I had such a bad day today and am feeling quite sorry for myself. I cannot believe I have been doing this for so long and am making so little money. I tried to look up things online about the transcription business and came across an article that was pretty interesting. It's pretty much what everyone says on this site all the time, but in case anyone would like to read the article, it is at mttoolsonline.com/2011/01/26. I am really ready to leave this profession now and start looking for something else.

No matter how little money I make, I do this to stay at home with my kids. I am raising my children and homeschooling them and taking them to their activities. MT'ng part time has always allowed me to do that because I work evenings after everything else is done. Since I have to work, what else would I do besides this without going back to school, which I have not time nor money for, and I won't take a job outside the home, so for those of us who have just "taken it", well many of us have taken the downgrading of our careers for good reasons. Mine is my kids and even though I don't make decent money anymore, I work a few more hours and it still pays for their school supplies and activities. I'm stuck in this for the long haul, no matter what happens and I will just have to take whatever the industry dishes out and make the best of it. Not to say I am happy about it...absolutely no way. Beat me up if you want to, but until something better comes up, I am doing what I have to do right now.

If you have writings skills, you can write e-books, self-publish online, and sell on Amazon. It's so easy now. Yes, it IS a process, but it can be done. Something you can work on in your spare time that may pay off. Also, check out Lulu.com, a self-publishing site. Good luck...and NEVER ever feel like you're "stuck" doing anything. Thoughts are things, and the good ones CAN become reality too!

I am in the same position as you are. I'm thinking of homeschooling my kids this year as well as their school has become less than an ideal place for them due to budget cuts made.

I have been looking at starting my own business or freelancing instead of doing MT. I used to be an eBay PowerSeller before I did this, so I'm hoping I can come up with something good to sell again or another avenue for doing something on my own to replace MT as it is too depressing working for 4 cpl for awful speech rec.

I just wanted to encourage you that there can be other options out there for you. You don't have to just put up with whatever the MT profession dishes out.

I love working at home. I did this while my daughter was young also so I could be home to take her to school and pick her up and just be home with her. I would like to continue to work at home, but I find that I hate getting up in the morning to work and am really starting to get depressed. Anyway, good luck to you. If it allows you to be home with your children then it is worth it. I just hate that transcription has gotten to this point.

OK....this is what really pisses me off.....we are asked to "know" 75 pages of acct. specificis, 20+ pages of MTS specifics and the BOS, PLUS each individual acct. has their own way they want things, plus being "English Majors" for these reports and you are only paying us 4 cpl!!!? Gotta vent while awaiting manager response. I do this report yesterday that required a cosigner, who I could not understand the name of. The resident goes on to say the name of the cosigner again at the end of the report, but I still could not understand it (ESL). I just have to vent in the middle of this dictation where the dictator, a nurse, whispers the whole way through the dictation (not just this one but all of her dictations) and says "uh" at least 4 or 5 times per sentence in this very long dictation. ARGH! Doing a LONG report and this doc must've gotten NO sleep last night b/c she is constantly trying to dictate THROUGH HER YAWNING....soooo frustrating. I just have to vent.....the thing that I cannot stand most about this job - even more than the pay, the lack of work, etc....is when the dictator CHEWS GUM when he/she is dictating. The sound of someone smacking their gum, whether in person or on the phone, makes me CRAZY. I just finished a day where half it was spent on an ESL dictators doing short progress notes using VR, so had to change almost EVERYTHING. No lines to speak of. Venting session! I am a part-time work-at-home transcriptionist employed at a local hospital as "resource". When I started a couple months ago we had over 1500 jobs in the "cue" with mandatory overtime ... then along came EPIC. The regular employees are working in 2 hour shifts so everyone can get a few reports in ... having under 75 dictations has become the norm and there isn't enough work for them ... and I have had no work for 6 weeks. ...

I just came across "Benzapril" listed as a medication that Speech Wreckignition picked up. Granted, that is how this doctor pronounced it, but it should be "benazepril."
