From inhouse to working remotely for MTSO - after being outsourced

Posted: Jun 19, 2014

I have heard too many times where a hospital is outsourcing their transcription department and you must take the job with the MTSO, and you cannot get unemployment benefits if you don't take the job.

I have been thru it twice. Both times it was done in the most unprofessional way; in 1998 and again in 2011, two different hospitals in two different states. Both times, they lied to us, saying we must go with the MTSO and won't qualify for unemployment.

When you are laid off, you are losing your job through no fault of your own, your job is being outsourced and your department is being closed.  This is about the only time you CAN qualify for unemployment.

Your hospital must pay an increase in the unemployment experience rate if they lay off any of their employees and they don't want that. They have to pay more for a certain period of time and pay for part of your state UE compensation.  Either HR is not on the ball or administration told them to be nasty and intimidate you.

If your employer outsources your job, you will qualify for unemployment. It is whether you can live on what the weekly rate is. States are different; Massachusetts has the highest rate of unemployment compensation weekly benefits.

It is so insulting to know your employer is done with you once they sign with the outsourcing MTSO.  They lie to you, they say they "want to help you with your journey!" We asked periodically at our monthly transcription department meetings if they were considering outsourcing, and were told "I haven't heard anything." (meaning haven't heard that day) Then we were more specific, "has the hospital sent out RFIs?" (request for information from MTSOs) and were told "what do you mean?" (meaning the MTs are asking a yes or no question and our manager was squirming!). We even went so far as to ask, "has the hospital sent out out RFQs?" (requests for quotes from MTSOs), and were told "I don't speak for administration" (a big red flag!). They lie.

On a encouraging note, after the outsourcing, the VP at one hospital was fired, and at the other hospital, the CFO was told to move on or be fired and the HR manager was fired. Unfortunately, we did not get your jobs back.

One hospital was given a line rate from MM and after the initial one year contract expired, all of the sudden that rate tripled!  The hospital was forced to accept it, because they had no dictation system and the MTs had moved on, so the hospital fired the mgmt that pushed for outsourcing and stayed with that MTSO, but of course made all kinds of demands - like the pages and pages of account specifications.  Your hospital isn't told you don't get paid for demographics, and don't get paid when there is no work, or just doesn't care.  That is what so sad, you are part of a "family" with your employer until they are inundated with greedy big MTSOs determined to get their account.

This happened to me also when I worked at a hospital. They also told us we could not draw. The catch is "the other company offered you a job." They frown upon that and that is how they got by with it. Tenn is strict with that. I had a conflict with them once about this. They quit sending me checks until they investigated the situation. It took them about 2 to 3 months to get back with me and I was in the right. . Most MTs took the MTSO job because we needed insurance. The hospital employees made more per line than outside MT I think. This was all done behind 20 MTs back, called us in one night for a meeting and that was it. Then 3 years later that company sold their MT Dept and once again had no job. I used to make around $40,000 a year. I am burnt out anymore. I used to love this job plus I also had a PT job. That was my spending money. Now,it is getting hard to even buy the essentials anymore like TP and dish liquid and laundry powders. Tried to make my own laundry powders but I did not like that. So I buy the cheapest. Hospitals do not care. They say they do but they do not. It is about the almighty dollar now. That is what is wrong in this country today, just about everything is "outsourced." Stuff getting higher. Cannot afford bacon anymore. What's that. I have even taken my calculator to the store and add up groceries as I go hoping not to go over that certain amount at the checkout lane. Things are rough in my house. It is a daily struggle but for right now at least I have a roof over my head for the time being. We all need blessings. MTSO, let MTs type and forget about a certain line quota a day. We are paid by line. PT MT is better than no MT. I see ads all the time for FT, very little PT. There are good MTs out there that might not can work a 40-hour shift but could do PT. Give them a break too. Some typing is better than no typing in my book. Good luck to us all.

thank you for posting that - s/m

After 20 years with the same hospital our dept. is going to get outsourced to MM. They are literally begging us to come work for them. I know why they "want" us. I have no intentions of working for MM. I can live off unemployment until I find another job. I probably won't even look for another MT job. I know they are going to try to say we are not eligible b/c we turned down a suitable job with MM. I've even had "words" with my supervisor over the phone on this issue. She claims ignorance about it. Thank you for posting this b/c I get so ticked off when I think they may possibly get away with making us lose our UE benefits.

You are smart... - sm

Not to go with MM. I'm working for them now, and the stress is surreal. I've heard they are offering only 3cpl to those that come on board with their former hospital. I pray that's not the case, but either way, you made the right decision.

I get so upset and stressed when I come on here and read what you all are going through. I know everyone's situation is different and some have it so much harder than others with what life has given them, but remember: We are all better than MM and N! I wish everyone the best!

Thank you, so much, for your post! I worked for a group of hospitals in VA and after working there for almost 8 years with a great bunch of gals, we were outsourced to N. What a bunch of lies we were told.

