So you pay for it.. then a month or two later they tell you they have no more work.. it was great. Now i have all these telemarketers calling, who get your number, when you get a license, from the chamber of commerce but have no work. Whatever ...
I did at ScribeRight too - and agree with other poster - It was a waste-

It is because of the rules/regs for being/hiring an independent contractor. Tax purposes, I think, not sure. It was no big deal. It cost $10 and was good for I think 7 years in my county. Had to make up a letterhead, but that was easy, also. Small price to pay to have a job.

Becoming LLC -- long message - A new businesswoman
[ In Reply To ..]
I just started working as an IC for the 1st time. I talked to my accountant and she very strongly encouraged me to become a business to protect myself, my personal assets, and my joint assets with my husband. She said she has seen so many frivolous lawsuits, and if I make a mistake in a report I could be sued. She said even if I did nothing wrong, lawyer fees could be huge to defend myself if someone sues me. Being a business protects me from that -- if I get sued, I can dissolve the business and they won't have anyone to go after. It only took 1 day to get the LLC registered. Next I applied for a city license. It seems worth it to me, but the company I am now transcribing for felt it was totally unnecessary. I guess it is an individual decision, but the accountant said if I'm filling out a Schedule C on income tax, that means I AM a business and I should do it correctly.
sounds like your accountant - is seeking job security

I would like to hear your accoutant's reasoning on you being sued when you are subcontracting for a larger company. That larger company holds the contract with the medical facility and thus, THEY would be responsible for any work that was done incorrectly, even though YOU may have typed it.
Also, I have been doing taxes since 2004 and I have NEVER in any of my classes been told that you have to be a business in order to do a schedule C correctly.
I think your accoutant is preying on your lack of knowledge. If you want a business license for your own sanity, by all means, but it is NOT necessary in order to file taxes correctly.

is not "preying" upon anyone. He or she is doing what a good accountant is supposed to do--protect the client and her assets.

I think your accountant is right on. We live in a very litigious society, made more so by the economic times. I owned my own business for 40 years and was never sued, but I took proper legal precautions to protect my assets. I think your account is wise. Too many of these folks who work at home know nothing about business and do not do business in a businesslike way. Then when trouble comes they have no idea what to so. Sounds like you are proceeding in the right, businesslike fashion. And, BTW, having a good CPA can save you thousands of dollars in taxes. I still do some consulting and yes, I still use the services of my CPA. Good luck to you in your business. I hope it is a huge success!
Thanks so much for the support! - New businesswoman

I really appreciate your words of encouragement. It is not expensive to get set up this way, at least where I live, and I feel better knowing that I am doing things as a business. It is exciting at this stage of my life, too! I think some of the problems with the low pay for MTs is that we are not considered professional, and it is worth it to me to do this. Thanks again for your kind reply.

You're welcome! You sound like the kind of person who SHOULD go into our profession--professional, organized, and businesslike! You are willing to actually do business in a professional way--refreshing! Please let us know how you are doing. I'm betting on your success.
Under what circumstances would MTs need business licenses? Are they only needed if the MT is running a home office? Working for people in the same state?

