Some positive words, please! - Pollyanna

Posted: Dec 30, 2009

Man, I can see the changes in the transcription industry (admittedly negative changes) have really gotten us down and we're stuck in a mire of complaints, bad feelings and feeling tired and fed up!  I feel the same way, and I feel that greed and the economy are to blame.  But sometimes you just need to hear a positive word to make it through the day, or through the week.  Here is mine - I am thankful that I do not have to spend money on work clothes and gas to get to work.  I am thankful to have a job right now when so many people do not.  I am thankful I don't have to sit through long, boring meetings that make me want to scream!  Anybody else want to try an attitude of gratitude? Come on, it will do you good!  Let's hear it!

I'm right there with you, ditto all the way down the line.

But watch out... anybody who actually dares to say something GOOD about their job around here is promptly labeled a "suit."

I will say it again. I am NOT a suit. I am a PAJAMA, gosh-darn it, and I last filled my gas tank over a month ago because my commute is about 15 feet nowadays.

I am very, very thankful that although, yes, the industry has changed and not for the better since I got in (gasp) 37-1/2 years ago (well, except that we are now using computers and not typewriters, and we now have the internet instead of an outdated Dorland's and PDR), at this moment at least I still have a skill that earns a paycheck, albeit not as good a one as it used to, and I still have a job.

And I am thankful that I can still create a run-on sentence with the best of 'em. :)

I am mighty glad to be working at home. Sitting here today with my cup of coffee, in my sweats and funky slipper socks, watching neighbors scraping their cars off. Yup, love the commute to work too;-)

I agree! I am a pajama as well . . . - SoCal MT

and darned proud of it! Even though things have and are changing, I love working from home. I love learning something new almost every day, and my dictators, for the most part, appreciate me. You have me beat on the 15 feet. My office is at least 20 feet from my bedroom. Oh, the nasty commute. ;)

well another thing that kinda fits to your post - mt55

Company that I work for, takes overflow from a large hospital service on the East coast. I have been there since August and have never run out of work.

However, today, I got a very PLEASANT surprise when I received an email from the hospital supervisor to my supervisor, stating that I was a GREAT transcriptionist. I enjoy working for a small enough service where the hospital cares enough to compliment even the "service transcriptionists."

I started transcribing 32 years ago and things have certainly changed. Some things for the good, some not so good. I am thankful I have a great BOB and have been with it for a long time. I am thankful that I have gotten very familiar with the docs, very few ESL and the ones we have a very easy to understand. I am not too happy with my paycheck, but I asm thankful that I get one on time every 2 weeks. The pay scale for VR is shameful, however, and I do get quite a bit of VR. Over the years I have seen real change. Who knows where we are going? I keep thinking and hearing India. Like I posted before, we should we be any different? Think of the millions of great Americsn jobs that have gone before us? I feel for you younger MTs that really love what you do. I am not sure where this profession is going to take us ultimately. But for right now, taking all the negative, I still love to transcribe and have never done anything else. Even when I got my RN, I knew that I was going to stick with MT. I feel you either love ir or our hate it, and if you love it, I really feel for you.

I have been in this business now for 36 years and finally this year reached my full retirement age. People, it takes no time to get there, believe me when I say this. I now work part, draw full social security and a retirement check from my last hospital job I worked at and finally my salary is like it was in the 80s. Talk about POSITIVE!! I hope to continue on working like this. I probably have further to go to my work place than others on here, mine is a good 25 feet from the bedroom to my office. I am still transcribing for the place where I now have 19 years in, first inhouse and now through a company. I really like working from home after being out in the work force for so long. Happy New Year, everyone.

Me, too. And here's a few more - things to be grateful for .. sm

We are not working in factories. I just couldn't do it.

Regardless of whether we like what is happening right now, people are without jobs and we have jobs being advertised and filled every day.

Especially not a sausage factory! :) SM - MissIndigo

My husband turned on a TV documentary last night about a sausage factory. Looking up from my book to see those people get suited up and sprayed down, then go to their positions to stand slicing at wet body parts on a conveyor belt all day made me want to go kiss my computer.

What I'm grateful for... (sm) - Mushroom

besides the short commute, a steady (if decreasing)paycheck, etc. that have already been mentioned -- I am so grateful to all the doctors over the years that speak clearly (at least most of the time) and have taught me so much, which has made it possible to deal with the really difficult ESLs (and difficult EFLs, too!). Even more, I'm grateful that I'll be able to retire in just a little more than a year, although I hope to keep working at least part-time beyond that. I'm hopeful that somehow MTs will be in a better situation in the coming decade, although right now it's a little hard to see how that is going to happen... Happy New Year, everyone!

