To Webmedx decision makers - A plea for common sense

Posted: May 31, 2011

I don't have an MBA from Harvard, but it is just common sense to me that you don't continually punish employees with lower pay when they are the ones who are generating the money that pays your salary!  Plus, our work is PRODUCTION oriented.  A happy production employee is a high producer!  Doesn't that make sense to anybody but me?  What is the matter with you people?  My motivation is gone.  I have complete apathy towards my job now.  I was once very proud and happy to work at Webmedx.  But no more.  I now feel like I am in an abusive relationship, and it's time to get out.  I can't allow them to have this much negative power over my finances and my life.  Wake up and stop being a negative force in the world and start being a positive force.  Take care of your employees!!

I feel the same way about the company I work for. Been there three years, and everything was great til I got a new regional manager. It's been **** since then. I'm constantly stressed out. I used to love my job. Now I dread even getting on to start. But I'm keeping on because I need the money and I don't want to put my kids in daycare to work full time. Management being nicer would do wonders for all of us.

Caring for children while working? - why is this okay?

[ In Reply To ..]
I keep seeing these posts from people who accept the crappy pay at MTSOs just so they don't have to put their kids in daycare. If kids are young enough to need daycare, MTing and childcaring cannot both be done well simultaneously.

This sounds crazy to me too - anon

I can't imagine trying to produce quality work while watching my young children at the same time. My husband and I work opposite shifts so we don't need daycare, and when I am working, I am 100% focused on my job. I wouldn't want someone creating one of my medical documents while trying to watch their kids at the same time. Yikes!!!

This used to be a "respectful position." Now we have all these wannabies because of staying at home and having young children as well as not working weekends because of "said children."

I learned something very new and interesting yesterday -- MEMORIAL DAY -- A MAJOR HOLIDAY -- my apartment complex was open as was a bank down the street that I had to cash a payroll check with 99 degree temperatures and I am 55 and slightly handicapped. I get EXTREMELY upset with these "prima donnas" who think they can work when they can, Try being single right now. I'm on food stamps for the first time and about to get evicted. A year ago, I had money in the bank even after paying bills and bought things for a beautiful condo that I rented. Unfortunately, speech wreck and GREED took over. I am trying to get assistance right now, and am asked "what do you make per month"? I don't know because of work flucuation.

This is NOT NOR HAS BEEN an occupation for "hobby mamas."

Well said. Never heard the term Hobby Mamas" used but have to agree. So many of the newbies have come into this field without understanding of turnaround times, etc. I truly believe those who have not worked in house (or only worked there minimally) do not understand how the system works. It is not a just "work when I want or can" situation. The dictation needs to be done in a manner appropriate for proper patient care If we can't do that...???

Working at home with youngsters can be done, but NOT while you are the main caregiver. Lack of concentration and excessive interruptions allow for more mistakes to be made. You wouldn't take them to an in house job would you?

On, before the young mothers get up in arms. I am a grandmother who does before and after school daycare for her grandchildren. I have scheduled my work day to accommodate this. During the summer other family members help out during the time of my "shifts". I would not even want to try and work with their games, videos, TVs, and thousand questions coming at me.

Stay at home mom - Chill
[ In Reply To ..]
You all need to chill. I know woman who have done this, raised their kids and done the medical transcription with fine detail. It is called multitasking!!!! Most of the trade schools sell this idea to woman looking for a career with kids to take care of. âYou can work at home and be with your kidsâ. How many of you have to break for lunch, make your own lunch, oh wait the laundry needs to be put in dryer, oops got to let the dog out!!!! So if you all work without any interruptions well good for you --- you are perfect. I know when I worked in-house; I just ran got some lunch and sat back and my desk. I did not have to prepare it and do dishes and clean kitchen. Without a little disruption to stretch my body would be a wreck.

That idea was what helped in the downspiral of this profession. sm - CrispyCritterMT
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes everybody take breaks, but taking care of laundry or making lunch is different than trying to work and being preoccupied with what kids are up to and whether they are doing harm to themselves, etc.

