...I can't understand a word they say!

At the grocery store the other day, the checkout girl asked if I found everything okay and I heard myself saying "Also I am wanted chicken frozen bosoms until I pop my eyes out of head looking for."

Strangely, she understood me perfectly. Of course, her name was Shahnaziri.

Just because someone is ESL or has a foreign name does NOT mean they can't speak English clearly or be a great dictator (or doctor for that matter). Some of the best dictators on my accounts are ESL and I would take them any day over the guy with the "Caucasian-sounding" name who slurs his words together while he races to see how fast he can complete the dictation, or the docs who think it's a good idea to eat or sit in the most crowded room they can find. Many docs with very foreign names speak English with no accent at all, or at least one that is barely even noticeable.

They have only learned a whole new language (one of the hardest to learn no less) how dare they make grammar errors or have an accent!

Btw I work on an account where the majority of my jobs are for ESL dictators (or ones with foreign names). Only a very small percent of them are overly difficult.

People who don't distinguish between race and related - but distinctly different - entities such as nationality, culture, customs, and language see "racism" everywhere they look.

Now, test the premise: Look up the definition of "race", and then tell me just which one I allegedly impugned.

my second job was at a rural hospital where one of the ESL docs in town recruited (mainly ESL docs - go figure) for his practice and they all washed through the hospital dictation system. Cut my teeth on ESL.. I nail it. Baptism by fire, if you will.

Let me ask you a question... do you think you could go anywhere on the globe, speak the native language as poorly, and be as accepted, no, welcomed, as foreign doctors have been here? And not to pick on Indians, the accent can just be really tough and they have numbers, do you think they sit around in India (just for example, insert any country of origin) saying we must be going to America and deliver the healthcare to these unfortunate American patients who are not having the access to the good healthcare, and we can be helping them. Or do you think the conversation is more like ..hey we can be millionaires in America. Let's go!

So, do you chime in and defend the Caucasian mush-mouth, speed-demon, code talkers when THEY get slammed on these boards? Personally, I've felt like, at the end of the day, I've been playing a game of "Guess What I Just Said" or more recently since this one guy made more extraneous noise than speech, "Type THAT, If You Can".

Or here's one, second-generation and Americanized, foreign name but sounds like Caucasian mush-mouth, speed-demon, code talker. Really fast. It must all be memorized, too, or they are reading it. So fast it is bizzare.

But I have typed for ESL docs who take the time to enunciate and are actually over cautious (I can only imagine how their reports have been butchered by MTs to make them so cautious) and they are perfect to type for. Maybe just a little too slow, so speed up the file. :D

a terrible dictator is a terrible dictator. I'm just sick of the sweeping generalization that just because someone is ESL or has a foreign-sounding name that they are automatically a bad dictator.

Uhhh, no. You can't find that anywnere in my post - express or implied - and your "interpretation" of my post is so far off the mark that frankly I can't see it with a telescope.

I am not sure if this is going on with your accounts, but I have noticed on my primary that there are a lot of old reports in there, from days and days ago. A few weeks back my team leader said ignore those TAT times because they were pulling old stuff for "training." It started with DS, and now I notice that there are old H&Ps and Consults in there. Did anyone ever contact a hospital after your account was lost to find out where it went and you were still employed with the former MTSO that had the account. Concerned about doing this if the hospital were to contact the MTSO and still employed there but not overly happy anymore. I currently provide transcription to various speciality clinics using a call-in system for the dictation, typing in Word and uploading via FTP site. I was contacted by a hospital to do their transcription. They asked if my transcriptionists could type in their VPN program. Can anyone tell me how I would do QA on this then? This would be a new system to me and I really want the account. ...

Ouir BOB lost another large account and now there are too many MTs. So, about 8-12 are being moved. The account that I transcribe is going to be almost 100% ASR, and the account is being transferred to the Canadian MTs. Apparently the poor Canadians don't have enough work. They do, however, get free health insurance. Now we not only have to worry about the Indians, but the Canadians too. I can guarantee they are being paid less. ...

The doc has contacted me and we are to meet today at his office. He has such a heavy accent, I could hardly understand what he was saying. He is in need of a transcriptionist, and has 50 charts needing to be transcribed. Not sure what type of equipment he has as of yet, but obviously he must have some kind. How do I charge him. I thought about by the line at maybe 12 cpl, but his accent is so heavy, I am thinking it will take me a while before being productive ...
