I've been doing this a long time, and I know how oblivious doctors are to anything approaching being polite when they dictate. I've heard them in the bathroom, I've heard them yelling at their kids, talking on the phone, listening to football games on TV while dictating, etc. We all have. But there's this one foreign female doctor on the account I regularly transcribe who drives me UP the wall. She apparently thinks dictation time is time to eat. I have never had a single report by this woman that she wasn't consuming something. She makes the most robust loud smacking, crunching, sucking sounds throughout the whole (long) dictation. I feel like I'm in her mouth or she's standing right next to my ear. You can tell she is definitely not eating with her mouth closed. It makes me ill sometimes, and I know there is nothing that can be done for it. I still marvel they don't seem to realize there is a human being on the other end of the phone. I just needed to vent because I just finished one of her reports and now I've lost my appetite.

I had an operative report today, good dictator, female. There started to be some heavy laughter in the background and she got very loud with her dictation as if she was talking in their direction and they quieted down. I am sure that is what happened and good of her to command some quiet.

a quiet place to dictate? If they are, maybe some docs are too lazy/rushed? to actually GO to that place. So annoying. Although a quiet place wouldn't be any help for the chompers who munch on their lunch while dictating!

...disgusting, downright rude...shall I go on? I had a couple of doctors a few years back who always dictated at lunch time. It's like fingernails grinding down a chalkboard! Every darn day!!! You wish you could reach through your dictaphone and choke the food right out of their mouths or cram it down their throats! I feel for ya!!!

where they have all the equipment set up for dictation. It is right next door to medical records. There is enough room maybe for 4 or 5 docs in there at once. The problem is, it is in the basement. Docs who are up on the 4th floor don't want to go all the way to the basement to dictate because they have to come back up. It isn't a very big hospital, so I can imagine what it would be like in a large one.

I had a doctor from India who spoke very softly and mumbled and then had his three kids screaming in the background. When I complained about it he had me to know that the other transcriptionist didn't have a problem. I invited him to call her to see if she wanted her job back !

I have a lady dictator who does the same thing, and her voice is like a fingernail on a chalkboard to me even when she isn't eating. When she's snorkling down that food and dictating, she has seriously choked a couple of times and gone into spasmodic coughing episodes (and, no, she does not pause during these hacking attacks, either...I get to listen to them just like I get to listen to her smacking her food around).

You would think after the first half dozen episodes of choking while she's trying to eat and dictate she'd have learned her lesson, but noooooo, she keeps on keepin' on.

It's truly a disgusting habit and while I realize they have to eat sometime, surely they could spare 15 minutes out of their day to eat and THEN start dictating.

I keep thinking I'll get to hear a Code Blue to the Dining Area called on this woman one of these days when I'm transcribing one of her reports, lol!

Dictating and passing gas and saying ahhhh after done. It cracks me up, I will play it twice, as farts are just funny, to me.

The eating, nasal problems, coughing, belching, and other things really gross me out to the point of nausea at times. The yawners make me also yawn and that is so not good to start out with them. But the gas passers, they get me going.

Obviously they do not realize we are on the other end of the dictation.

We all need to start a dictation class to educate these clowns. LOL

Some have made me gag with their pulling back the nose secretions before running off the top lip and hitting the floor. (bleck!)

Yeah, no kidding. When my pugs do their barely audible lip smacking routine right before bed, it's adorable. When someone is loudly smacking food in your ear, it's disgusting. I don't think they realize how they sound. I think some dictate from the cell phones on the way to the office. I also think that some of the guilty parties are residents who try to cram in their eating and dictation at the same time so they can get some sleep. Not excusing it, just wondering if these are some reasons this happens.

I have heard it all. Enough to gross you out. I have 2 dictators on my account presently who must have sinus and allergy problems. While they are coughing, sneezing, and blowing their nose - they just keep right on talking as if it is not happening. Now if you were in front of a person and did this, you would say excuse me and try to suppress sharing your secretions. I honestly think they forget there is an actual person listening to them.

Then we would not have to sit through a dictator reading their chart, interviewing the patient, eating, going to the bathroom, taking phone calls, etc. But then I think they would talk so fast and make up abbreviations for every word they could think of. Just can't win.

I had a doctor today think he was pausing the dictation simply by saying the word "pause" and making me sit thru several seconds of silence. (eyeroll).

I just did an OP report by a doc who sounded like she had the flu, coughed, sneezed, and sniffled through the whole report, and was starting with laryngitis, too.

because he accidentally left his machine running, and his transcriptionist heard him making drug deals over the phone! She turned the tape over to the medical board. And if that weren't enough, he was recently convicted of rape and went to prison. The drug deal business became public during his rape trial. It was all over the newspapers.

I had a doc last week who paused during a dictation while he and some of his other doc buddies watched a female doctor walking from her car. In court it would definitely pass for sexual harassment if she could have heard it. It was like listening to a porn movie without the pictures. I felt so sorry for her even though she didn't even know what was going on. I was mad all day!

Wow, if E-scription is such a wonderful ASR platform, I feel sorry for us all becuase I have had to change at least 1-2 words per line on E-scription today, WHENEVER I actually had work, that is. I absolutely hate the account I type for....hate it. Is it really THAT difficult to want most of the physicians dictate correctly? I said 'most' too because I do know that to expect all of them to dictate correctly is ridiculous. I can't even average 10 reports an hour on this account because of the errors. It's such a nice holiday gift they're giving us. We all know that anytime you throw a new account or dictator in the mix it drops our LPH. Because of this it will also be dropping our PTO, which is based on our LPH/cpl. I just had a report that could have been dictated and wrapped up in 10 seconds if he'd just dictated it straight through. Instead, each word was separated by about 10-20 seconds of nothing, with only the sound of him eating chips until he said another single word, then smacked and crunched again for another 10-20 seconds. Pulling standards into ASR reports!!!!! This does not work! If we were getting paid hourly maybe, but this is cruel and unusual when we are on production pay and forced to make an ASR report fit into a standard.
