I shouldn't have taken this job (venting) - regretful

I actually like the job. The dictators are fine. I'm a month into the job and now in the comfort zone, past the breaking-in period. But this is my first time doing voice recognition, and the pay is too low. I really didn't have any experience in knowing an acceptable rate for VR. It is my fault for accepting the pay, because they told me what the pay was before I accepted the job. I'm not trying to blame my job at all. But I was just too eager to be getting a paycheck to even think about asking for more. It just didn't even cross my mind. I was willing to accept almost any pay. I needed money.
Now I realize that what the job is paying me is not a liveable wage. I will have to keep the job until 3 or 4 months into next year at least, so I can get some medical stuff done and find a new job after that, but unless they give me a raise, I can't stay here.

[ In Reply To ..]Unfortunately in survival mode most will take on any pay even though it is extremely low. You agreed to the pay and accepted the job so the ball dropped in your hands. You could have refused the job, but like you stated you needed money. I do believe all VR pay is about the same at most nationals - there just is not any way around VR to make a living. It is really pitiful and slave wages I agree. The only one VR benefits is the employer in my opinion. I wish you luck in your medical "stuff." Good luck at getting a raise as well. :)

I thought I may struggle for a little while, but once I got into it I realized that things on the account were not going to get better, but much worse since it was a new account, and that it would be a year or more before I would be able to get my income back up. It was exhausting trying to keep up with doctors and specs changing virtually every day, so fast in fact that they could not keep the specs updated so you had theirs, your own, and a list of e mails to go by. It really got ridiculous. But there is no reason why at the end of the day you can't check out job boards and opportunities and go ahead and make a move when the right one comes along. You don't want to miss a good one because they are few and far between now.
I feel your pain. I am so sorry this has happened to you. Keep your chin up, keep looking, and I hope you land right back on your feet again. Good luck.

I'm just saying that if you are stuck in this position for a while, you might as well try to make the best of it. Squeeze every penny that you can out of that VR and you will be even more prepared when that better job comes around! : 0)
I know that some VR is terrible, but there are things that you can do to make it go faster. I have several macros that will correct things for me and make things go much quicker. I use AutoHotKey (a free download if you search on Google). It is a bit confusing at first to use, but if you can figure out how to send keystrokes you can do pretty much anything you want. You can also send mouse clicks so you can keep your fingers on the keyboard and spend less time reaching for that mouse.
You can make simple macros for deleting a word, a couple words, a whole paragraph, creating a heading, etc., etc. I also use macros to send notes to QA for me. I recently got put on a new account that never comes in as the right work type and created a macro that will allow me to change to the correct WT without using the mouse. I was bored the other day with continual NSA (yes, I am an unfortunate WMX employee right now) and even made a macro that will keep checking for work for me so I don't have to keep clicking that stupid work list button myself. The possibilities are endless! I love being creative and finding new ways to make things go faster and easier. If you need help, let me know!

How do you treat words that the physician abbreviates that shouldn't necessarily be abbreviated? For example, I'm transcribing for an ENT physician's assistant who routinely will abbreviate medications or conditions in her haste to speak quickly. In a dictation I'm working on now, the patient has "a perfed TM and is on Oflox. otic suspension" (the patient has a perforated TM and is on Ofloxacin otic suspension). The score for this quarter? Mine is still showing my QA accuracy score exactly as it was prior to 09/30, which made me ineligible for the weekly production incentive bonus for the entire last quarter. OK....this is what really pisses me off.....we are asked to "know" 75 pages of acct. specificis, 20+ pages of MTS specifics and the BOS, PLUS each individual acct. has their own way they want things, plus being "English Majors" for these reports and you are only paying us 4 cpl!!!? Gotta vent while awaiting manager response. I do this report yesterday that required a cosigner, who I could not understand the name of. The resident goes on to say the name of the cosigner again at the end of the report, but I still could not understand it (ESL). I pend the report because of lack of knowing who the cosinger was and today I did one of those wonderful CPSE cirtical error emails because I did not put in the cosigner. I just have to vent in the middle of this dictation where the dictator, a nurse, whispers the whole way through the dictation (not just this one but all of her dictations) and says "uh" at least 4 or 5 times per sentence in this very long dictation. I just have to vent.....the thing that I cannot stand most about this job - even more than the pay, the lack of work, etc....is when the dictator CHEWS GUM when he/she is dictating. The sound of someone smacking their gum, whether in person or on the phone, makes me CRAZY. I am positive they do not do this in front of patients or other doctors...but since we aren't 'real people' to them...they just smack away. I can barely get through the report. OK. ...

I just finished a day where half it was spent on an ESL dictators doing short progress notes using VR, so had to change almost EVERYTHING. No lines to speak of.