Working with children at home - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
This is amazing and soooo typical. Women bickering and fighting against one another. This is why I will not work in an office for a woman boss. Instead of trying to support and help one another, we blame each other for differing circumstances. When I started this career, I had just had my second child. Yes, daycare was too expensive for two. I gratefully went to work for a local MTSO in my area. My QA was tough, but soooo helpful. I credit her with the fact that after 4 years I was made a QA. She had five children. She worked all hours, day and night, as do I. I take my dinner break for soccer games, I miss out sometimes on other events with the kids. But...my youngest is an honor roll student and a perfect attendance winner. My oldest is on the Dean's list again and is in his sophomore year in college. They are grateful that I am here for them. I don't have to choose between my job and my kids. So many in office jobs expect you to go to work when the kids are sick. No choice. In the summer when my oldest was a teenager, he ran with his friends, but I was here and aware of what was going on and I beleive that helped keep him from getting into potential trouble. Being gone 12 hours a day in the summer is a breeding ground for teenagers getting in over the heads sometimes. My children, including the youngest, always hold open doors to women and older persons, always say thank you, please, and your welcome. My oldest complimented me the other day by saying how glad he was that I taught them common courtesy in such a rude society; he just gets so frustrated by how rude people are nowadays. Maybe it is difficult to raise children and work at home, but it is a lot better than letting them raise themselves. Why don't we all come together and support each other, not only in our careers, but in our personal lives as well. Let's not be what people say about women; petty and backstabbing.

Working with children at home... - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
BTW...I am a single mother and have been for except for 4 years out of the last 20 years. I have fought tooth and nail to get child support and not received hardly any of it. So before I have to hear it from single mothers about I don't know what it is like or married or single women with no children that I get special treatment, I want to say that sometimes things are so very far from easy that it does feel overwhelming, but I chose this life just like everyone else choses theirs. How difficult one's life is compared to another's is relative. What is hard for one person is of no issue to another. Again, instead of being petty and backstabbing, let's all realize that life is tough at times for everyone and help each other hang in there!

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm so glad to here someone else agrees. We could really make some differences in not only each others' lives, but also in this industry if we really came together with some understanding and support for one another. There are so many things I would like to try to accomplish for us that quite frankly the AAMT didn't do. The best way for the AAMT and others to do things that are not in our best interest is to get us fighting amongst ourselves and as we become more and more distracted from the really issues, they can do what they want to do while we are busy helping them out by no longer paying attention to what is really important. Think about it.

[ In Reply To ..]
I feel exactly the same; I am in an abusive relationship. Just think transcriptionists are majority women. This was a field where women used to be proud of as they were being rewarded (paid good wages) for their skills and knowledge of medical language and English language. Corporations take over and realize it is a field of mainly women so let us pretend like they are barefoot and pregnant and should really be in the kitchen taking care of their man!!!! Let us pay them close to nothing as they have that âmanâ taking care of them!!!!! Wake up corporations a lot of us are single woman trying to feed our children probably some of us making less than what we could get with government assistance.

..."single woman trying to feed our children."

A company does not owe you more than the next worker just because you are a single mom. That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. By your argument, you should get better treatment as a "single mom" than me who is not a single mom, or than a man who is not a single parent.

And your argument that MT companies take advantage of MTs because they feel they are "barefoot and pregnant and should really be in the kitchen taking care of their man" is, again, one of the most far-reaching ridiculous things I've ever heard.

There are men who work as MTs at my company. They are treated no better or worse than their female counterparts.

The downturn in the economy, offshoring, the rise of speech rec, hospitals putting the squeeze on MTSOs to provide cheaper work at increasingly faster TATs - *those* are the contributors to our current work environment.

I am so tired of people taking a post out of contexts. I said this was a field of mostly woman, not all women. I did not say single mothers should have better treatment. I said this used to be a profession where a woman (or man if he chose this field) used to get pain for their skill, now corporations are ripping us all off!!! Guess what folks. I am not even a mother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should really read a post and try to get the contexts correct!!!!!!!!!

I most certainly did read the post - a few times through in fact. - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
I even quoted the post.

It blamed the current plight of the MT industry on the fact that the industry is made up of mostly women, many of them single mothers and the post blamed upper management of being chauvenistic and wanting to keep women barefoot and pregnant and in the kitchen.

I did take the context into consideration, and I stated that I feel it is ridiculous.

I have read a few posts not only about the future compensation worries at Nuance for us "Webbers" but also mentioning the former CEO for Webmedx. I have worked for this man even before my Webmedx days. Bad Decision....now What????
Nov 23, 2010

I made a poor decision in not researching medical transcription schools fully before starting and went through At-Home Professions, not very smart. I have now completed the course and have come to the conclusion that I am not as prepared as I thought I was to enter this field. I enjoyed what I did learn but am becoming very discouraged with the fact that I wasn't prepared to enter the job market. My dilema is I don't have the funds to take courses some where else as I already wasted mo ...

Decision Day

I know I want an RHIA eventually. But I don't know if I want to go straight for an RHIA or get a RHIT then an RHIA. With the RHIT, I'd be able to look for work in two years (or maybe less that that since I have some college credits). It may be as an ROI or medical records, but it would still be a job where I'd be making money, gaining experience, making connections, and getting my foot in the door at a hospital/clinic/doctor's office, etc. I just don't know what do do. ...
