New account help - akhan

Posted: Oct 14, 2009

So, I am trying to research per line rates in my area, and no one seems willing to open up about their rates. I have spoken with one woman from a local company who told me to give it up as I more than likely will never land an account and work for other established companies, also stating that I am not hiring right now, but you are more than welcome to submit your information. I replied stating to her that I am not a newbie as you say, I have been in this field since 2007, and wish to acquire my own account and who knows maybe I will get lucky.

Anyhow, anyone care to share with me what they think is reasonable rate? Also, how do you go about setting up an account to receive their dictations? How is NCH Express Dictate? I am think about using this software.

Thanks for any input.

OK, whether you are a newbie or not (by the way you ARE a newbie) my advice to you is forget it! You don't have enough experience, IMO to be out there trying to get your own accounts. Sounds to me like you need to do some research of your own on line rates and other things and not depend on just info from here. Also your attitude sure doesn't sound like one I would want to deal with if I were a doctor looking for someone to do my MTing.

Listen to these folks......you are a newbie and still have a few more years to go until you won't be considered as such.

Ok... we have something in common. We are both angry typers. Me, because the line rates have dropped tremendously since I started in this field. You, because you are new to this field and want to get your own accounts.

Truthfully, I do not think it is as easy as that. The BIG companies are paying 3 and 4 cents per line for editing. Therefore, you have to compete with that. If you charge 4 cpl, you will not make any money! You also have to think about Malpractice Insurance and Tax Issues, paying for all of your own income taxes, computer, programs, spellcheck, shorthand, foot pedal, headsets... the list goes on and on.

It does not matter what software you want to use, it matters what the client wants.

I think you need to calm down and gain more experience in this line of work. Two years is certainly not enough, even if you do not want to hear that.

Good luck to you.

I have almost three years of experience. I know it can be done as I have seen it done. Sorry I came - akhan

[ In Reply To ..]
You are still considered a newbie to everyone in the MT field. In my opinion, anyone with 5 years experience still has much to learn, and some companies will not hire with experience of less than 5 years. In your 3 years, how much experience could you possibly gain? How many different specialties?

I would not try to come across as "experienced" if I were you. Maybe some people do not think you know what you are getting into. There are MTs on here with decades of experience who are struggling, so maybe you did come to the wrong place. I do wish you luck and hope everything works out for you.
Stop being mean to her.... akhan please - sm

You most certainly can get your own accounts. Don't let bitter people say you cannot.

I have never used Express Dictate. However, if you are considering an FTP you might try HIPPO. www.vancedigital.com

The above site also has other options. Market yourself. Send out some flyers. Be willing to be flexible.

Never give up. Just remember that some people can be very jealous of the new MTs.

I often discourage people only because it's tough to turn a buck right now in this profession.

I've been doing this for over 20 years and I still say if you can market yourself, you might just get that account.

Good luck to you! You do no deserve to be talked down to on this board. Keep defending yourself and stand your ground with these bitter MTs.
Thank you so much. That is what I needed to hear. It does seem like other MTs on here are bitter. - akhan

I bought a box of cheap pens and taped my business card to them and stopped in a few of the offices around town. You'd be surprised what you'll find.

I know one thing is for sure, we don't get our own accounts by sitting inside our homes and doing absolutely nothing to find one.

I sincerely wish you very well, and please do come back and let us know how things go. I'm glad you're not giving up or giving in.... :)

Bitter MTs - mt30+
[ In Reply To ..]
The experienced MTs here are not bitter, but they are telling you truth. You may or may not get your account. But if you do get your account with that much experience, then the dictator is just looking for a "cheap" MT. Most practices won't look at you iwth that little experience. I realize there are some exceptions but that is the minority.

If you don't want the truth,t hen why ask the question?

She doesn't need more experience, she needs to market herself.

Why do people act like this? It's nonsense. There are so many opportunities if people would just get out there and try.

