OOW Survey - MaraschinoMary

Posted: Feb 02, 2011

I am interested in learning how many currently practicing MTs struggle to get their lines in due to their being "no work available."

Do you find yourself out of work and having to try to make up lines outside your usual schedule?

Only occasionally? Often? Every day? Seldom? Never happens?

Thanks everyone!

Mary

To answer your questions:
1. Yes, I do. For example, I am scheduled to work 9-5 (company's choice... not mine believe it or not). This morning, I got up at 6 a.m. to check for work. Started typing when work available at 7:00. Ran out at 10:00. Nothing available until 2:45 (checked every 15 to 20 minutes or so) and typed until now, about 4:45. Will continue to check until I get my 8 full hours in (if the work is even there to do so).
2. This happened occasionally until the holidays. It now happens DAILY!

Optional Data: I was just hired toward the end of 2010 (laid off earlier in 2010 due to OS) to work on a "busy account." Still searching for new job.

Wow, I didn't realize so many companies overhire and so many MTs are struggling. The MTSO I work for has plenty of work available. I'm just PT, usually 20-25 hrs/wk, but could work plenty more if I wanted. E-mails are sent at least once a week that OT is offered to full-timers or extra hours for the part-timers for those who want them. I actually had to get call-waiting to screen the calls because they were calling so much for extra help. I have been with this company since the beginning of 2010 and it has always been this way. Starting pay is above average and I actually have pretty decent dictators for the most part. I have no trouble making 20+/hour with them. I guess I should consider myself very fortunate.

It's not always overhiring people! If there are no patients, there are no reports. - sm

The dumbing down of this profession continues. There are times when there is NO WORK...deal with it.

DUMB easy mgmt answer - MT broke

[ In Reply To ..]
So EASY for someone in mgmt. to say that -- easy to tell when a salaried/bonus mgmt pops up with their short/sassy posts in response to the NO WORK problem. OVERHIRING IS THE ANSWER, which is all due to mgmt's GREED, as their salaries only GO UP and UP! and excellent benefits to boot! Whether they get their "lines" or not.

TOTALLY RIDICULOUS ANYMORE~!
LOL...when someone dares disagree with someone else - sm

they are labeled management or a suit. Sorry, just another MT who makes their line count, makes a decent living and doesn't groan and complain about my MTSO and understands the ups and downs of the business. This is a watered down profession that is full of women who thought they could strike it rich while working at home and don't treat it like a real job. Many of the MTs who work from home couldn't handle a hospital job, too much responsibility and work ethic expected.

really dumb management response if that's what you're goin' for. Good job! So, you say that you're just another MT so on and so forth... well, just wait. The time will come when you're sitting with NJA. It has nothing to do with work ethic or whether the MT is male or female... you'll see. And when the time comes, and you go to look for a hospital job, you'll find that there aren't many out there. Good luck.
Sadly, so true, SM. I'm very embarrassed by the "Meism" and by the - sad lack of ethics and understanding displayed

by many. Watering down is a nicer term than most for the influx of the feckless into this field after working at home became possible. And the noise from those who've discovered working at home involves the same unrelenting and tiresome demands as any other way of making a living. I've never seen this constant complaining in any other line of work I've done.

Finished with my own rant. OP, regarding your question, having to flex widely to make my lines as a result of NSA messages was a bother for me most of last summer and into the fall, but there's been plenty of work lately.

Regarding OOW, it's sensible to keep in mind that some companies try to be as fair as possible in allotting work, others have pets and treat them as pets, but most do assign accounts and jobs to keep their best workers fairly happy and stable. Assigning less work chronically to some without informing them is also used as a cruel and too frequent way of accepting a resignation in advance.
Yeee Gads, Man, you've lost your mind!!! Obviously your ethics - have nothing to do with your own conduct

MTSOs don't overhire to meet ridiculous TAT. It's just that there are no patients... bad weather... it's the holidays. I forgot Valentine's Day is right around the corner, so of course there will be no work.

Oh wait... is it this one (and I just love this one): The MTSOs are forced overhire because of all the horrible lazy MTs who don't show up for their shift (and then they just forget to fire them)? All companies should be run like that! Hire in bulk and let them sit there... just in case someone decides to not show up. Everyone would be employed... just going BROKE.

yeah, if there are no - sm

patients, then I would call that bad management on their part. It's the hospital's business to predict how many patients will be admitted per day. I'm sure the hospital and/or MTSO have all kinds of statistics on those numbers, down to the day of the week and even time of day. Hospitals do staffing based on data they gather over time.

The reason there is no work lately is absolutely because of the MTSOs overhiring in to turn around these reports as soon as they come in, and it has been going on for years. Those of us who have been doing this for a long time have seen the feast and famine many times. We know when the slow period is, and I am one who doesn't accept it when the MTSO just shrugs their shoulders and acts surprised. Gee, there must be no patients in the hospital - that's poppycock!

This time period currently with the bad - sm

weather is the only time in the 3 years with my company we have had no work, and this now is because of the blizzard conditions where all of my accounts are. It is not the MTSO's fault, people just cannot get out, even to the trauma center I work for.

Just read through the survey without answering the questions.  Waste of time!  No matter how many of us answer it and regardless of what we say, after it is all over they will tell us that MQ employees love the company.  This is just a way to try to placate us and make us think that our opinions count.  You can all take turns flogging me if I'm wrong. ...

My Take On The SURVEY.....
Dec 06, 2011

I am an MT who has been around for 14 years with this company and I have my gripes like all the rest of you.  I took the survey and stuck it to them when it mattered.  For example, when they ask if compensation encourages people to do their best, the obvious answer is "strongly disagree" right?  When they ask if compensation is clearly tied to performance....again "strongly disagree."  Whether our answers matter or not, it's our opportunity to vent our frustrations with ...

Survey Of New Pay
Feb 02, 2015

Before the new pay rule game, I made 7.5 cents (3.75 cents for editing). Then when this new pay game started, I made less at 7 cents. However, I find lately I've been actually making noticeably more money with this pay game. You just got to keep quality and pending to QC under control. In fact, I think I now make a few hundred dollars more per month, if I keep it up, keeping quality up and QC pending down. I know some of you were actually paid 8 cents (4 cents for editing), so there is ...

Waah Nobody Wants To Take The Survey
Jul 13, 2010

Less than 10% of us have taken the long, boring, unpaid survey about your latest software tweak.  Maybe its because we're sick of giving you unpaid freebies!  Enterprise sucks.  Until you get better programmers it will always suck.  Any time we report a problem the IT desk diligently finds ways to try to blame the MT's internet provider, or any other way to pass the buck they can scrounge.  There is no point in giving feedback when nobody fixes the obvious.&nbs ...