In Aug 2013, we were all brought into a meeting, including those that lived hours away...they wanted us there in person. In that meeting, we learned that we would be losing our jobs and then the Rah-Rah for N started. We were promised by the HR reps there that our group would be the only ones to do our old account for at least a year. that was proven wrong as many times, there was no work as it had already been pared out to the many other MTs. We were told the same thing about EU, that if we didnt take that job we didnt qualify. Shenanigans. Then, of course, the hospital HR dept said they wanted to help us. Their advice was to seek 2nd jobs or sell our homes, and they did absolutely nothing to help us find jobs with the company. Some of the gals I worked with had been there for 20+ years. Yeah, we got 6 weeks with N of our regular salary and yet we heard of other outsourced hospital chain employees getting 16 weeks or more. Really, I cant complain, but our leads from the hospital should have had more of a spine to fight for us.

To put the icing on the cake, I was asked by COM to go on another account as a primary and have my old account as secondary. I agreed but with the prevision that if it didnt work out, I could go back. COM said absolutely, but when I tried to go back a week later, there were OOW situations and they couldnt transfer me back. I absolutely regret agreeing to that. This is by far the worst place I have worked for. They have a special way of making you feel like a piece of trash and that you are never good enough. Nothing but lies, lies, lies. Then to go from skilled pay to unskilled pay was just a huge middle finger to us.

At the present time, I am training for a new career and keeping my eye open on the local employment market. If we are making unskilled pay, might as well work an unskilled job. Less stress and at least the person lies to your face. Karma is...well you know...and it will catch up with these MTSOs eventually. Grab a bag of popcorn, its gonna get good!

Hopefully everybody that has gone/is going through this finds something that makes them happy. Employers dont care anymore...its all about money. What happens when the people that make the money for you disappear?

Oh God, advice was to "to seek 2nd jobs or sell our homes..." - Val

We didn't get that line when MM came in, but we got the "oh we'll help you" line and the barf-producing happy-happy person on the speaker phone from MM, about how they just LOVED their transcriptionists, etc, etc.

The hospital has "helped" us so much that not one of us has found a job in the hospital, not administrative assistants ("not up to date on software!") or OB/GYN floor receptionist (don't recall the reason).

Fight for you unemployment and get out of transcription.

Thank you - BTDT

Thanks for sharing, it sounds as if you did some research in regard to UE, etc. When my department closed, they chose to use an offshore vendor. Several of us wanted to continue working as MTs and requested if we could go to work for that company, but it was never an option for us. Luckily, the majority of us were placed in other internal departments. My thoughts on being told that you must accept a job with the MTSO that took your account? Is it okay to say BS in a public forum? If you are laid off, you are a free agent. If the job you are being offered pays considerably less than what you previously made, you are under no obligation to accept it. If you take the job at a lower pay rate, you are entitled to partial UE to make up the difference in your pay rate. You may not even desire to continue as an MT, no one can force you to do something you are not comfortable doing. Your employer is supposed to offer you worker retraining due to the fact that your job was outsourced. Under the law in most states, you are eligible for unemployment. That is not your employer's decision to make, there are state and federal laws governing that. My employer was up front with us; we knew at least a year in advance that layoffs were coming. We were already outsourcing part of our workload and when people left voluntarily or retired for probably 5 years leading up to this, no one was replaced, they just sent out more of the work. They scheduled meetings with reps from UE, Skill Source and the local community college so we knew what options were open to us. I never had to take it, but those who did not find other jobs were given a generous severance package. We were told the truth, and not every HR manager, administrator or MT manager lies. I would advise you to check internally and apply for jobs within your organization. Even if it's not exactly your cup of tea and you have to take a pay cut, you won't lose your benefits or seniority. I am so sorry when this happens to people; I had never been laid off before in my life and it was horribly stressful. Anyway, that is my experience, sometimes things do end well.

In house to working remotely for MTSO - Tinker

I was an in-house transcriptionist at a hospital in Southwestern PA and our jobs were outsourced to CCT in January 2014. Because the position was IC AND the pay was way lower than I was receiving at the hospital, we qualified for unemployment for six months.

I know that some of you have posted you work while traveling or at different locations. Can you tell me exactly what I would need to do that? Low Wage For Inhouse Transcriptionist
Jun 30, 2011

Hello: I interviewed today for a psychology practice that is offering $8.50/hour for a receptionist/transcriptionist position (for 3 psychologists).  I thought, well, perhaps there is not much transcription involved, but was told that would be the majority of the workday.  I feel this would be interesting work, I need the benefits provided, and all the doctors are English as first language speakers (a bonus!).   I was told all of the doctors are very caring people ...

Found An Inhouse Job And I Am Out Of This Online Nightmare

I was finally able to get hired by a local hospital that very rarely has openings. I will get to work from home once I am up to speed on their platform....doing VR....getting paid by the hour....benefits for the family of only $200/month....and PTO time. I couldn't be happier. I have been slugging it out with MTSOs for 10 years and am finally getting out of this rat race. It was music to my ears when I asked what the chances are of them ever turning their work over to a MTSO and they sa ...

Opinion Please: Friend Changing From Inhouse To MQ

Hi, I hope this is the right forum to post this on. I have a few questions pertaining to my new MTSO business. Any input or advice would be helpful. First of all, I need help with pricing. I charge my clients .12 per 65 character line. I believe that is the going rate for my area. I am wondering what to pay my transcriptionists and editors. MTSO Rates

Nonpayment By An MTSO

The little "trinkets" some of you have received is extremely comical and a so-called slap in the face to some, but some may view it as an actual good gesture, although I do not agree.