If I offer my services as an IC to a company do I need a business license....I dont have others working under me, just tryin' to get the job as an IC. I just noticed in their agreement that I am agreeing that I have a business license b/c I am "offering services to the public". Thanks. ...
I was informed that I need a business license to work for a company as an IC. My city, county, and state do not require a home-based business that files a schedule C with their tax return to have a license if they do not sell items to the general public and the only employees are family members. Can they cancel my contract for not having a license? ...
Has anyone working as an IC been required to obtain a business license or become an LLC to continue IC status? The company I IC with has been acquired by a new mgt company and they are requiring all IC to do this. ...
Good morning - I'm currently working in a small hospital in WI but looking at doing some work as an IC for the first time. After much googling, emails that are getting me nowhere and phone calls with endless strings of menus to choose from and no real people to speak with, I am at my wit's end with trying to figure out if a business license is required in the state of Wisconsin in order to work as an independent contractor. If it is required, do you know how to go about obt ...
The company I work for is requiring the IC's to get a business license through our city we live in. However, I live in a very rural area, not a city, so I have no idea how to obtain this license? I contacted my county and they were clueless. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't want to lose my job! ...
I have been offered a position as an IC for a company who posted on this website. I was told by them that I needed to obtain a Business License through my State/County in order to work for them. Has anyone had to do this? Is this common practice now for ICs? If anyone has any information on how to do this and if I should do this, please let me know. Thank you so much! ...
A company that I applied for is requiring that I have myself and/or my company licensed in my municipality as a businessowner before they hire me to work for them as an IC. I am wondering how do you go about doing this and is this now becoming the "new norm" for working as an IC? This is the first I have ever heard of such other than having to get an employee identification number through the IRS, which I have already done so. I contacted my township supervisor and he said he knew nothing ...
what are you all doing when there is no work during whatever your shift may have been? Are you having to make up the hours elsewhere? (That could lead to potentially a lot of bouncing around the shifts trying to find work.) ...
We should really push for professional licensure for this job like RNs, Rad Techs, RTs, RD, and CNAs. Hospital and clinics require these people to be licensed… then why not us? May this will stop shipping work abroad. ...
Hello again, everyone.
Thank you SM for giving me some information on ScribeRight. I am new at this type of position, and there is no guarantee they will call me or even want me, but if they do get in touch, does anyone here know how much an IC license will cost in Ohio and what the cost might be for a certificate for HIPAA ?? I searched several sites and I am not sure what I should be pricing. Thanks everyone. ...
Apparently starting in March, we will have to start paying for our own shorthand program. Does anyone have any idea what this would cost, and do you know if we have to renew it each year? At the rate I'm losing work, I'm afraid it will cost me one whole paycheck. ...
Just wondering how we are supposed to be able to afford a new shorthand license on the type of pay we have. I noticed that it is up in 17 days. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is having a problem with this. Just wanted to gripe. ...
From my sup: "I just received word that Shorthand licenses will not be renewed at the next expiration. Most of you use the expanders in Fluency, so are not affected. I believe there are still a few of you who use Shorthand still, you may want to use this advance notice to transition over to the word expander in Fluency."
This so upsets me!

I am currently an Exact-Med student. They give each student Speedtype. I had been using it, but my husband updated our Soundcard and then it said that my license for Speedtype was no longer valid. So I had to purchased a new llicense for a "new computer" since by updating the sound card it changed settings on our hard disk. Then we went on vacation and turned our computer off for 2 weeks and when I restarted it, it says my license is not good anymore....don't know why, but apparentl ...
1. I s/w an MTSO today for a potential job. They told me that they are going to be switching platforms and that the new software comes with a 30-day free license but after that, they ask that all MTs pay a $250 license fee. She said it was refundable after employment ended so long as I sign off that I will not use the software anywhere else. This sounds kinda fishy to me, since it seems that this expense should be something paid for by the company.

My PC Shorthand license expires 4/5, which is today. I took that to mean I could renew today for my yearly license. I was wrong. Logged on to work today and see that PC Shorthand is expired. Desperately trying to get hold of tech support at PC Shorthand. In the meantime, anyone who uses PC Shorthand, can you answer my question? If I go ahead and order a "new" license (instead of waiting on tech support to renew my old license), will I lose all of my expanders ...
I have an offer to apply. I noted they charge a monthly fee for their license free. I have lots of acute-care experience and I have never paid for anything like that. A little hesitant about that though. Any information would be greatly appreciated. At the present time, I really need a job. Thanks ...
I'm going to start ASR shortly and am wondernig about line counts. I'm required to do 150 lph of straight transcription. My CCM keeps saying not to worry about lines and that I'll be able to easily do 300 lph or more with ASR. Does this mean I now will have two different line counts to meet. Will I be required to do 300 lph for ASR and 150 lph for straight reports? I'm confused on this. Thanks ...
Can somebody explain this to me? I know you can work up to 40 hrs weekly, but what is the required line count? I'm wanting to go to PT so I can get another PT job somewhere else, as the NJA drives my nuts. I'm currently required to get 100 lph at FTLB. Is this also my requirement if I go PT? CCM has been MIA, so I'm not getting any help there and having a hard time finding exactly what I'm looking for on Central. Thanks ...
I started to apply for a job at Medquist, but saw right off the bat they required my Social Security number to be given. I feel uncomfortable giving out my number before I even fill out an application or take a test. It didn't appear to me to be a secure site, and I don't like that floating around in cyberspace. I wrote them back and asked if I could give my SS# after I took a test, but have received no reply. I've put in several applic ...
It is very annoying to see so many companies with a DSL or cable only requirement to apply for a position with them.
I use a fixed wireless connection with Doc-Q-Scribe and with ChartNet with absolutely no problems at alll. In fact, I am consistently one of the top...or THE top producer of lines every month and I am up against MTs who mostly have cable and DSL.
That cable and DSL only policy is keeping some excellent MTs from applying for positions. Many of these compan ...
