I left MQ 6 weeks ago. After 9 years, I was terrified - mt

Posted: Apr 01, 2010

to start somewhere new.  I tried 3 other companies in the past, part time while continue to work at MQ, and left each one because the software was so much better at MQ.  Finally, I got sick of the crap and threats and new accounts, and I left.  The day I left I was dancing around my house all day long, so relieved to be rid of them.  Now, I make less than my base at MQ, but I have no ASR, so it's actually more.  The software is not as good, but that is a minor inconvenience.

I haven't been threatened with reduced pay, or audits, or performance management, or lock out.  I sent in a report with 12 QA markers last week.  My QA person filled in the blanks and told me it was a perfect report because QA markers DON'T COUNT AGAINST YOU.  What a novel concept, not punishing someone because they admit to not knowing what the mush mouth ESL is saying.  For all of you afraid to leave MQ, just do it.  You will be surprised how good it is to climb out of hell.

I'm glad you took the plunge. Money isn't everything, I know your cpl will increase eventually, and you'll be stress-free. A new concept for MQers.

Need new job too - amd

Congrats on your new job. Does this company provide equipment? That is the only thing keeping me at MQ. I hate ASR, so that is a plus for me that your said your new job has no ASR, Would I make 8.5 cents a line that is my base here but I never get transcription so I usually only make 5.10 cents per line (ridiculous after 25 years experience). What is problem with software? How nice that QA markers don't count against you. They never have any place I ever worked before except at MQ.

They only provide a foot pedal. I make 9 cpl - mt

because I work part time at night. I was making 10.5 cpl at MQ plus a shift differential, so 11 cpl. The software is not as easy to navigate, less function keys. The client profile is not as easy to access, but they don't have a cesspool. You work in your accounts only. If you run out of work, they add an account to your work pool and train you on that account, not just throw you to the wolves. I have added 2 accounts since starting, for a total of 3 now. I am producing about 145 lph, down from MQ where I generally did about 250 until 3 accounts went to India and 2 were converted to ASR. Now that I have enough accounts and am no longer training, I expect to my production to increase significantly. And, they actually told me I was a great transcriptionist, something I never heard at MQ.

I feel like I have PTSD from MQ. - mrs.krabs

I left about 5 weeks ago after 12 years with them. I've got a few resumes out there, contacts, and have taken one transcription test. Got an offer coming in today from a recruiter. I am hoping for the best, but I still have such a bad feeling about what MQ did to me. It was psychological abuse and I let my supervisor know that when I quit. Of course, she didn't understand the abuse part. My anger was released in a resignation letter. I had been with the company for so long, knew her from way back, such that she was shocked I was unhappy. They can't seem to grasp ESL pushes up submission rates, and that's what you get at tier 3 level, the hardest and the worst dictation. I quit before FTR came along. Accuracy and speed mean nothing to them, just submission rates are so important. Well, screw them. I'll take my knowledge and skills elsewhere where someone will appreciate me. I've been praying and patiently waiting for something to come along, but like I told my husband last night when resending a resume (silly me, she who doesn't know MS Word but muddled her way through the transcription test, forgot to put it in .doc format) that MQ has just left a "bad taste in my mouth" about the entire transcription field. I am second-guessing myself about everything due to MQ, going against things I was taught were correct, wondering if I should follow client profile, "Dr. Special Needs", or that freaking BOS style guide (some things are wrong in that by the way and I am old school from the 1980s), and, of course, being zapped by QA or whatever the acronym for the day is, for stupid little things that don't amount to a hill of beans, usually being a disagreement in style preference. I'm sure I had more years of experience than the one editing my reports. Well, I am moving on to better things. I deserve better and will patiently wait for the best offer and fit for me. I will not work for a company that offshores. I honestly feel that MQ is going to implode. The bottom line is not always the answer. I think they will start losing accounts. The Joint Commission is not going to tolerate their ineptness which will cause the hospital administrators to seek better services, hopefully inside the U.S. Enough said, I wish the best for the MQ transcriptionists in the U.S. Get some experience under your belt (if your psyche can take it) and seek better employment elsewhere. MQ is not the only game in town.

