New Client Heavy Workload decision to make - cat maid

Posted: Mar 18, 2011

I am an IC and have a prospective cliient who might have more work than I can handle on my own. I was really just looking for part-time job and this opportunity basically fell in my lap!   I am not sure whether to just take the job and hire other ICs to help with my overflow or just tell them I am only looking for part-time work and risk losing eveyrthing. It seems too wacky to me to to turn down an opportunity because it might be too many hours for me alone when I can outsource some of the work. Without boring you further with the details, for the past couple of years I have not been able to work and I am now and looking forward to working again but I am not sure I manage possibly 40- 60 hours a week typing and managing. Because I have been out circulation for almost two years it has been almost impossible to find a transcription job. Two years off seems like an eternity to employers in the transcription industry.

Another reason I am so hesitant is it can get so complicated when you hire other people. I really was not looking to be  a"boss" coordinating workflow and managing maybe one or two other people.  However, I really could use the job and with the new technology out there it seems to be much easier to outsource overflow work. I do have some experience as a transcriptionist working alone using FTP sites and email to get dictation and send reports.  However, I have not used the new digital technology to manage workflow with other people. However I do know there is no need to be picking up/delivering tapes, printed reports as I did in the past when I outsourced my overflow and this is part of what made it such a pain. I am really leaning toward just taking the job and hiring ICs to help with workload.    Does anyone have any feedback?  Thanks in advance!

TAKE IT! - You will have people

beating down your door to take the overflow. And you won't be their "boss" if they are also ICs (which you'd be crazy to let them be otherwise), and if they don't work out you can just tell them goodbye and pick the next one that's in line trying to beat down your door.

And don't worry about the technical aspects; you'll figure it out. Especially if you've done this sort of thing before. And try asking the prospective client what sort of a system they've got going now; you may be able to just step into what's already in place.

Take it, definitely! - Dont invite bad karma by passing this up

And email me if you are interested in an MT with 28 years' experience, multiple specialities, who is looking for part-time IC work.

Good luck, and way to go landing a big account!

I would take it. And good luck to you. Sounds like an amazing opportunity. If you going to be looking for ICs, feel free to email me. I'm always looking for IC work.

I concur with the everyone else's posts. Take it, take it, take it! You have nothing to lose, lots to gain.

With 25+ years experience, I also throw my hat in the ring, am currently looking for PT IC work.

I Can't Make A Decision
Apr 25, 2014

I know I want an RHIA eventually. But I don't know if I want to go straight for an RHIA or get a RHIT then an RHIA. With the RHIT, I'd be able to look for work in two years (or maybe less that that since I have some college credits). It may be as an ROI or medical records, but it would still be a job where I'd be making money, gaining experience, making connections, and getting my foot in the door at a hospital/clinic/doctor's office, etc. I just don't know what do do. ...

Had To Make A Decision Today (sm)
Apr 18, 2012

Had to decide today between Nuance and Accentus.  After reading through recent and older archived posts on this thread, I took a leap of faith, followed my intuition, and went with Accentus. Now I am sitting here crossing my fingers that following my intuition was the way to go.  Something about the recent posts about the ambiguity of the incentive plan coupled with that 99% QA score really skeeved me out.  It's ironic, because every place where I've worked, QA was 98 ...

With Heavy Heart
May 24, 2013

It is with heavy heart that I am giving up my career as a transcriptionist. After 19 years of transcription, with all the changes to the industry, I can no longer make the kind of money I used to make without working multiple jobs and endless hours just to get a decent line count. I have taken a wonderful position in another industry and I am looking forward to my new adventure. First time in many years (longer than I can remember), I will be working Monday through Friday with all the hol ...

Feb 02, 2012

just saying... look..I don't begrudge any of these business school graduates their right to validate their jobs by writing ridiculous nonsensical doublespeak tomes to impress their market share holders..but in the end this is a simple business which they have ruined.  The docs dictate the crap We type the crap We send the crap back And it's available to view.  How this information is managed and accessed of course improves with technology, but Medquist or MModal, or Doll ...

Am I The Only One Who HATES These Heavy Logitech Headphones?
Apr 07, 2012

I hate these stupid headphones, they are heavy, I do not need a Britney Spears mic..and the cord twists onto itself so bad it is impossible to get a good fit.  Once again..they do not consider what an actual MT needs, just send stupid generic headsets for air traffic controllers and pop stars and do not for one second consider what would work best for us.  I hate having to fit it around my head, it guts stuck in my hair.  Yes..the sound is fine, but the torture of wearing these th ...

Bad Decision....now What????
Nov 23, 2010

I made a poor decision in not researching medical transcription schools fully before starting and went through At-Home Professions, not very smart. I have now completed the course and have come to the conclusion that I am not as prepared as I thought I was to enter this field. I enjoyed what I did learn but am becoming very discouraged with the fact that I wasn't prepared to enter the job market. My dilema is I don't have the funds to take courses some where else as I already wasted mo ...

Decision Day
Dec 16, 2010

Well, the day has come where I need to decide whether or not to let MQ go.  I took a second MT job in September because I no longer want to work evenings (all that is available to me with the Q) and I can't keep up with both of them.  Problem is, I make more with MQ, believe it or not, although with time I am sure I will catch up in the other one. I think I am worried about putting all my eggs in one basket . . . . ...

Big Decision

How does flex work with Nuance?  If I know I need to type at least 1500 a day but I only get 1000, do they let you work over so I could possibly get 500 lines for that day?  They told us they had plenty of work but not quite so sure about that.   ...

Workload Vent
Aug 03, 2010

Nothing I like better than to have no work on a Saturday (when I am supposed to be working) and then get E-mailed throughout the day on Sunday asking for help and that the acount will fall behind and out of TAT.  Please... give me a break.  Just ridiculous.  Could you at least entice me to do some "supposed" extra work by at least giving an incentive.  Why do I have a feeling I am on an over-flow account and was never told this?  Common MTSO's get a clue. ...

I'm really ticked off.  Normally I have work every day.  Today I have not been assigned any work and have been sitting here waiting and watching for work to come in.  If they have no work for me, why don't they let me know that the work is low and nothing will be coming in?  I guess if anything does come in now, it's not going to get done until after the holiday weekend.  ...

NUANCE QA/QC WORKLOAD

Workload Across All MTSO Companies
Sep 08, 2011

I've noticed in reading posts lately a LOT of companies are majorly low on work.  I'm looking to make contact with those MTs/SRs who are having issues keeping a steady flow of work from their current company or having issues with finding and keeping positions in MTSOs due to low workloads and lack of communication from the employers/MTSOs.  It appears that the government is subsidizing the MDs to utilize the EMR/EHR programs on IPads, which will essentially allow them to do ...
