcription to various speciality clinics using a call-in system for the dictation, typing in Word and uploading via FTP site. I was contacted by a hospital to do their transcription. They asked if my transcriptionists could type in their VPN program. Can anyone tell me how I would do QA on this then? This would be a new system to me and I really want the account. ...

Ouir BOB lost another large account and now there are too many MTs. So, about 8-12 are being moved. The account that I transcribe is going to be almost 100% ASR, and the account is being transferred to the Canadian MTs. Apparently the poor Canadians don't have enough work. They do, however, get free health insurance. Now we not only have to worry about the Indians, but the Canadians too. I can guarantee they are being paid less. ...

The doc has contacted me and we are to meet today at his office. He has such a heavy accent, I could hardly understand what he was saying. He is in need of a transcriptionist, and has 50 charts needing to be transcribed. Not sure what type of equipment he has as of yet, but obviously he must have some kind. How do I charge him. I thought about by the line at maybe 12 cpl, but his accent is so heavy, I am thinking it will take me a while before being productive ...

My company just lost a huge account. Since then I have not made much money at all. I am scraping to get by. After 10 years in the medical transcription field I am fed up. I have always worked on such great accounts for good money. Now, I cannot find something that is even average pay.