There are accounts still out there; they've not all gone by big companies. Big companies take big accounts, but no one has said anything about the little guy. How about that one physician internal medicine practice? What about those?

geesh... you people are gloom and doom day in and day out....

This MT has a right to work just like anyone does in this field.

I have a lot of experience and I still have a lot to learn. I'll probably do this another 20 years and learn even more.

No one is perfect, not even the dictators. Cut this MT some slack!

I think it is interesting, in this industry as well as others, that just because someone doesn't have 5+ years of experience means they can't do as good a job as someone who does. Does anybody ever think about natural talent? Other background factors/knowledge? Actual performance level? Test scores? Kinda sucks to be judged just because a certain amount of time hasn't passed. I'm currently going through an MT program, but am starting to fear being able to get work when I finish. I'm really going to have to prove myself! All I can say to you, akhan, is do your research, work hard, and ignore negative people. Maybe you can get one of those books about starting up your own MT business. Don't know which ones are actually helpful or not, but it's a place to start at least. And are you a CMT? You should be able to get certified if you have over 2 years experience, right? Probably would help.

Your post is dead on... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It's sad to see the experienced MTs not even giving any good advice. Those same experienced MTs want advice on companies they plan to hire on with though and expect a response. Shame on them.

I do have a lot of experience but I had to start somewhere.

These huge companies were not built overnight. They started out small and then started buying smaller companies to help with the growth.

Everyone deserves a chance. It's a shame this OP has to put up with the banter from people who have nothing better to do than focus on the years of experience.

Sometimes it's funny but I often wonder if too much experience is a bad thing right now. A new MT has a new mindset, new goals, new dreams... It can happen, maybe not overnight, but a new MT can make this work for them.

Putting up with banter? No one was answering him. He was doing it all. - Reading the posts

He came on here, posting was slow. He asked a question and when not immediately answered then he came back with a less than thoughtful question about what, no one answering? People not wanting to share? I see other postings on here that never have an answer. He seems very impatient to start off with. That plus the fact he has only 2 years and I say only because like others have said, people on here have double, tripe and quadruple that amount and still having trouble finding enough money to make a living, seems like he has a big chip on his shoulder. Coming on here demanding from others does no one any good because they usually then give the cold shoulder. Winning friends and influencing people would be a good place to start, not putting forth a demeanor that is snippy.

From the time you posted your first time you waited an entire hour before you came back with what was the matter, people being secretive. You sounded demanding and I understand why people come on with negative. You put it out there first. Starting off 1 thing to have would be a little tact. That gets you going somewhere, not demanding replies.

you are truly looking for some input from people who are matured in this job and not having spent just a year or 2 doing this type work. My feathers are not ruffled by you or anyone else that I can think of. You on the other hand came on like gangbusters expecting people to drop whatever they were doing at the moment and answer your little whim. I read it when it first came on and then again when you posted an hour later, yes, an whole hour later. I think with the amount of experience, 2 years, you have, you are going to have to learn quite a bit and I donĂ¢€™t mean in what kind of system you need to use. Still green behind the ears and I will go on a limb and say probably will not get that first foot inside the door.

3 years in the business, and demanding attention and answers with a major attitude... not a very good foundation for a successful MT business. Not worth the time answering.
You people amaze me! - how professional is that?
[ In Reply To ..]
All of these nasty replies to the OP are from MTs who are jealous. Cut this OP some slack. You all need to take some coffee breaks and stop bantering this OP. If you don't like what she has to say, the move on.

You would be the first one to complain about a negative post to your original post but you are adding absolutely nothing to this thread other than to get your jollies off that you have more experience.

It doesn't matter how much experience she has; what matters is that she is trying. I applaud her for that. Someone needs to be a ray of sunshine around this board! You GO akhan! Yes I've already commented in this thread in a positive manner and I intend to keep on doing it, too.

These burned out MTs make me cringe. I've been doing this for 20 years and I don't feel compelled to come on here and blast this newer MT. Why do you?