Hope all the dissatisfied/unhappy/suffering MTs - on this board read your

post ! Yes -- everyone's complaints are valid, but why just keep complaining and making yourselves miserable ? I saw a counselor for a couple of months over the MQ situation. It was repeatedly drilled into me that: MQ is NOT doing anything to me that I am not ALLOWING them to do. There was a list of ways I could "choose" to react to the situation. The first was "Stay and suffer. The last was "Leave." In between there were variations, like "Stay and try to change the situation." Well - we know that is not an option. But the bottom line is -- if we stay, then we have no reason to complain because we are tacitly accepting what they are doing to us. I kept ranting about what a big bad wolf MQ was -- and the counselor kept telling me that as long as I kept thinking that way I was going to be miserable and make everyone around me miserable and it was NOT CONSTRUCTIVE. So... Same as the OP above, I quit a month ago, took tests on line, was immediately e-mailed back by recruiters saying they were very interested in me, then filled out some application stuff, and within a week had a new job that I love. I sit down to transcribe every morning wondering why I am not shaking or tearing up and why I am ENJOYING my work again. First reason is -- it is not 90% ESL. A handful of ESL, sure, but not impossible ones. And lots of "samples" of their work have been sent to me (good samples - not the junk full of errors that is in the repository). Blanks ? Penalized for leaving blanks ? They were astonished. Of course not. Please leave a blank if you have any doubts at all and our QA will let you know what was filled in, if anything. And PRAISE for being an excellent transcriptionist ? I have had phone calls from the manager as well as emails from QA. They are highly pleased with my work. Never heard that from anyone at MQ. I am being paid 1/2 cent per line less than at MQ, but made more money in 2 weeks than at MQ in 4 weeks because no ASR and very little ESL. And they refuse to send work to India. So if the MQ situation is no longer a good fit for you -- move on -- all my anxiety and crying jags and shaking simply melted away within a few days. So nice. As the OP says, MQ "is not the only game in town." You just need to tell yourself as she did that you are worth more than the working conditions now being imposed upon you. Good luck to everyone.

good post, but - sm

People stay for different reasons. One reason might be they are hoping for the layoffs, as it seems MQ is discouraging its workers into quitting. Then they just come here to vent, hoping we are getting closer to "that day." Lots of people have been here through change after change and would like a cherry for all their troubles.

Not the only game in town - adios

I'm not with MQ but I need to make a decision about my situation as well. I will never understand being punished for leaving blanks. I'm from the old school when it comes to blanks: "When in doubt, leave it out." It makes so much more sense to do that instead of "guessing." This is a patient's permanent record and no one should be guessing on what is being said. That's crazy but happens all the time for fear of jobs being lost because the MTSOs care about the bottom line...getting those reports out. Congrats for finding a better job. I'm hoping to do the same.

Wrapped up with MQ last week and started new job this week. Believe it or not, there are actually people who ask you if things are going okay and care if you like your job? There are nice people out there who treat you as people and I am blessed to have found them. They are people who care if you have family matters and actually give us holidays off--with pay. Tomorrow is Good Friday and for the first time in 15 years, I have the day off. Please do not give up--the day you resign from MQ, a huge weight will be lifted from you and you will smile from ear to ear! My new job is not in transcription, but does involve typing--so consider data entry positions. Trust me--you will make more than you are now at MQ.

I so agree with PTSD - adios

I, too, feel like I am suffering PTSD. It is most definitely psychological abuse. I, too, am praying and waiting for a more healthy occupation. I am getting out of transcription after over 15 years, because I think MQ has ruined the whole profession.

My heart really goes out to those just getting into transcribing, after spending God knows how much in education, based on false hopes.

Too bad, was a great occupation back in the day.

Thank you for posting this. I too have been juggling 2 jobs and have left in the past to come back for the software and the PTO I get after over 10 years. Not to mention they provide your PC. It's hard to take that leap. This gives me motivation

with Edix, Spheris and then MModal. I was full time with benefits and at top pay and yes, I was working my hours and making line counts. In my case, and I hope this makes some people feel better, it was obvious they were trying to make me quit for about a year. My main account suddendly vanished. I assumed I would be placed on another acute care account, since I was tier 3, but work simply dried up. Then I was placed on clinic account. I knew immediately they were not going to pay my ra ...

I lost my last account to India 3 years ago and decided it just wasn't worth it any longer after 20 years of all this crap. I have only returned to this board today after 3 years and the complaints are all just the same as they were 3 years ago - some of the same companies (they will never change), some new companies that are probably old companies that changed their name because they could no longer get people to apply for their positions. 18 years and have NEVER looked back when they got bought out by CBay-that was it for me.  I knew then that nothing good would come of working for an Indian-owned company.  I even turned down an admin job when my company was bought out by MQ-no way would I work for that disgusting establishment, so went on UE for a few months and didn't care!  Now I love my job and am treated like a real person!  It is greener elsewhere and you will be okay.  I know it is scary, but ...

I Left MT Finally After 10 Years
Nov 11, 2013

I struggled with leaving, I put so much into this and granted I got to stay home with my kids when they were small, but the worry about steady money was the price we paid. We filed for bankruptcy and almost lost our house. Thankfully, we got a loan mod which reduced our mtg down from 1700 to 1400. I finally applied on Craigslist to part-time law firm positions and got one for 3 days a week next town over making $15 an hour. I bring home after taxes $300 a week and have 4 days to spend on my ...

I got a degree in health information technology in 2007 by an AHIMA certified program. I did it after I got laid off from a transcription job and getting fed up, realizing I would be more marketable with the degree. I continued to work in QA at home and never took my RHIT because I was worried I'd fail and not get my money back for it. I feel like more doors would open up for jobs if I could get it. After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm
Nov 26, 2012

Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore. The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words:  Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc.  I felt relieved to finally have a "job." What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...

3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor?
Dec 20, 2013

There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...
