Can we have something positive for a change? - Cheesey

Posted: Oct 17, 2011

Seriously, all I read about here are how MT sucks. It's horrible. Get out while you can.

I'm new to this field. This talk is very disheartening. Reading these threads even makes me work less because it feels pointless. So, please, can I have some positives? Something to show me that I can live off this line of work.

How many people are doing well? Good? Great?!

Sorry, don't think many are living off of transcription anymore. - JMHO

You hear so much complaining here because so many of us who have been here for more than 5 years or so have seen our pay cut drastically. In my case, I've lost my house, car and have had to declare bankruptcy last year. So why am I still here? I'm over 50, have only done transcription for the past 20 years. I'm actively looking for another position but most of the time I can't even get an interview. I can bet dollars for donuts that a younger person will get the job every time. I used to make $25,000 working part-time as a transcriptionist, now I make about half that. I didn't used to need a man around to help support me and now I do, and it really sucks to be in this position.

So, no, I don't have anything positive to tell you right now, except for the fact that I still have a job, and it barely covers the basics I need to live.

I'm hanging in there for now - strawberry

I still love working at home. I worked as an office nurse for 13 years and I make the same amount of money doing transcription at home that I did at that horribly stressful job. If you would have asked me about my job as a nurse that last year, I would have said some horrible things about it. I was burned out. I think many that post here and complain are burned out. I've been transcribing now for 5 years and I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go to VR. I did a little of it while working for Transcend and I didn't like it, but I think I could get used to anything really as long as I'm able to still work from home. I can understand those MTs getting angry cause they have seen a drastic cut in their pay with all the changes, but many here still have said they make $30,000 a year doing VR! I don't know how and would love to learn, but if they make that much and are able to stay home and work, then really there shouldn't be complaining. Also, if people are losing their homes and cars and filing bankruptcy then I would think a career change would have been done before all of that happened. I guess I'm glad that I didn't start doing this when it was paying the big bucks as I have never seen that. I just don't understand how someone can lose so much by a profession and still continue to do it, no matter what age you are.

Are you sticking with the Q? - wasHappymt

I remember from your posts you were with eTrans right? I am also. Are you sticking with the Q?. I am hanging in there at least until they change my pay or switch my accounts. From some I have spoken to at both places (old and new), they seem to think it could take months or longer to integrate. I hope for once that they are really, really slow!! I loved eTrans! Good Luck!
I was a buy-out. Now Q is doing MY accts, MY ASR, I'm not - allowed. Took 1 month for this. nm

I hope it takes a while for the transfer over LOL!

Do you type VA? I do. Someone here said that VA won't allow for VR records and also no off-shoring. I just wonder if they will lose the VA accts or allow them to be straight typing?

I hope that they will be transcribed and not typed.

No complaints from me - mimi

I'm having a very good year, better than last year so I can't complain. I'm at 54K gross so far on the year. I've been doing this over 10 years, so don't expect to make that right out of the gate, but it is do-able.

No complaints from me either, although last - year was a little rocky

[ In Reply To ..]
It was rocky due to my own bad job decision and my decision to try to "make it work" (thank you, Tim Gunn!) with a company much longer than I should have. Now, finally, things are looking up and everything is rosy in my world again.

OP, you have to remember that there are THOUSANDS of MTs in the country right now and I would venture to guess that not all of them come on this board. The really happy people are busy busting their humps and making a living and probably don't come to this board much. Quite frankly which is what I should be doing, but it was time for a break.

There are a lot of people who are not doing well in this industry for one reason or another. I'm not discounting anything anyone says that is bad, I just think there's a lot more good out there that is unspoken.

Remember that old customer service axiom: A happy person will tell one or two people, but an unhappy person will tell everyone he or she knows.

I love this job. I havent been doing it as long as some of the other ladies who post here, but for the most part it's been a great job and it beats the HECK out of having to go work in an office and deal with paper work and office politics and personalities for 40 hours a week. Good granny, if I had that to look forward to for the rest of my life, I think I might just poke my eyeballs out.

Sorry, but that should tell you something - sm

I have been at this for 16 years and this is the only career I know of where the pay has gone down. I consistently get offered 7 cpl for a job when I started out at 7.5! I am trying to get out, too. On top of the pay going downhill and being treated like a slave, we are "required" to buy stuff just to have the privilege of getting a job with them. I have only paid for equipment to get a job once. Never again!!!

Go to any web forum for any career field and you find the same thing - All is gloom and doom and contagious

[ In Reply To ..]
It doesn't matter what you want to do for a living, you'll find the same negativism everywhere. These are very bad times. Some people stay focused and do relatively fine. Some are in the wrong line of work and others would do fine, but they let all of the negativity bring them down. I've found lately that it's bringing me down. It's contagious!

A Positive Rant ... For A Change
Jan 10, 2014

After being gone for a while I've been reading some of the posts on this board for about the last week and I wanted to write up something that may help some of you.  I'm sure it will also upset a lot of people also, but hopefully this will resonate with a few too.  About this time last year I decided I wasn't going to come to this board anymore.  I had been coming here regularly, and reading all the posts before starting my work day.  Day after day post after ...