Sometimes it's a matter of being in just the right place at the right time. If you market yourself well, you might just get a chance; and if you do well once you get your foot in some door, that can open the door for more work. But be prepared to compete for work with far more experienced MTs. If I were hiring, I would be far more likely to give consideration to the MT with a longer resume. That's just a fact of life.

Yes, some of us ARE just a wee bit bitter. Speaking strictly for myself, I try hard not to be, but I've been doing this for 37 years, in multiple specialties, and it was very hard for me to find a job just one year ago when my last employer closed his practice. And when I did finally find a job, I had to take a whopping huge pay cut because the pay scales have dropped so drastically.

Most other careers, you get paid MORE the longer you're in it. Not this one. Again I try really hard not to be bitter, but I completely understand and sympathize with those who are. We've worked our tails off for all these years, constantly upgrading our skills--and then we're offered wages the likes of which I haven't seen since the Reagan administration--and back then, my monthly living expenses were about one-third what they are now.

And yes, despite the lower wages, I am staying in the field because I like what I do, and it's worth a lot to me to be able to stay home, especially with the gas prices these days, and not have to deal with office politics and all the traumas and dramas that come with them.

I totally understand your point of view. I wish others would have so nicely explained themselves tha - akhan

Line rates depend on where in the U.S. you are - sm - XXX

[ In Reply To ..]
presuming you are in the U.S. I know of a lady charging 0.13 in northern VA, which for your own account I good, but if you plan to hire MTs then you will have a low profit margin obviously since you will need to pay them 7 or 8 cpl at least, possibly more if you want someone you know is good and reliable since the is kind of important. I have been asked my rate and turned down at 0.10 cpl which is more than reasonable, and that was picking up tapes. So if you want to know what people at charging I suggest you call the doctors in your area and ask what they are paying, easiet way to get the skinny on the going rate in your area. As for your 2+ years experiene, yes it can be enough but it also depends on what you did for those 2+ years. In my case while I had ad good amount experience at 2+ years (I did everything I could get my hands on and learned multiple specialities, though I have not done them all), I did not felt ready to tackle my own business. I did get a small acount a few years ago but have not as yet tried branching out myself though I will one of these days. Just don't rush into it too soon is all I can say.

Thanks for the info. Good idea on calling the docs. - akhan

Line rates do vary in different parts of the US. I have lived in PA, MD, GA, AR, and FL. Those places have ranged from .07 to .12 cpl. I have a friend in CA that makes .19 on average. So, it really does depend.

I started out with 2 years of part-time Hospital experience and then started my own accounts after that. It was actually pretty easy for me. I sent out business cards and fliers and never seemed to have any trouble landing one or two accounts where ever we were living at the time. Granted, that was starting back in 1995. It is a bit more competitive now, but it can still be done. Go after the little guy first. (One to four doctors per office).

Don't get discouraged. I was told when I started that for every 100 fliers/cards you hand out you may get one reply.

I wish you the best of luck!

Very informative! Your start-up story sounds like mine. Thanks. - akhan

If you're going to be working for yourself, I have a friend that also does and she charges .15 per line. She picks up tapes and delivers them back, but all work is kept on CD's so there's no printing.

Newbie - gourdpainter

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been in MT a very long time. I wouldn't necessarily call someone with 3 years experience a "newbie." I've seen people with 20+ years experience that had the capability of someone with a couple months experience and I've seen people with less than a year that took to the profession like a duck takes to water. MT is either something you can do or you can't. Years in the business makes us more knowledgeable but doesn't teach us research and learning skills.

As for line rates, I think they are rock bottom everywhere. Do you have a local hospital? You might talk with them or some physician office managers about their outsourcing and find out what they are paying. It is doubtful that anyone who is a competitor will give you this information.

Best of luck to you.

Thank you for info. I am responding to positive posts. - akhan

[ In Reply To ..]
I read online to call local MTSOs, but seems like you said; not willing to give any information. Someone else suggested to call local doctors and see what they are paying. That seems like the most promising way. Thanks!
