Acute Care? - Meh

Posted: Sep 23, 2014

As a relative newbie MT, I'm not certain what "acute care" means. Does it mean basically all reports that are from doctors in the hospital setting? That is, would any hospital operative note, hospital progress note, and all discharge summaries be considered "acute care"? I know a clinic note is basically a note by an outpatient doctor, right? And it's basically about more minor medical problems albeit could be chronic rather than "acute."

The medical meaning of acute is not "real bad." Look it up so you can see what its meanings are. Chronic does not mean minor, either.

When you have the flu or a cold, that is an acute illness. Not "real bad," but just short term. Hypertension is a chronic illness. Goes on and on.

The meanings are not exactly the same for types of care.

Acute care is, basically, inpatient hospital care. Any of the reports are acute care.

Clinic notes are ambulatory or outpatient care. The conditions are not necessarily minor or chronic -- they are just not being treated with the patient as an inpatient in a hospital. ED is outpatient, as is ambulatory surgery.

Long-term care is nursing home, etc.

Your explanation is quite clear. However, I want to point out that I didn't mean that a chronic illness is more mild than an acute illness, only that a chronic illness is long-term whereas I think an acute illness is something that's usually a flare-up or trauma, making it short-term. Therefore, in that way, acute illness would be more serious than a chronic illness if that chronic illness suddenly flares up.

You are more correct than "sm" - NM

Acute does NOT mean "not real bad" - !!

[ In Reply To ..]
It means active or short-term has opposed to chronic or long-term. It is a measure of time/onset. An acute illness can be sudden, severe, and disabling.

For example, a patient can have an acute myocardial infarction. It absolutely does not mean 'not real bad'.

Why would you need to misquote her like that? - Wondering

You changed the location of the quotation marks to make it sound like she said something she didn't. Why?

She said that it did not necessarily mean "real bad," and that is correct.

An acute MI can be bad or minimal. The word acute refers to time. In the layperson's understanding, it means severe, but the technical meaning from ICD-9 is within 8 weeks of onset.

In a nutshell...SM - Old Anon

History and physical, consultations, operative reports/procedures, and discharge summaries for patients in a hospital setting. I always considered ER as part of acute care, especially where it results in the patient being admitted.

All of Those - Meh

Since I do all of those worktypes, that means I have experience in acute care, even though I'm pretty new. Yet companies make it sound as if you need acute care is something more advanced in order to have experience in them, it seems to me.

Acute Care Question
Apr 29, 2013

I've been in transcription since 1998, doing clinic work for about 13 of those, then moving to acute care consisting of H&P, consults, and discharge summaries....but not op notes. I see so many jobs for acute care work, but they only want people who've done all four. My question is, how do you go about learning to do op notes in order to obtain one of those jobs?
