my own account - branching out

I am in discussion with a doctor's office to do their transcription. This would be the first time I would have my own account. How do I find out the going rate of transcription in my area? I would like to be prepared when discussing this with the office. Thanks in Advance!

12 cpl (65 character line with spaces). This was in the Intermountain West.

It was wonderful, until they decided they would rather have a machine do it. I got canned with no notice after I had been with them for over 10 years.

That sounds about right, 12 cpl, but you do have to consider your area. You could likely do that by just considering where you live. In other words, places like NY City and New Jersey pay much more than, say, most of Florida. Go to salary.com. They have a little color-coded map that indicates whether the state pays below the national average or above the national average.

That being said, very good luck to you. You do need to have in your head that the clinics and such are going point and click or speech recognition faster than a big hospitals are.

I would think if you could even find just one to let you know what they charge would be good.

If not, I would think 13-15 cpl is pretty much the going rate. I used to charge 15 cpl but I had to pick and drop off tapes, print, etc. If you're going to do everything online, 13 cpl might suffice.

I would ask for samples, etc. You could always say "I'm asking 15 cpl until I get a feel for your account and we can revisit it as I gain more of an idea of your reports." You could even say maybe 3 months. I think you'll find they will pay you pretty much what you're asking. I was surprised how many office managers really don't know the going rate as it's just not something they have to deal with a whole lot.

The other thing you could do is provide them with a really quick TAT and really sell your skills. After you say the price, start listing what this includes, i.e., STATS, faxed reports, storage of their documents.... things like that go a long way because when you say that to them they hear "free" but in essence, your price would cover it as certainly there won't be tons of STATs or fax requests. You might get a fax request if something gets lost and they need you to re-send it.

The going rate in Southern California for small independents is 10-12 cpl, 12 cpl being surgery center work and 10 cpl for physicians' offices. When I attempt to go any higher than that, I do not get called back, and I have a good reputation for high-quality work. This is for call-in dictation with TAT within a few hours/that same day. Most want it for 8 cpl, but I will not go lower than 10 cpl for easy dictators, 11 for harder.

I am not sure if this is going on with your accounts, but I have noticed on my primary that there are a lot of old reports in there, from days and days ago. A few weeks back my team leader said ignore those TAT times because they were pulling old stuff for "training." It started with DS, and now I notice that there are old H&Ps and Consults in there. Did anyone ever contact a hospital after your account was lost to find out where it went and you were still employed with the former MTSO that had the account. Concerned about doing this if the hospital were to contact the MTSO and still employed there but not overly happy anymore. I currently provide transcription to various speciality clinics using a call-in system for the dictation, typing in Word and uploading via FTP site. I was contacted by a hospital to do their transcription. They asked if my transcriptionists could type in their VPN program. Can anyone tell me how I would do QA on this then? Ouir BOB lost another large account and now there are too many MTs. So, about 8-12 are being moved. The account that I transcribe is going to be almost 100% ASR, and the account is being transferred to the Canadian MTs. Apparently the poor Canadians don't have enough work. They do, however, get free health insurance. Now we not only have to worry about the Indians, but the Canadians too. I can guarantee they are being paid less. ...

The doc has contacted me and we are to meet today at his office. He has such a heavy accent, I could hardly understand what he was saying. He is in need of a transcriptionist, and has 50 charts needing to be transcribed. Not sure what type of equipment he has as of yet, but obviously he must have some kind. How do I charge him. I thought about by the line at maybe 12 cpl, but his accent is so heavy, I am thinking it will take me a while before being productive ...

I have always worked on such great accounts for good money. Now, I cannot find something that is even average pay.