Enjoy Your Job? (A Positive Thread For Change)
Oct 31, 2012

Just wanted to find out how many of us out there are loving our jobs? Personally, I'm currently in a position to have to choose between the day job that I love as a receptionist in a Fortune 500 company where I live in Colorado, and my night job where I spend about 5 hours an evening transcribing for a great ortho group out in New Jersey through a fantastic transcription company in the same state called DocuMed, and I can't decide which to keep!  I've been with both for abou ...

Something Positive To Say
Mar 27, 2010

I get on this site every now and then and it is so disheartening to see so many people frustrated with their employers.  I work for two different companies and I have to say I love them both.  I work for OSi and I work for All Type.  Both treat me fairly, respond rapidly to questions and are nice employers.  I've always been paid on time, they both understand emergencies and I make a good income from each.  There are good companies and there are nice people to work ...

TTD- Anything Positive On Them?
May 23, 2012

Hi, I am new to this board, but have been searching jobs here.  I applied to TTD and received new-hire package.  I have been looking here at all the negative comments about them before actually figuring out what I want to do with them.  My question is, are there any positive comments about them at all?  I may have an opportunity later this summer at a job locally and have a job currently, but not sure if I want to hop into this if they don't pay.  I don't want ...

Anything Positive?
Dec 31, 2012

I'm currently a student with a nearing graduation date. I'm getting quite discouraged lately because from what I have been researching and finding on forums is that basically there is not enough work out there to make ends meet. I've seen alot of negative posts from current MTs and it makes me nervous since I have yet to graduate. Is there anything positive out there for a student like me to look forward to?? ...

Something Positive
Jun 22, 2013

I just wanted to mention something positive about MT, my experience.  There are a lot of negatives posted about the MT field on this board, and I'm not discounting anybody's experience, as, yes, there have been changes in this field, and some of those changes have hit people hard and are not fair.  I just wanted to give encouragement to people who like MT that there are some positive things/companies still going on.  I have 7 years of experience.  I graduated from C ...

Some Positive Words, Please!
Dec 30, 2009

Man, I can see the changes in the transcription industry (admittedly negative changes) have really gotten us down and we're stuck in a mire of complaints, bad feelings and feeling tired and fed up!  I feel the same way, and I feel that greed and the economy are to blame.  But sometimes you just need to hear a positive word to make it through the day, or through the week.  Here is mine - I am thankful that I do not have to spend money on work clothes and ga ...

Sure Could Use Some POSITIVE Energy
Nov 25, 2010

Not everyone is unhappy with MT work right now.  Lots of times this board is filled with much negativity and I think it is a disservice to each other.  Sometimes we need to vent, but sure would like to see people with more positive things that are happening in their life post on here, and not just read on here.  I think it is unfair to dissuade newcomers to the profession.  Give them an accurate vision of what it is like, both pros and cons.  But, I think it's wron ...

On A POSITIVE Note
May 20, 2012

I know it's rare for this board if, heaven forbid, anybody put anything positive on here. I've complained on here just like everyone else about low pay, low work, etc., but the bottom line for me is: I love the company I work for and have a great supervisor; they let me know from time to time that I am appreciated and let me know I was missed when I am gone (on vacation or whatever); they do their best to make sure I have enough work; they do thoughtful things, such as send birthday ...

Trying To Stay Positive Looking For Job
Aug 22, 2014

I have graduated a year and a half ago from school, have my CPC-A and I am not having any luck finding a job.  I have applied to so many jobs and I get the same answer all the time of needing at least 2 to 3 years of experience.  While I am trying to be patient, I feel my skills are being lost.  You HAVE to be able to code every day in order for guidelines to cement in your brain and to become aware of changes.  I do practice by doing the Optum Code This! scenarios, (which I ...

POSITIVE Tips For A New MT Please

Hello, I will be starting a full-time transcription job October 7th.  I have about 3 years experience in medical transcription, but have never worked for straight production pay, never worked from home, and have never transcribed 8 hours a day, every day.  I have been reading these forums and have read all of the negative thoughts about getting into medical transcription.  That's not what I'm looking for.  I would like tips for starting with a new company, new dic ...

SoftScript Something Positive
Nov 17, 2014

I wanted to post something positive.   I've been working for SS for a few months now, and I love it.   Been transcribing 22 years, back when WordPerfect was cutting edge!  I've worked for MANY services (MQ, HealthScribe, EDiX, M*Modal, just to name a few), 1 major hospital.  Have been MT, QA, VR, supervisor, and everything in between.   I say this not to brag, but so you know I have plenty to compare SS to.    The work is great and always there.   Pay has never been late, nor i ...

Positive Attitude, What Positive Attitude
Jan 08, 2015

I used to be a person with such a positive attitude, always smiling, taking the good with the bad and never letting the bad get me down.  Since all the recent changes at Mmodal going back several years, I've become more negative, more cynical, more frustrated, and more sarcastic.  I no longer care about the quality of a report when I get a dictator that obviously no longer cares about his/her patient.  You know that dictator that has the nerve to call on his/her cell phone wh ...