Thankful I can still make a nice middle-class income in PJs SM - MissIndigo

even though I do have to work harder for it these days.

That it's a 0-stress job. No difficult clients to keep happy, no responsibility for risky decisions, no working through the night to finish a project, all unmannered "coworkers" safely unmet.

That it's my choice whether I gross a low-middle-class paycheck, middle-middle, or even upper-middle by adjusting the amount I wnat to work.

That I can run get a friend whose car's broken down without apologizing to anyone. I'm not sure I'd even be able to carry off that humble little head tilt/smile thing expected of workers at this level; my kids have grown up since the last time I needed it.

That I can live out in the country and burn most of my gas going off to play with my grandchildren or friends.

I'm not one of those who genuinely love transcription/editing itself. I preferred researching, writing, and signing my own reports, but the tradeoffs are still so worth it to this satisfied Pajama.

Here's what I'm grateful for...sm - mt4over20yrs

[ In Reply To ..]
First, I'm very grateful for this board. I mostly just take short breaks from work and read a few posts. It really helps me get through my day.

I'm grateful that when gas prices go up, it really doesn't affect me much.

I'm grateful for the smaller company I work for now. Although they offer no benes, there has been plenty of work for me. I've worked for the bigger companies with all the bells and whistles (downtime pay, overtime pay, sick pay, 401K) but none of it helped me pay the bills as I was confined to a strict schedule on accounts that were overstaffed.

The few times I had to drive through heavy traffic, I'm reminded how lucky I am to work from home.

Happy New Year to All!

Me, too. - gizmocat

Me, too. I'm so thankful that I still have a job, still have a roof over my head and a little food to feed my kids. Hopefully, things will get better. Happy New Year you guys.

Grateful For It - Heather

- I'm grateful for a good job.
- This year, there were times when I had to buy PB&J, a few loaves of bread, and a couple of hamburger rolls for groceries to feed a family of five. In the past 2 months after finally getting on with a great hospital, we're doing better. I shopped with a thankful heart amidst the crowds and cold weather yesterday, genuinely thankful I could put better and more food on the table for my kids.
- We had a tree, decorations, and presents this year. Last year, we had none of that, and you better believe we're thankful this year that things have improved.
- I used to be thankful that I could sit at home and work and not have to go out, but with the lack of consistency of work volume with the company I was working at (and a couple of others the past 12 years), I am pretty darn thankful that I finally am able to work at a good, local hospital now. I feel extremely blessed to not have to worry about running out of work this Christmas/New Year's like every other year I've ever worked.
- I'm thankful that, even though I'm overweight, I'm still pretty, and if I lost all this weight, my face would look much older. Heh. :D
- I'm thankful for God, for His blessings on my life. Thankful that, through all the hard times, He's finally bringing us out, and it's made us more grateful for the good times.
- I'm thankful that I was able to see how wonderful my children are becoming because they're not being spoiled to death, and they're learning to appreciate what they've got. If I hadn't gotten to see that, I'd have spoiled them rotten. And they'd be rotten. ;)
- I'm thankful that my ex-husband deserted me when he did with these kids because I would have never found the amazing, loving, patient husband I have now. And he's really handsome, too. He deserves the best, and I'm going to pretend like I'm the best for as long as he'll have me.
- I'm thankful for all the folks who said I would never make it when my life looked like it would fall apart. I'd rather believe that God helped me make it to this point anyway rather than giving credit to someone else.
- I'm thankful for 2010. Who knows what's going to happen, but my life's revolved around the theme of new beginnings, so here we go. I just bet this year's going to be better than the last.

Thank you, Pollyanna & everyone else... - HatesLosers

who contributed to this upbeat post!! It was fantastic to come here and finally see that I am not alone, that there are others who love the biz as much as I do, and who are actually grateful to be working at all, let alone from home!! You've made my day, girlfriends, and I thank you all for it!!!

By the way, I'm grateful for my FT job and all the little side jobs I'm able to pick up along the way because they allow me to work at home and be here for the one I'm most grateful for in my life...my wonderful 9 yo son!!!

Thank you, ladies, for your rays of sunshine today - may the New Year bring nothing but good, happy things for you and yours, and may you be healthy and middle-class (LOL, wealthy was a bit of a stretch, huh?) LOL - enjoy, and careful on the commute!!
