Cable/ DSL only requirement - Preturbed

Posted: Jul 10, 2011

It is very annoying to see so many companies with a DSL or cable only requirement to apply for a position with them.

I use a fixed wireless connection with Doc-Q-Scribe and with ChartNet with absolutely no problems at alll.  In fact, I am consistently one of the top...or THE top producer of lines every month and I am up against MTs who mostly have cable and DSL.

That cable and DSL only policy is keeping some excellent MTs from applying for positions.  Many of these companies are still operating on hopelessly outdated information.

This just really frosts me and I just needed to get it off my chest.   There are a lot of great MTs out there, employers.  A cable connection does NOT a good employee make.

The issue may be more HIPAA related. - Wireless has its security problems. nm

You do realize people can use wireless with cable/DSL, right? sm - MT

I recruited for a large national, and the issue mentioned was their track record with unstable satellite connections. It was easier for them to make a policy of only hiring people who used cable/DSL. HIPAA was not the reason they avoided satellite.

I believe it's in the way the signal transmits - sm

With cable and DSL, the signal sends in sort of a continuous wave. With satellite and I believe the wireless, I think you get more of a pulsing type transmission where it sends a batch, stops, sends another batch, as it bounces and beams off the satellite/tower. While I have used many many programs that it has been just fine with, there has been only one that was so slow as to be almost impossible.

They do know what wireless is, SM, and the - concern IS security and HIPAA compliance. SM

I have no idea just what's involved, but wireless can be set up for compliance, but then you'd still have to convince prospective employers with piles of other resumes that yours is HIPAA-compliant. Maybe sign up for cable or DSL until this all moves along further, as it will no doubt, and you can go back to wireless?

I'm HIPAA-compliant - Preturbed

[ In Reply To ..]
My employer made certain I was HIPAA-compliant. Fixed wireless isn't the same as the Wi-Fi you get in your local Starbucks or the like, which is NOT HIPAA-compliant.

I have been told by employers it is more to do with speed issues, which, as I said in my original post, is not an issue, at least with ChartNet and Doc-Q-Scribe; I honestly couldn't judge the other platforms.

No cable/DSL where I live - Preturbed

Unfortunately, there are no alternatives to wireless except satellite, which at least in my experience, was a complete nightmare, although others can work just fine with it. I could also use an air card, but there are companies who won't allow that, either, and an air card is slower than my wireless connection.

I live in a rural area, with no chance of cable or DSL, according to my local companies.

As it is, I am paying 80 bucks a month for my internet connection. Meanwhile, I'm watching internet trends like a hawk. It is greatly improved from 10 years ago, when dial-up was my only option.
I am in the same boat as you, very rural - sm - Zorro

no cable, no DSL. Verizon says it is too expensive to make the whole county DSL, right now just main intersection of the county and the 1 mile radius around it has DSL. Otherwise it is aircard or satellite (which I cannot have as we have too many trees). My current IC position I started with dial-up, so slow, then aircards became available, I jumped on it. Works great, though the tech people for the platform I work on said it would not work, uh, yes it does, quit well in fact. No one can feed off my signal, well I suppose some one could but they would have to be awfully close to my house and know how to hack it. My signal is not even recognized my my daughter's or husband's laptops in the house, just does not show up in their "available" wireless signal window. So I figure if I do ever leave to another position I will just say I have DSL (if high speed is necessary), though the aircard is not as fast it is still a ton faster than dialup. A friend of mine here(about 1/4 mile from me) recently dropped her aircard and went to satellite (less trees so she can do it), so far she is very happy with it and able to work fine (works for same MTSO as I do). I think it is very shortsighted of Verizon to not install what is necessary for DSL throughout the county, a lot of people would sign up for it and they would make back their money in less than a year probably. Just gonna keep on hoping but in the meantime my aircard gets me by just fine at $60 a month (5 gig a month, use about 4gig). You could call and renegotiate you monthly fee, that is what I did when I was paying $82 a month and was locked into a 2-year contract, they still allowed me to lower my cost despite the fact I had the contract (AT&T).

The word wireless isn't synonymous with non-cable/DSL. sm - MT

Cable/DSL can be set up wirelessly; I'm posting this right now using a wireless cable connection.

Having been a recruiter for a large national, I know the issue was tech had problems with unstable satellite connections, so it was easier for them to just say "cable/DSL required" than allow for exceptions for someone who said they had a really stable satellite connection. HIPAA was never the issue. ANYTHING over the Internet has a certain percentage of insecurity. Cable/DSL/satellite can all have security features. Nothing is impermeable, however.

HIPAA compliant - satellitemt

[ In Reply To ..]
This deal with internet being HIPAA compliant is simply incorrect. I know because I have had to work on satellite and then cable and am now using broadband. I investigated it thoroughly, and companies have a harder time relying on satellite because it takes more "bings" to travel, thus causing the loss of connection to be greater. Satellite, just like other internet connections, is HIPAA compliant. Otherwise, how would some companies allow for satellite?? Satellite nowadays, though, is far more sophisticated and reliable than even 5 years ago.

As far as wireless, one still has to have an internet provider, so I'm not sure what the question is there.
It's that, supposedly, cable and DSL are more stable, especially in certain weather conditions.

So tell them you have Cable/DSL - DickDonatosBeerGut

If what you have works with no problems, then they won't know the difference.

Tell them you have what they want.

ASR Lph Requirement

I'm going to start ASR shortly and am wondernig about line counts.  I'm required to do 150 lph of straight transcription.  My CCM keeps saying not to worry about lines and that I'll be able to easily do 300 lph or more with ASR.  Does this mean I now will have two different line counts to meet.  Will I be required to do 300 lph for ASR and 150 lph for straight reports?  I'm confused on this.   Thanks   ...

Accuracy Requirement
Mar 09, 2013

Very shortly our accuracy requirement will be 99.6%.  Since this company cares nothing about accuracy, my conclusion is two-fold:  1) As they always have, they are going to use this as a marketing tool.  2) Anyone who falls below 99.6% will have their pay docked thus reducing the company's labor costs even further and will probably result in administrative bonuses.  For new employees - welcome to MM.  For everyone else - get out if you can.  ...
